Pitcher's parks - Update!!! Topic

Naw. Bats are bats, some are defensive specialists, some can only run. They're going to be cheap. You're not going to get 15 guys that can mash it. As I said, they come in and out based on their specialty.

That's kind of the thing.   I've got two solid SS, GG candidates at 2B/3B, a 90/81 back-up CF and 78/80/83 C.   Bringing in a solid sub as a back-up COF/1B seems like defensive overkill.   That's why I don't mind carrying the 3rd C a LH bat off the bench.

You probably have a meathead 1B that can hit 40 and strikeout 200 in the minors. Bring him up.

Bingo. What would you rather have, 20 average IP, or 80 AB with 6 HR from him?

Since he's a 3rd year pro, I see no point in giving him 80 AB.   But I am scouring the FA scrap heap now for a cheap hitting option with an option.

Back in the 3 man tandem days, I'd carry 9-10 pitchers.   But I'd have 3 position players that finished the season with less than 100 AB.    That's why I think 13 PP is plenty.
+1.  Plus in the rare 20 inning game your bats can go the whole way.  Pitching is not an inextinguishable resource.

Believe what you want to believe, I'll just continue throwing up 3.40ish team ERAs season after season with a 10 man staff.

If I ever figure out how not to score 3.10 runs per game, I'll let you know.

I'm not saying you don't know how to manage a pitching staff in a pitcher's park.  I even sent you a goddam sitemail about it.   However, I don't need 15 hitters.

All I'm saying is, and really it's not a huge deal, where would you rather have the 25th man; as a 20 inning pitcher, or as a 80 AB hitter? Because that's your decision.

I need the 80 AB hitter, because I don't know what the hell I'm doing offensively.

Cesar Crespo is what 76/46 will do for you in a pitcher's park.

And he'll be available 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 4 days, unlike a 30/whatever.

Do it!!!
I have a similar reliever, how do you set his pitch counts to maximize his innings?
1/6/2012 5:38 PM

I'd rather have the 20 inning pitcher because he can probably throw 60 or more and I won't be scrambling if I have a 7 day injury to a guy or a rash of extra inning games.

As an info FYI, I'm over .500 in extra inning games in Coop and MG totalled up when those teams are under .500 over the almost 6 seasons. I actually do better if it goes longer because my 200 inning reliever is probably still out there, and I'm into the 3rd/4th/5th choice on the other team.

Food for thought.

This is the winner right here.  I like to err on the side of pitchers in case my starter goes down to injury in the first inning or we play an 18-inning affair or something.  That won't bother my PP.  It will bother my staff sometimes, and no sense in either of those causing an unnecessary losing streak.

Cooperstown, 1474.1 IP (second most), 10 man staff, 3.31 ERA (4th in league), never struggled for fatigue.

You need to have the right pitchers, yes, but you would need 2 straight early starting pitcher injuries to blow it out.
