calling up a guy before he is even 40 man eligible is not tanking

My thinking is this: if he is an improvement over your current players and he has enough durability to play every day, why keep him in the minors?

That's my thinking, as well. I always want to win more games vs. the alternative. I routinely keep top-quality players in the minors for 20 games to slow their arbitration/free agency clock, but it drives me crazy when owners leave stud players in the minors to squeeze an extra point or two of (possible) development out of them. I'd rather have the extra win or two than those points.
I don't know where people get the idea that players stop developing if they are promoted to the majors.  As long as they are getting regular playing time, their development really should improve, as long as your major league coaches are better than your minor league ones (as they are 99% of the time).

And it drives me crazy that people think everyone should do things the way they want them to.

Duffy would probably be the best hitter in the ml right now.. I left him in the minors because with the sp that I have he would make a 65 win team a 75 win team and I'm probably a season away at least from competing. I hate losing but I dont see the value in wasting his cheap seasons on a definite non-playoff team.. I still think I'm kind of tanking it by just sitting back and accepting a sh*tty record

That probably is the definition of "soft tanking".  But as long as you make your MWRs, there is no issue.

If you feel like you're tanking, you probably are.

It's just my personal preference that everyone plays their best hand.

Which is cool because you are not saying everyone should do it your way. I tend to do it different ways and base it on individual situations. Sometimes I keep guys in the minors a minimum of 4 seasons no matter what and other times I call them up early.

Unless you have a team capable of getting to the playoffs with a shot at winning then HBD rewards losing. Until there's a real penalty built into the game itself (lower budget perhaps) then be conservative. You don't have to try and lose, but there's no reason to hurt your chances down the road and bring players up early. Maybe if WIS ever figures out how to get that "Like" button functionality down they'll start working on making the game better.
