I generally agree that the closer designation is a waste, but I have one anyway.  I have D'Angelo Lopez set to come in in the 8th inning, and I use him in non save situations.  As you can see, he gets 80-100 IP per season, meaning I'm leaving about 50-70 IP on the table per season.  But, I want him to make the HoF someday, and setup guys don't make it.  The save statistic and fireman of the year awards will help that happen.  It's kind of silly, but I have a strong bullpen besides Lopez, so I can afford it.

Dumbest post ever.

You're intentionally underutilizing an extremely valuable player in order to let him accumulate meaningless (in the big picture) statistics and awards with the goal of having him be elected to a flawed Hall of Fame.

I don't get it.

Strangely enough that happens in real life too.  The closer is the only position in MLB where a position is utilized almost entirely based on a meaningless stat.

(Note:  I do realize that there is now a "role mentality" that exists in MLB that didn't used to, so it's not all that cut and dried....but it should be).

Here's a guy whose HOF career I'm jeopardizing:  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Tyreace James

55 gb and one big league pitch with that kind of success in Tucson?  Wow.

He's got a great defense behind him (as do all of my pitchers).  That helps skew the ballpark effects.  Then again, I only moved there this past season so things could very well "normalize".  Even so, his success will be relative to who he's pitching against that game.  Not just the overall numbers.  The other team has to pitch there too.

If I am going to have a closer, I target guys like Benito Martin or James Wieters.  They are great one inning closers and you don't feel like you are wasting them.  Of course, I always have one or more of those awesome, multi-inning RPs to set them up in the 7th and 8th innings.

Uh, the guy going "calm down" quickly rips off 4 posts without a response explaining what he does and how great his world is because they vote for the HOF.

Who's excited?
Sorry, I'll try to keep in mind that the forum language police are watching my every move.  I promise to do better in the future.

Just saying you seemed pretty excited when someone called your "strategy" dumb.
1/31/2012 12:06 PM
I acknowledged that it wasn't a good strategy in the first sentence of the post.  I don't see why the guy has to call me dumb for it.  That's just being mean.

I didn't say you were dumb.  I said your post, i.e. your strategy, was dumb.

Did I strike a nerve?

Silly me, I thought that it takes a dumb person to write a dumb post.  My thinking on this subject goes thusly:  People play the game for different reasons.  Perhaps I get my jollies by having a core group of players together on a team for as long as possible, and trying to get as many of those guys into the HoF as possible.  If I wanted to run my team the best way possible, Lopez wouldn't be a closer, and I would have to trade Fernando Rios right now for some minor league studs.  But I won't, because of sentimental reasons.  I might be sacrificing a few wins per season, but I'm enjoying myself.  Why does that have to be berated?

As I said before, I acknowledged that it's not a good strategy.  It's actually an anti-strategy.  But until they start recording "holds" as a stat, for this team, I'll use Lopez as a closer, because I want him in the Hall, flawed or not.

I would love to see owner voting on Fireman.  Guys like Rey Iwazaki (and the aforementioned Lopez) don't get credit for their IP, and lose Fireman awards to guys with 5 more Saves, but 65 fewer IP and a higher ERA.  This does indeed ipact how these players look in HoF voting.  Certainly not a major thing, but something I'd like to see.

Good point, but the fireman award is decided by a statistical metric, just like real life.  The awards that get voted for in RL get voted for in HBD, and so it goes with the stat based ones.   A question:  do gold gloves and silver sluggers get awarded strictly based on stats in RL?

Pretty certain Gold Gloves do not, or Derek Jeter wouldn't have any.

You guys kind of got worked up, but I'm curious to know how stamina and durability ratings work together to determine how many innings a relief guy can pitch.
1/31/2012 12:58 PM
The higher the better!
1/31/2012 1:02 PM
I know but how do you guys know how many innings are being left on the table by using a closer?
