No..we are just having one draft.
But there are 2 ways to do it, "
on the clock" and "
off the clock"
I have sent you a site mail with an attempt to explain the differences, but rest assured there is just one draft.
Right now, we are "off the clock". That means you can't pick until everyone in front of you has picked.
The advantage is no one is skipped, and I think that this is a good feature in early rounds, as that is when
the most desireable players are being snapped up.
The disadvantage is that drafting "off the clock" can take longer than drafting "on the clock".
When we are "on the clock" , each owner will be assigned a time slot. When your slot comes up,
you can make your choice, even if those in front of you haven't picked. (You
can make your pick before
your assigned slot if
all the other owners ahead of you have made their selection.)
The advantage of this method is that rounds are completed on-schedule, and the draft keeps moving.
The disadvantage is, as suggested above, that owners can be skipped over if they
are away from a computer or smart phone.
So there is no perfect method, but we will do our best to balance the need for promptness
with the need to get owners some of the premier players in the early rounds.
Every WIS draft I have particpated in has used both methods over the duration of the draft.
The general default setting for most WIS hockey drafts is:
Off the clock for the first round or 2 (lots of good players to be gotten, getting skipped here blows monkey chunks)
On the clock for middle and later rounds, during the business week (Monday to Friday)
Off the clock for all rounds during statutory holidays and weekends.
One other drafting tool at our disposal is the PROXY PICK.
With a proxy pick, you send a few choices, in priority order, to a few owners below you in the draft.
There are a lot of really good people here who will help you by jumping on the computer during y
our slot and making your pick for you.
(Often, someone will volunteer to take the proxies if they are going to be on a computer all night.)
Another option for a Proxy Pick is to give a general direction, instead of a list of players. Such a direction might be:
-"defenceman with the highest D rating"
-"goalie with the highest games-played percentage"
-"foward with the highest salary"
-"forward with the most goals"
Proxy Picks really help out on the weekends, when we are Off The Clock.
It is great when those who will be away can leave some proxies, as
it helps the draft keep moving.
When we are off the clock, one person being away will hold up the whole draft, as no one can be skipped.
Proxies solve this problem.
If anybody has any questions, please post them. This league has a lot of really experienced, successful,
helpful owners who will be a great resource to a newer owner.
