I'm  surprised you're torn, dave. If I were writing the movie script, it'd read like "Hoosiers". On the one hand, you have  metropolitan, scandal-ridden UConn, whose coach played 12 years in the NBA.  On the other, you have agricultural/mining  Kentucky,  #8 seed, injured center, winner of 4 straight cardiac-inducing upsets. Their coach played 2 years at  tiny Clarion

And look at the similarities between Kentucky and 1985 Villanova, the only #8 seed to win the NT.  Both teams had 10 losses , defeated Michigan, and have Italian-American coaches. And where did Villanova win their title?? In Rupp Arena

It's dumb, the 4 teams that are listed are the FIRST FOUR teams to miss out on the NT...whatever numbers they are on the Projy report...they're the FIRST FOUR to miss, they aren't the last anything, and you can't have a next after a last, it just doesn't make sense.
One more try re: last four out.

Virginia Union went 0-27.  The committee crossed them off the list IMMEDIATELY.  They were the FIRST ONE OUT.

They continued crossing teams off the list.  In the end, they were down to 2 teams for that 64th spot in the NT.  It was going to be either West Georgia or Bowie State University in that spot.  They argued about it for hours.  Finally, after much horse-trading and alcohol consumption, they put West Georgia into the tournament.  Bowie State University was the LAST ONE OUT.

What imaginary world are you talking about where Virginia union goes 0-27 and Bowie state and west Georgia are in the same Division. You sir have lost all credibility!

Oh wait, maybe I should have actually read your post....yep, everything else makes perfect sense. Well done!

How would you refer to the next-to-last anything?  Google "next to the last" and you'll see 450,000,000 results that beg to differ.

In order to keep with the logic of LAST FOUR OUT, I have to say that NEXT FOUR OUT would be incorrect at worst, clumsy at best.  If you eat the last apple (NT bid) I can't eat the next one until we get more of them (next season).

I get that you can say next-to-last, but you have to twist and squirm to get there.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have two groups of four, anyway, does it?  Seems arbitrary.

with 4 one seeds, 4 two seeds, etc... it doesn't seem so arbitrary to me :)

Okay, okay, "arbitrary" is not the right word.  After deciding you're going to display eight, I don't see much value in dividing it up.  I get why, if you're going to do that, you'd choose four for your group size.
