You can always experiment to see their reactions to the redshirt and then restore eligibility afterwards. If you promised him minutes, he will be irate but it's always fun to read the messages.
Yeah i did this with a few of my recruits. The only player who was fine with it was the one I didn't promise minutes to, and he is a JUCO transfer and my best recruit.
