This is how I built my 2-3 zone, I only play 2-3... Not going to go 3-2 anytime soon. I lack offense, basically because I changed jobs and it's hell to get players good at every stats when you come in the second session. If you disregard my guards, my SF-PF-C rotation is what I call a solid 2-3 zone for D2 and I am going to win games with it once we get some seniors into the mix.

Very few people understand zone. I made mistakes early by taking advice on zone from users who don't play zone.
If I knew more about this game before I joined, I would have selected a press team because Zone is a complex D! I should be able to get a basic understanding to win a few CT and get NT appearances before moving up.

The presence of a BIG C in the lane with high BLK :), should lower FG%. There are so many recruits especially in the lower divisions who have amazing BLK and REB but pathetically low DEF ratings. I have decided to exclude them as potential recruits until I try to decipher the importance of BLK & DEF in that position.

In all honesty, it probably really depends on the rest of your team. If your teams defense as a whole sucks, then having a killer C in a 2-3 zone really is a moot point. On the contrary, if your teams defense is killer, then having a less than ideal C may not hurt as bad.

There are so many variables that its tough to really answer...hence the different answers already talked about in this thread.

Thanks for the reference Zorzi! Tall players with the makeup like Jeffrey Myers are exactly what I have been visualizing as an effective C, although I'd be very content with a C with a lot lower ATH and SPD at DIII.

Last season, in D3, I had two pathetically unathletic, slow C with sub-par D. However, both were 90+ in REB/BLK. I planned to use both at C but someone who DOES understand zone suggested C/PF in 3-2. I went 27-4 and was a 3 seed in the NT with only one legit scorer. I played + in game planning because they shut things down inside.

As a caveat, that was D3. 90+ in anything is going to produce pretty good results in D3.

I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of statistical data that suggests shot blocking is important in a 2-3 zone and how many shots are altered over the course of a game.

Altered shots don't show up in the pbp or box score. Based on dev chats and the uber long zone thread a year or so ago from Seble and Gillispie they all confirmed the importance of the SB rating.

When I first started playing I took a zone team and ran it for several seasons at D3. The deepest runs I had were when I had a C with 70+ ath and def and 90+ SB and Reb. Our defensive efficiency was so much better the two years that guy anchored our defense. I don't have the actual numbers anymore, but I'm definitely a believer in the importance of SB.

Explanation seems reasonable.. Based on what you're saying, since there is little difference in the number of blocked shots from man to man to zone, the number of altered shots would be fairly significant then? I wonder if they paired that up with NCAA averages? I just didn't think there would be more altered shots than blocked shots in any given game, but I suppose it's possible.
