What do you think of this type of guy at High D1? Topic

You guys have high expectations! At Rhode Island I’d take that guy all day as a backup. I know I’m getting a player that will stay 4 years, play good D, be athletic, and not hurt me off the bench. But I’m also recruiting in the A10 with a low baseline. Restocking when I lose early entries is harder so I try and mitigate it by having guys that can fill in during their 3rd and 4th season if I need them to.
In context of the “Abilities Doctrine” that I have discussed elsewhere, this is a guy who, once at his reasonable peak, does 2 things fairly well - perimeter defense and distributing. He’s solid in the “good” category for D1 in those two abilities. If I’m going to spend resources on a guy, I would like him to do 3 things well, or be excellent (think low 90s average for the corresponding attributes) in those two areas. So I’ll take this kind of guy every few years (not every year, I don’t want a team full of bench guards). But I’m not likely to spend resources to get him, unless I’m desperate.

If his starting perimeter was higher and his work ethic better, I think you could make the case that he’d be a 3-abilities player soon enough to bump him up.

He won’t play a meaningful minute his first two seasons. He’s a true project. By his JR. year he will be okay defensively and have passable guard skills (75+spd/by/pass). I am really hoping for him to be a backup guard for the NT his Jr. and his Sr. Year. It’s probably a lot to invest for such little value but I signed him.

Can you post a screenshot of his ratings and potentials?

Assuming he stays ineligible... He would really hurt you this year if he passes the SAT and you have to honor those minutes. I might just let him walk in that case, personally.

Too much green with that low WE, IMO, to be thinking about getting close to those projections in all the categories. Probably have to punt perimeter, and hope his BH potential is high enough, and you can get him enough court time to develop into a decent backup distributing point guard (70 Spd, 70 BH, 85 pass) as an upperclassman. Decent athleticism and defense, he won’t kill you by the end of his second developmental season.

1. He won't become eligible. I didn't sign him until late in the second period, there was no more windows left. That and his HS GPA is to low to likely become eligible.

2. EXCLUDING his ineligble year I am projecting his WE to go something like 18->20->22->25. I am reasonably confident I can get 6-8 points of growth each year out of PER/BH/PASS each until they low black or orange.

3. I signed him, time to see how this plays out.

Yeah I’m not trying to pick at or hector you about it. Just discussing how the extra info about the low WE and multiple areas of substantial potential change my eval calculus. He’ll be an interesting guy to watch, for sure.

Personally, I’ve had success getting low WE guys to 6-8 points per year when I can focus on 3 areas, and can totally punt quite a few. I’ll be interested to see if and how you can pull off 4+ (assuming you intend to get max growth in speed and defense as well) without extensive playing time all the way through.

I was on board with the all 80s dude at first but after looking at his starting numbers and the WE, I'm much less certain about him. I would probably pass.

So to get that WE growth, you're planning on starting him all 4 seasons? That's too much investment for me at high D1 personally. But I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Ahem, I am the foremost expert on low WE guys........

Seriously, I will start him 6-10 games a year during years 1-3, if possible, which it should be. I will get those #'s up, don't you worry. It is super nice to see you two agreeing though.

He'll get 8 minutes in DEF , until the BH/PASS turn black (probably year 2/3).

Twenty minutes in COND, BH, PASS. PER.

The real question is Do you think you are aware of what taking a Inel does. Most people thinks it allows to stay at the steady pace Just think it Multiples to 5 dice rolls in a single dice. It enable your team to make a full scale rebuild is what I did at Chowan I don't know if I am ever returning but you should see how the results went Positive.
