Thanks, gillespie-- those are really good points you make. I didn't think through it before, but what you said about the few extra points of work ethic makes a lot of sense-- since work ethic impacts its own improvement (at least up to a point), there's some degree of exponential growth at the smallest values. The depth requirement of a fullcourt press is another very good point. Fortunately this guy is decent enough with his base ratings (at least relative to my team) that I wouldn't feel *terrible* giving him 10-15 minutes off the bench, but it's definitely a bigger price to pay.
well, that's good he has good starting ratings - that helps a lot! i personally find those project types (whether low WE or not) are most tolerable when at least they are decent defenders. i can sort of wait on the rest, have the other 4 guys cover those other skills.

i also don't mean to be overly picky in my earlier post. in general, due to the high risk low to medium reward setup of low WE players, newer folks tend to recruit ones who should be passed over. but especially at a new program, its not necessary every player is great. solid to good can be fine. so the 9 WE guy might be fine - guess you'll find out - as long as you prioritize his cores and accept now he won't get the misc. stuff, he'll probably be at least decent for you. plus its a good experience getting one of these edge case guys to see how development works at that low WE.

I drag knuckles now! But I got some big ol hands. I'm just trying to shave them down.

Yes I likely wouldn't have recruited him if I was press. If agree. And it's correct that he wasn't my first choice. But I was intrigued by a couple things..... one, if you look at my (pathetic) history in Iba at NKU, for some reason I'm setup on this "every other year" schedule. Unintentional class structure plays a part. Roll losses play a part. But for whatever reason, I'm almost feeding into it. I've started lots of freshman along the way. But I've been BEYOND confident in my teams each of those seasons. (Title, skip, championship game, skip, F4, skip, this season I'm a 5 seed and I truly believe I can make the F4. And I've believed that all season). So while I've lost lots of regular season games in the gauntlet of D2 Iba, I've had the team well prepared for post season after the freshman come out of those promised starts.

My last F4 while he was a Soph, I wrestled with benching him, but I stayed the course and stuck with it. And we'll see if it pays off in about 3 days
you started him all NT too? now that i am a little surprised by. why?
I did not his freshman season. When he was a Soph, he had "Jr IQs" roughly because he was redshirted early on. And was my best defensive option at that position at that time. Something like..... 75 ATH, 79 SPD, 66 DEF I believe. He didn't participate much on the offensive end at that time. But could hold his own on the defensive end as I had no one else exciting to take his place.

And then his Jr season and this current Sr season, he's one of my better players on the roster regardless of his WE

I took a 4 WE guy at Wisconsin. I would probably do it again, but in retrospect, I may not have battled for him like I did. He was a top 10 by position guy out of HS, he was in my backyard, and wanted to stay close to home. The team that challenged me for him was Cincinnati, so I kind of battled for him out of principle. He was fine, and honestly his low WE basically guaranteed that he was a 4 year player, which was nice. The most frustrating thing was how slow his IQ grew. He was a decent enough student, but at 22 minutes study time, still only ended up at B+ to start his senior year. As gil said, it’s important that his defense starts sufficient for the level. For those low WE guys I also look at more than 2-3 greens as a negative. Punting greens drop fast.

My low work ethic story:

Had a team with about no speed and no young guards that could pass. Landed 2 5 stars at C+ to play the 3 and 5, as well as a stud inel defensive big to play the four. Sniped this guy from a sim, and he ended up starting in 3 Sweet 16 games.

This was before I got better at the game, so note I put like 15-17 minutes per year into developing his PER. Idiotic!

There's nothing wrong with signing a guy like that at Weber State tho. I'd sign him 10 times out of 10 at a low D1 school
