In MA it is. Keep in mind this is before taxes. In NYC or SF, it would not even be middle class. You are looking at it from the perspective of your trailer park home in Fla. That is not the case. The median price of a home in MA is north of $500k. Not to mention our RE taxes. Public transportation is OK but not great so most people need a car and families, two. Not sure why this puzzles you. If I were living in Durham, NC then $400k would be significant. That is not the case in eastern MA.

Bullshit. I have lived in both NY and the SF area and did not make anywhere close to $4000,000 a year. Based on the way my family lives, I'm pretty sure most people would consider us solidly middle class.
