Not to be a jerk or pedantic but just want to ensure my personal understanding as I prepare.

(1) Players from the four unused franchises are draft eligible but not subject to becoming FA's after 5 seasons, correct? Only players whose first season is 1970 become FA's at the conclusion of their fifth season?

(2) It looks like there was a significant trade involving an unused franchise (Washington) and California (one of the 20 used). All players involved belong to California unless not kept, correct?

(3) A player rostered to the team chosen in 1970 remains the property of that team throughout their career even though they go on to play for several more teams, correct? For example, Nolan Ryan belongs to the Met's franchise unless released or traded, correct?

(4) For the 1971 draft I decide to keep 25 players. I draft rounds 1-8 but must take 2 pitchers and 6 hitters should I so chose. Or, do I wait until all 20 managers have 25 rostered players and then everyone picks AAA?

(5) Split seasons cannot be used during 1970 but can going forward?

Anyone that can use the word pedantic properly in a sentence is alright by me.

1. Yes - players from the 4 unused franchises will be available in the draft along with the 1970 rookies. Only rookie players are subject to the free agency provision. Additionally, the initial draft pool and subsequent pools will include any player not kept by the 20 participating franchises.

2. Any player that played for more than one team in 1970 will enter the draft as an unsigned veteran. This status will be determined by what is displayed in the WIS database. Example - Catcher Jack Hiatt ( I'm sure everyone recalls this player ) is shown in the WIS database as player for multiple teams in 1970. He will enter the draft as an unsigned veteran.

3. Your understanding is correct.

4. You have the opportunity to fill your team to 33 players every draft cycle - 25 man roster plus 8 AAA. If you keep 25 and want to draft 8 AAA players you will draft in normal rotation with every other owner. Just like a real life franchise you may move players up or down from AAA so you should have the opportunity to draft to suit your franchise needs. If you have 25 players you like and you don't want to draft anymore that's okay as well. You would have no draft picks and just let WIS generate your AAA.

Lastly, let's say you have 25 players you like and decide that you want to draft 8 AAA players. But after a few rounds in the draft you decide, for whatever reason, that you are done with the draft. That's okay. You declare that you are done and your future picks in that draft only are now removed from the draft board. WIS will generate the remainder of your AAA players.

5. Split seasons only matter for the first draft to determine if someone is an unsigned veteran or not. If you have the rights to a split season player in year 2 and beyond you can pick which split you will be using for the year of play.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Texas was not yet in existence in 1970

In 1970 Texas was the new Washington Senators, as the original franchise had moved to Minn.

Let me offer an example and perhaps that will help:

You wind up with the 1970 Atlanta Braves. You go to the WIS search engine and put in Atlanta Braves, 1970 season and you will get a list of the offensive players from the 1970 Braves.

Then check that group of players against a list I will have posted to see if you have any rookies or any players that played for more than one team. In the case of the Braves you will find 3 players on the search results that meet one of those criteria. Those 3 players are going to the draft pool. You can choose how many of the 12 remaining players you want to keep. The players you keep will go to your keeper list.

Repeat the process for your pitchers. You will once again find 3 players that meet one of the criteria. Those 3 players are going to the draft pool. You then choose how many of the remaining 9 players you want to keep. The players you keep will go to your keeper list.

Let's say you kept all 12 position players and all 9 pitchers. Your keeper list will have 21 players.

You will need 4 draft picks to fill out your 25 man roster. You have 8 AAA slots available to you. You can draft to fill those AAA slots - in part or in full - or have WIS provide all or some of your AAA players. When it's all said and done you will have a 25 man roster and 8 AAA slots filled.

Rookies that were drafted will go through a free agency cycle where they will enter the player pool draft. I will track that and have those players clearly identified and posted.

All other players are going to be on your team until you cut or trade them. Except, of course, for the WIS generated AAA players.

I used the following for the team info:

1970 Major League Baseball Standings & Expanded Standings | Baseball-Reference.com

Texas was not yet listed.

There are 24 teams listed in the link above. There are 20 franchises in this league. All players in the WIS 1970 database from the 4 unused franchises will be in the draft.

After you draft your franchise you can call it anything you like. If someone always wanted to manage the Texas Rangers then they are free to name their team as such.

Sig I was just trying to point out for the (questioner, that if he was interested in the Rangers they are the 1970 Senators who move to Texas in 1972.

Just noticed that the Senators were one of the teams not available, sorry about that.

No worries.

Can we count you in for the league?

It is an interesting twist to the normal progressive and that is why those of us who are progressive junkies should have interest.
1-- 4 teams where every player is a FA--Washington Senators, Milwaukee Brewers, Montreal Expos, and San Diego Padres.
2--all players traded in 1970 and have a split season in the 1970 WIS database are FA's
3--all rookies have 5 year contracts and then become FA's--will be interesting to see how this impacts drafting-especially with the number of veterans available. The 1970 draft is loaded but with the 5 year contract it will be interesting.
4-- Picking one of the twenty teams and their roster (sans above subtractions) and deciding to go with a "win now" but low draft position or a "future oriented team" with a high draft position. If I have a choice, a top tier pick, I am not sure how I want to go.
5--Some teams have second year players not normally associated with that team but having access to those "good" years has to factor into the strategy.
6-- Drafting up to 33 players provides an interesting element as well.

I think this one will be lots of fun!

I am possibpy interested in this league - not sure if I have the time for another progressive right now, but am curious why all drafted FA’s aren’t given the same 5 year free agency, but just the rookies are?

It definitely adds a twist to the draft strategy, but would see some very good talent enter back into the draft pool that way as well.

Will we have the choice of taking one of the other 4 teams (Washington, Montreal, San Diego, Milwaukee) when we get near the end of the franchise draft ?

And if not, why not ? They may have better players than your original 20.

The rookie free agency mimics real life a little without having to take in to account years of service, age drafted, arbitration, etc. But you hit the nail on the head with your observation that it adds a twist and hopefully opens up several different strategies for team building.

I feel like part of the fun of building your team is having some stars you try and keep as long as possible. That's why not everyone will be a free agent.

It would be great if you joined. At the rate we are going we are probably a few weeks away from drafting. I am going to do a lot of record keeping that should reduce your time investment to some degree.

No. The franchises available will remain as is. Those better players from the unused franchises were intended to go to the initial draft pool on purpose so that there is more depth in the draft. You have the option to go after rookies or name brand veterans in the first draft. I wanted to make sure there is a handful of both options available.
