IMO, there is no cheating or secret difference maker that select coaches know. Like anything in life, success takes time and you have to put the work in.
For me, I’m always looking at what other successful coaches are doing (formations, substitution patterns, pass distance and distribution, down/distance tendencies, etc.). You’d be surprised at how much you can learn by just looking at pbp for an elite coach’s games.
If there is something I’m unsure of, I’ll run a test. For example, several years ago, I wondered whether I should use an extra blocker for passing, or put all 5 receivers in the pattern. I’ll run a season for both, and look at key stats (comp pct, yards/game, sacks, points/game) and compare across the two seasons. Many coaches do tests like that to improve their game plans.
