THE ODAC THREAD Topic

At the end of the regular season it looks like we will get 4-5 teams in the postseason barring an upset tourney winner or a long run by Emory & Henry or Bridgewater.

Tonight's 1st Round matchups:
West #4 Virginia Wesleyan vs. East #5 Bridgewater (-17)
East #3 Lynchburg vs. West #6 Roanoke (+56)
East #4 Emory & Henry vs. West #5 Randolph-Macon (+10)
West #3 Bethany vs. East #6 Hampden-Sydney (-7)
Bridgewater: has achieved the first two requirements of what they need to improve their 130 RPI (win over HS and 1st round against VW). Now it just takes a run to the final.
Lynchburg: Stands to get hurt by 1st round matchup even with a win. Will likely have to make the semifinals to have a legitimate shot at the NT. Roanoke pulled major upset in early rounds last year. Sets up a showdown with Washington & Jefferson for postseason bids/positioning for both.
Emory & Henry: 2nd round matchup could determine their postseason hopes, but likely needs to make the final to have a solid chance at the PI. Can't overlook dangerous, senior-laden Randolph-Macon in the 1st round.
Washington & Jefferson: awaits the winner of Lynchburg-Roanoke. Needs a win preferably against Lynchburg (due to RPI difference) to improve status of PI bid. Making the finals would clinch it.
Guilford: Looks to be solid for the NT bid, but must take care of business in quarterfinals against winner of Hampden-Sydney-Bethany.
Eastern Mennonite and Washington & Lee are playing for seeding with potential #1 seed on the line for WL.

Season 25 Conference Tournament 1st Round Recaps
Hampden-Sydney 94 Bethany 89
Tigers hold off Bison
Hampden-Sydney built a 20 point lead early in the second half lead by Ken Brown (19 points) and Jeff Jackson (13 points, 13 rebounds). The Tigers then had to hold on as Israel Stiles (23 points) and Earl Castleberry (18 points, 13 rebounds) lead a furious Bethany comeback that fell just short. The Tigers advance to face heavily favored Guilford in the quarterfinals.
Bridgewater 49 Virginia Wesleyan 47
Eagles win at buzzer
Bridgewater battled the Marlins to a stand-still until pulling away late in the game, but needed a tip in at the buzzer to keep their slim hopes of a postseason bid alive. Carlos Rogers lead the Eagles with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 blocks showing his all-around game, but it was his free throw shooting that kept Virginia Wesleyan in the game as he hit just 7-14 from the line. Tony Hinnenkamp (19 points) lead the Marlins back from 8 down late to tie it at 47 with 26 seconds , but Richard Thompson's tip in of a Rogers miss at the buzzer helped the Eagles escape with the win. Bridgewater advances to face conference champion Eastern Mennonite in the quarterfinals.
Emory & Henry 63 Randolph-Macon 52
Wasps bomb Yellow Jackets
Emory & Henry used their pressure defense and a three point barrage to wear down Randolph-Macon and pull away late for an 11 point win. Randy Perry (18 points) nailed 4-4 from beyond the arc and Terence Brooks (15 points) added 5-9 as the Wasps hit 11-17 as a team. Brian Grant lead the Yellow Jackets with 12 points in the losing effort. With the game still in doubt at 44-43 Wasps with 5:54 to go, Randy Perry went to work scoring 10 points in a 19-9 run to close it out. Emory & Henry faces the daunting task of taking on tournament favorite Washington & Lee with their postseason lives on the line.
Lynchburg 105 Roanoke 72
Hornets rout Maroons
Lynchburg dominated early and cruised to an easy win over Roanoke. James Puzinski (20 points, 11 rebounds) capped an early 15-0 run to open a 25-9 lead and James Atkinson (18 points) capped a 14-2 run to end the half putting the Hornets up 63-28. Robert Johnson (17 points) and Richard Handel (16 points) helped the Maroons win the second half, but the damage was already done. Lynchburg advances to face Washington & Jefferson in the quarterfinals in a game that will have postseason consequences for both teams. A win could put the Hornets in the national tournament while a Presidents victory could put Washington & Jefferson solidly in the postseason invitational.

Season 25 Conference Tournament Quarterfinal Recaps
Eastern Mennonite 80 Bridgewater 48
Royals slam door shut on Eagles
Eastern Mennonite jumped out early taking advantage of double teams on Donald Black (15 points and 11 rebounds) and Gerald Williams (10 points) as Tim Clontz (19 points on 5-10 3's) lit the Eagles up with 4 quick threes. The Royals never looked back as they opened a 46-25 halftime lead. Bridgewater was hampered by foul trouble on Carlos Rogers (3 points) and a second half injury to John Anglin (10 points), but never really challenged the East division champs. Mennonite advances to face Lynchburg in the semifinals.
Guilford 83 Hampden-Sydney 64
Quakers cruise to semifinals
Guilford used an early 8-0 run headed by two Thomas Henry (11 points)threes off the bench to take an 18-8 lead and beat the upstart Tigers by 19. The Quakers used a 10-0 run near the end of the half to take a 46-30 lead. Louis Bailey poured in 18 points on 4-4 three-pointers and Curtis Gamble added 14 points in the win. Hampden-Sydney cut the deficit to nine with 15:13 in the second half on Jeffrey King's 1-2 free throws. King led the Tigers with 15 points and was aided by Jeff Jackson's 12 points. After King's free throws, Guilford steadily pulled away extending its lead to 25 and cruising to the win.
Washington & Lee 78 Emory & Henry 60
Balanced attack leads Generals over Wasps
Washington & Lee used a steady barrage of offensive weapons to open a big lead in the first half and rolled to an easy win over Emory & Henry. The game was a battle early as Nelson Yablonski (5 points) nailed a three to make the score 13-11 Generals. Washington & Lee was led by Joseph Lee (15 points) who got plenty of help from Lee Houston (12 points), Alex Hoffman (11 points), and Donald Allen (10 points). The Generals lead 51-29 at the half. The Wasps showed up in the second half and the Generals began to struggle as the vaunted "40 minutes of unpleasantness" made life mildly annoying. Emory & Henry cut the lead to 15 late in the game, but it was too little, too late. Washington & Lee advances to face Guilford in the semifinals.
Lynchburg 92 Washington & Jefferson 91 (OT)
Buzzer-beater lifts Hornets past Presidents
Washington & Jefferson's William Nawrocki did everything he could overcoming a double team for most of the game and poured in 28 points on 7-13 shooting from beyond the arc, but it still was not enough as James Puzinski's tip in of a John Lee miss at the buzzer helped the Hornets advance. When Nawrocki wasn't hitting, backcourt mate Willie Pruett was adding 17 points on 4 of 6 threes. James Atkinson (20 points) led a balanced attack by Lynchburg as Lee (18 points and 11 rebounds), Puzinski (19 points and 14 rebounds), John Gregoire (17 points), and Terry Lambert (12 points) combined for 86 of the team's 92 points.
Things looked good early for the Presidents as Nawrocki and Steven Jeanlouis helped Washington & Jefferson to a 15 point lead in the first half, but the Hornets fought back to be down 41-35 at the half. Lynchburg got back in the game quickly in the second half and the teams battled to a tie in regulation as John Gregoire nailed a long jumper with eight seconds to go after the Presidents' Charles Cook hit one of two free throws. The overtime session was much like the second half as the teams traded the lead until Washington & Jefferson looked like they had taken control with a 3 point lead on a James Knopf bank shot with 1:09 to go. Puzinski hit from 15 feet out to cut it to one and Knopf was fouled, but missed both free throws to open the door for Puzinski's heroics. The Hornets move on to face top-seeded Eastern Mennonite. With the loss, the Presidents are likely out of postseason contention, while the Hornets are still squarely on the bubble.

Season 25 Conference Tournament Semifinal Recaps
Guilford 88 Washington & Lee 50
Quakers bomb hot-headed Generals
Defending conference tournament champion Guilford returned to the final by crushing Washington & Lee last night. The game started evenly until the Generals' Joseph Lee drew a foul that he didn't agree with. Lee lost his cool and drew a technical. Guilford went on a short run to go up 12-5, but Washington & Lee seemed to recover cutting the deficit back to one at 12-11. After trading baskets, Guilford began dominating as they went on a 14-0 run wrapped up by a three by Curtis Gamble. After a James Woodson three for W&L, the Quakers went on another tear outscoring the Generals 13-0. W&L finally got on the board with a 4-0 run at the end of the half, down 42-20, and hoped that would translate into a momentum swing.
It was not meant to be. Guilford jumped all over the Generals to start the 2nd half as Gamble and Louis Bailey dropped a couple of three-pointers leading to a 23-5 run that put W&L away. The Quakers thoroughly dominated the game leading at one point by 47 before settling in for the 88-50 win. Gamble led six Quaker players in double figures with 22 points on 4-5 from downtown. Jeremy Jeffrey was the only General in double figures with 10 points off the bench.
#9 Washington & Lee still stands to get a 3 seed in the national tournament, but the loss hurts as the Generals had hoped to get through the conference tournament and have a chance at a #1 seed. #16 Guilford got the signature win they were looking for and now stands a good chance to really boost their seeding.
Lynchburg 68 Eastern Mennonite 60
Strong 2nd half leads Hornets past Royals
Lynchburg needed a good start after getting stomped in their last outing against Eastern Mennonite and thought they had it as John Gregoire opened with a three. The Royals had other ideas in the first half, riding their big men, conference player of the year Donald Black and second team All-ODAC Gerald Williams to 10-0 run and a 7-0 run to take a 34-27 halftime lead. Black and Williams combined for 16 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.
The second half again started well for the Hornets as a John Lee turnaround jumper and another Gregoire three brought them back in the game. Once again the Royals leaned on their big men, pounding it inside to Black who converted 6-6 from the foul line to re-establish the lead. Down eight, Lynchburg turned to former starter James Atkinson who buried two three-pointers and assisted in another for Terry Lambert to cut the deficit to one. A Lee tip in provided the Hornets with their first lead since early in the game.
The teams traded the lead as Mennonite suddenly had a difficult time from the line Black missed two, then Williams and Black both missed the front end of a one and one. After Black failed to convert and with the Hornets leading by one, Bryan Kelly, who earned the start tonight over Atkinson, buried a huge three to put Lynchburg up 4 with 2:22 to play. After Black finally was able to convert some free throws, Kelly hit 1-2 free throws and James Puzinski hit two to extend the lead to 5. Tim Clontz, who struggled all night with his shooting going 2-12 from the field and 0-8 from deep, missed four three-pointers in the last 43 seconds to allow Lynchburg to hold on and advance.
Terry Lambert scored 18 points and Lee and Gregoire added 14 apiece in the win. Lynchburg outscored the East champs 41-26 in the second half. Donald Black finished with a game-high 20 points and frontcourt mate Gerald Williams added 14 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out late late in the game. Mennonite still looks strong for a high seed, possibly a #4 in the national tournament. Lynchburg should have secured a bid in the national tournament with the win.

Season 25 Conference Tournament Final
Lynchburg 58 Guilford 56
Hornets upset Quakers for first title in 13 seasons
Lynchburg used a slow pace and more late heroics from James Puzinski to upset 16th ranked Guilford and earn the automatic bid to the national tournament. Puzinski had a game high 12 points and was aided by Bryan Kelly and James Atkinson's 10 points apiece. John Lee did all the little things for the Hornets in adding 9 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the win. 1st team All-ODAC SF Curtis Gamble led the Quakers with 11 points and Nicholas Planas added 10 points. The loss does not keep Guilford out of the big dance, but certainly hurt their seeding as they were selected with the #9 seed and will get a tough 1st round matchup against perennially strong Redlands from the SoCal conference.
The first half was close throughout as the teams traded baskets and the lead for 20 minutes. Lynchburg briefly held a five point edge on Ricky Matranga's three-pointer late in the half, but Guilford answered with a putback by Planas followed by back-to-back steals and layups to retake the lead. Lee ended the mini-run with a jumper to provide the halftime score of 25-24 Lynchburg.
The second half started well for the Quakers as their bench provided them with an early lead. Matthew Smith knocked down a three and Herbert O'Bannion hit two free throws for a 31-27 lead with 14:54 to play. A Frank Pilgrim fadeaway a minute and a half later put Guilford up six. Lynchburg responded as Matranga converted two free throws and after a Pilgrim miss, Atkinson went to work much as he did against Eastern Mennonite nailing two threes midway through the second half to get the Hornets back in the game. Lee converted two free throws to put the Hornets up 42-38 and complete the 10-0 run with 8:39 to play. A Lee steal looked like it would continue the run and really put the Quakers on their heels, but Puzinski could not finish and Guilford ended the run on a three point play by Gamble.
Lynchburg held the lead until Chuck Bitner hit two free throws to tie it and, after a Puzinski short jumper, Gamble buried a three to put the Quakers up 51-50 with 1:49 . Terry Lambert scored to put the Hornets up one with 1:10 to go and set up the drama. Lynchburg's defense forced a miss by Planas and Gamble bailed out the Hornets with a foul with just 17 seconds allowing Lynchburg to try to run the clock out. It was only the 5th team foul on the Quakers forcing them to foul quickly. Unfortunately for Guilford they put a very good foul shooter in Kelly at the line who knocked down both attempts for a 3 point lead.
The Quakers were not done as Louis Bailey, who had been quiet all night, nailed a huge three against a perimeter heavy defense to tie it with just seven seconds remaining. That set up James Puzinski for his second game winner in the last three nights as he knocked down a jumper for the two point edge. Bailey's desperation shot at the buzzer fell harmlessly to the ground and the Hornets claimed the conference tournament title. With the win, Lynchburg greatly improved their seeding getting the #10 in the South opposite Western New England.

Western New England 54 Lynchburg 48
Golden Bears wear down Hornets
W. New England controlled the tempo and eventually wore down Lynchburg taking advantage of poor foul shooting and turnovers to beat the Hornets and advance to the 2nd round. William Somerville led the Golden Bears with 13 points and Gregory Hunt chipped in 11 for the victors. John Lee and John Gregoire led the Hornets with a measly 8 points apiece. The Hornets, who had shot well from the foul line much of the year, managed only 14-21 from the line and Lee a number of points clanging off the rim in the loss.
The early portion of the game was highlighted by runs, starting well for Lynchburg with a quick 5-0 run, but turnovers and steals got the Golden Bears back in the game with a 7-0 run. The Hornets answered back with an 8-0 run and seemed to be in good shape after Ricky Matranga hit a jumper to put Lynchburg up 23-16 at 2:03. However, WNE went on a 7-0 run to end the half to tie the score at 23.
The second half saw neither team able to pull away and both teams went cold after Gregoire hit two free throws at 6:07 to tie it at 43. Hunt tapped in a miss to break the tie at 2:57. After Terry Lambert hit 1-2 FTs, Frank Ball scored inside followed by a Richard Czapski lay in giving the Golden Bears a sizable advantage in a low scoring game. Somerville nailed the coffin shut with a three as WNE advanced with the six point win.
Eastern Mennonite 89 Pitt-Greensburg 53
Royals get sweet revenge on Bobcats
Eastern Mennonite found themselves down 4-2 early and then turned it on and didn't let up. The Royals went on a 29-5 tear and never looked back. Donald Black and Glen Constance led the charge with 19 points each. Constance got his off the bench and added 12 rebounds as well. Gerald Williams and Steve Elliott also scored 13 points each. Fred Vowell led the Bobcats with 13 points.
The first half run by the Royals took up nearly 12 minutes and led to a 45-24 halftime advantage. The Bobcats put up a small fight early in the second half, but really never challenged as they got steamrolled by a powerful and angry Eastern Mennonite squad that was ousted by this same Pitt-Greensburg team in last year's first round. The Royals move on to face #5 seed East Texas Baptist in the second round.
Washington & Lee 67 Ithaca 55
Generals ground Bombers
Washington had 14 steals and forced 20 Ithaca turnovers as they leaned on their pressure defense to lead them into the second round. Lee Houston led the Generals with 11 points and Joseph Lee and Donald Allen added 10 points each. Ithaca was led by Alonzo Gomez who scored a game high 13 points.
The game got off to a slow start, but W&L began forcing turnovers and getting easy buckets behind James Woodson and the rest of the Generals' guards. Washington & Lee went up 13 in the first half on a Zachary Toothman 3-point play and it looked like the Generals were going to pull away. However the Bombers had other ideas, closing the gap to seven before the half on a Kenneth Rhodes three.
W&L re-established the lead quickly in the second half and put it in cruise control for a while. Ithaca was bound and determined to make a game of it as they went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 5 at the 10:45 mark. A Larry Stelzer three cut it to 2 with 5:51 to go, but Woodson answered with a three at 3:33 that started a 12-2 run to end the game. Washington & Lee advances to the second round to face #11 seed Manchester.
Guilford 96 Redlands 86
Quakers win thriller over Bulldogs
In the thriller of the night, Guilford finished strong in a very tight game to knock off #8 seed Redlands. Nicholas Planas led the Quakers with 22 points and was helped by Chuck Bitner and Louis Bailey's 18 points apiece. George Allen and Jimmie Carbonell led the Bulldogs with 15 points each.
Both teams started strong with no lead greater than two for the first 11:40, then Guilford went cold. the Quakers struggled over the next five minutes and the Bulldogs took advantage running off 9 unanswered points capped by a Thomas Pietrowski bank shot. Even after Planas ended the run with two free throws, Redlands kept the pressure on and matched the Quakers basket for basket building a 12 point lead at 47-35. Guilford finally chipped away at the lead at the end of the first half to go in at intermission down 49-42.
Guilford opened the second half on an 8-0 run to tighten the game up. The game became a battle of attrition with neither team able to pull away until the Quakers finally took over. After a Pietrowski turnover, Bailey finally burned the Bulldogs for doubling the post tandem of Bitner and Planas by nailing consecutive threes, the second coming at 2:47 remaining. From there, the Quakers pulled away to close the game and win by 10. Guilford moves on to the second round to face #1 seed Principia.

Principia 82 Guilford 69
Quakers fall short of Panthers
Guilford was involved in yet another tight game, but this time could not come up with the big plays and fell to Principia 82-69. The Panthers were led by Matthew Gentle (17 points and 5 steals) and Anthony Shank (17 points and 10 rebounds) who helped to force 20 turnovers that made a large difference in a closer game than the score indicated. The Quakers got a balanced attack led by Curtis Gamble (12 points), Louis Bailey (11 points), and Nicholas Planas (10 points). As a team, Guilford only managed 5-7 free throws, well off their average of 19-27.
The first half again was a very tight one for the Quakers, but they began to pull away midway through the half on a 9-1 run finished off by a Frank Pilgrim steal and lay up. The Quakers kept up the pressure defense after a Shank jumper scoring a quick six points in 45 seconds to go up 30-18. Principia cut the lead to five but a Gamble lay in just before the half provided an eight point Quaker lead at the break.
The Panthers used a strong start to the second half to quickly get back in the game. The whistles began going against the Quakers followed by a Marty Moultrie tip in to give the Panthers the lead at 16:00 . That tip in came in the middle of an 18-0 run by Principia capped by a Frank Hayes three. From there, Principia essentially owned the game and only a late spurt by Gamble scoring six points cut into a dominant second half by the Panthers.
Washington & Lee 76 Manchester 63
Generals shoot way into Sweet 16
Washington & Lee shot 56% from the field and Joseph Lee (23 points) buried 7 of 10 three-pointers as the Generals advanced to the Sweet 16 with a win over the Spartans of Manchester. Manchester got a solid effort from Nathanael Fields and Charles Chipman with 14 points each. Lee got help in the backcourt from Alex Hoffman who chipped in 18 points.
Manchester got off to a red hot start behind Fields' 3 three-pointers early, but W&L kept plugging away until Robert Stucker made 1-2 free throws to take the lead for good - running off a 16-4 spurt to end the half at 38-26.
The second half was just a continuation offensively of the first half for the Generals as they answered everything the Spartans could muster. Manchester did cut the lead to 9 on Fields' three free throws, but Lee hit consecutive threes and got a steal and lay up to seal the game. W&L moves on to face #2 seed Elizabethtown in the Sweet 16.
Eastern Mennonite 63 East Texas Baptist 52
Black-led Royals DEFeat Tigers
Defense was the name of the game in this battle of top teams. Donald Black finally provided enough offense with 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Royals to Sweet 16. Steve Elliott and Tim Clontz helped Black with 10 points each and as a team the Royals knocked down 19-20 free throws. East Texas Baptist got 15 points from David Alba and 14 points from George Edenfield but he struggled to 2-9 from three-point range.
The game got off to a very slow start as the teams were deadlocked at 2-2 until 13:34 in the first half. The Tigers went on a 6-3 "run," but Mennonite stayed close and then took the lead back on two Black free throws. After an Alba three, Clontz and Robert Shoup nailed threes to take control of the first half and held on for a 28-25 lead.
ETB came out firing in the second half and quickly took the lead, but Black was there to answer again to keep the game close. The Royal defense then took over holding the Tigers scoreless from 15:16 to 8:49 during a 12-0 run that put Mennonite up for good. The Royals then rolled to an 11 point win and moved on to face a very powerful #1 seed in Adrian from the MIAA.
