Too much to do in life. Unfortunately, my wife is a little sour on the whole "fake baseball" thing. I am a busy man, with a busy life, a busy wife, and a busy little 2-year old son.
On that note, I am going to post a team outlook for season 5 here and I encourage all owners to do the same if they wish.

COMMISSIONER’S OFFICE: TELLURIDE, CO -- Commissioner Rick Randall enters the crowded press room and sits in front of the microphone to make what has been tabbed as a very important announcement. “Ok everyone, here is the scoop on Internationals; It is all tied into my salary cap idea. I actually have let it slide in the past as 2 or 3 times the cap has been exceeded without anyone (or nearly anyone, since obviously I noticed) noticing.

The salary cap is an idea that I came up with after working through 4 or 5 FA periods in the test leagues before HBD was “released to the public” and when we got rolling on the 1st “real” HBD season in Aaron—seeing how freely owners were offering up ridiculous contracts to mediocre talent really troubled me with this game. My thought was that so many people would go for the “win now” approach and then bail (as often happens in Sim League Baseball progressive leagues) and that many Worlds would sit waiting for replacement owners while losing steam with the current ownership base.

Putting a salary cap on individual player contracts would make owners more accountable for their franchise’s accounting—at least that was (is) the hope. My hope being that knowing that you could only spend “x” amount of money/player makes everyone think things out a bit more--things like the draft, minor league FA’s, training/medical/scouting/etc., and, of course, Internationals.

Another thing that I want to avoid is having owners put all their eggs in one basket, and have that basket explode—in essence crippling the franchise and potentially causing an owner to lose interest to a point where they don’t feel that the unfortunate team is worth keeping. The Int FA situation is different in my mind than MLB where a team can, oh, I don’t know, BLOW $50m+ on an unproven commodity and then reallocate funds to compensate for someone’s idiocy. Here, we set our budgets and THEN get to look at what we can afford with our budget.

A couple of suggestions to keep in mind; #1) If you have a top 7-10 pick in the upcoming draft, don’t waste your money on an international—you likely will get at least one sure-fire MLB star if you pre-rank your players at all. #2) If you do blow your wad on an international and just plan to recover in the following season as you get compensation for not signing your current season’s draft class, just remember that “First round picks that don't sign result in a compensation pick for the drafting franchise” (straight from the Knowledge Base and FAQ). That means in the supplemental first round (33+). Looking through the league history, no player drafted 33 or higher has signed for under $1.0m.

Having said all that, the fact that we are in our 5th season here in NABCL, and seeing that we have had a grand total turnover of EIGHT (!!!!!) owners, and looking at the fact that I “know” almost all of you in here, I think that it is safe to assume that no one is going for the one-and-done approach. We are all in this thing for the long haul; most of us are in or have been in other leagues and can tell that NABCL is our #1 team because it is the #1 World and if we all went broke tomorrow, we would each still beg for enough money to keep our team in NABCL alive and kicking. So I feel that it is safe for me to take off the training wheels and let each of you spend your money as you see best fits your franchise’s needs.

I know that we are already in the middle of heated Int. bidding for a couple of studs (well, I assume that is the case—my budget for Internationals is ZERO so I don’t see what all the fuss is about) and that this may catch some off guard. My answer to anyone that fails to see this in time and as a result loses out on their bid despite offering the “max” is this; if you are in a bidding war for an International you need to check your team every cycle. There is no perfect time for me to do this, but NOW is the time that I am going to do this.

So, to wrap up, NO CAP ON INT. Feel free to throw your ticket-paying fan-base’s money around at your leisure…just don’t come whining to me if you can’t sign any of your draft picks as a result—you have been warned.” We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Good luck. It might take 7 more seasons for 3 spots to open.
