Game 106: Fred Norman makes sure that the Riders don't go into a slide, throwing eight shutout innings against Detroit to win his 15th game, 6-0. Larry Hisle and Mike Lum hit home runs.
Game 107: Ramon Hernandez blows ANOTHER save, his ninth of the season, this time allowing five hits in the ninth to erase a 5-2 Rider lead. Darold Knowles finally gets the last out before Detroit takes the lead (but walks a batter to load the bases first). All ends well, though, as Larry Hisle blasts a home run in the bottom half to win it 6-5.
Game 108: Another wild one! Jon Matlack and Wilbur Wood match scoreless frames for seven innings, and the first relievers in throw two more blank innings each, sending the game to extras with no score. Darold Knowles relieves Elias Sosa with two down in the 10th and promptly walks the first two batters. The next two batters hit singles, and Detroit is up 3-0. Dave LaRoche finally gets the final out, striking out Ron Santo. Jack Aker enters for Detroit and retires Richie Hebner before allowing singles to Eddie Leon and Mike Lum. Larry Hisle comes to the plate... BLAMM!!!! His three-run homer ties the score. Bill Champion relieves, allows a single to Nate Colbert and walks Bill Robinson before retiring Thurman Munson for the second out. Champion then throws a wild pitch, putting runners at second and third for Charlie Spikes, who shoots a grounder through the hole to field, bringing home Colbert for the winner!
Milwaukee heads to Cleveland looking for some less stressful competition.
