A well-played game by us. I suppose if I'm going to come up with something to complain about, it'd be our assist-to-turnover ratio. Also, the fact that this game does nothing for us.

a direct quote from Rails' thread that I want to apply to my team:

"Off. Efficiency: PTS/FGA+TO+(1/2*FTA). Based on this info it also appears we are giving up too many 2nd chances as a team. I think championship teams will have about a 1.00 offensive efficiency and rebound about 40% of their offensive reb. opportunities. I think avg. teams will be at about .85/33%."

so far for Fordham: points = 1648; FGA = 1096; TO = 247; FTA = 583...

going to the calculator...the denominator for us is 1634.5, so our offensive efficiency is roughly 1.01...
[updated] we have, as of Nov. 2nd, 276 offensive rebounds and have 625 missed shots; 276/625 = 44.2%

Huh. Perhaps we have a championship caliber team.

Let's apply it to my opponents...

Totals 531 1096 123 315 463 583 248 745 240 247 136 112 355 1648
Opp. Totals 462 1108 90 289 284 410 223 598 238 287 109 68 435 1298

okay, so let's see...
points - 1298; fg attempts - 1108; FT attempts - 410; turnovers - 287; offensive rebounds - 244; missed shots - 711

offensive rebounding opportunities: 244/711 = 34.3%
offensive efficiency: 1298/(1108 + 287 + 205) = 1298 / 1600 = 0.81125

sweet
[edited on 11/2 to deal with revelations on how the offensive rebounding stuff works...missed shots, not defensive rebounds, are the other factor]

Turns out Rails said I was wrong about the offensive rebounding percentage, that it should go OREB/FG Misses. That means we go 248/565 instead of 623...43.9%
In terms of the game at hand, which isn't factored in to that calculation, we didn't play well but won anyways, and are now...

CB, just looking at some of the stats. I'm trying to reconcile how my MSU team could allow their opponents (w. very similar SOS to yours) basically the same offensive efficiency, despite having a huge def advantage, and about 10 pts each at sp and ath. Plus my top nine guys are all between A- and A+ defensive iq.
Just seems like there should be a pretty clear defensive advantage for my team, but it doesn't seem to exist. And let me emphasize I'm not trying to take anything away from what you've done at Fordham, which you know I think is awesome. But the #'s just aren't adding up ... and it's not just when I compare them to your team, but plenty of others as well that shouldn't be within shouting distance of me. Thoughts?
11/4/2007 10:04 AM
I don't think defense can get much better than mine had been performing throughout the year at the point I made the analysis. With that said, I firmly prefer zone/press to man-to-man. I don't have any theories on why a mid-level team like mine would be able to run a better zone/press than MSU's man-to-man, except that maybe it's a better system. Or it could be that after hitting the 0.85 mark or so, it gets harder and harder for teams to defend better. Diminishing returns. But really, what it keeps coming back to for me is that I've never had great consistency with man-to-man defense, and I've seen plenty of flukes there. Stuff that shouldn't happen but does. I don't know why, I just know what I like to run.

Yeah, you may have answered the question. I have long felt that zone yielded unrealistically good results for the type of defensive players in it. Maybe that is the big difference, you might've hit the nail on the head. I certainly can't come up with a better explanation.
