I'm not smart enough to follow probably - I haven't paid enough attention as I'm usually just scrambling to figure out why everyone else has a full bullpen and I'm stuck using 1981 Rollie Fingers as my closer.

You are right, but I think you have to specify which one you draft. Otherwise you could switch around in season or else just be stuck with the wrong one. Am I making sense?
If there is more than one with the same season, you can pick the full or split season, you don't have to specify.
There can only be one 2016 Miller for the league, just like there can be only one 1902 Bernhard whom I drafted.
