Flyers 6....UGH!! Topic

I'm doing my best to not get excited about JVR yet, just because I haven't had a chance to see him play. Getting harder and harder to ignore him though, everything I read reminds me of Kerr and/or LeClair. From what I hear he doesn't really have much of a mean streak but seeing "hammering opponents" added to the list puts thoughts of Lindros in my head. Gonna go back to ignoring him for a year, think Giroux...

The problem I hear about JVR is that he is not listening to the Flyers. They wanted him to go pro last year and this year and isn't listening. Also I think I read last year that they didn't really want him to go to the UNH because of their rink size but he went there anyway. Glad he is doing well but I wish he would listen to the Flyers more.

Can't wait to see Giroux play, I said last year before the season started that he was too good to stay in Juniors and was ready for the NHL but looking back I can't think of an open spot for him and would hate to see him burried on the 4th line like they did with Downie. So the way I see it 1 of Upshall, Umberger, Lupul, or Knuble has to go to make room for Giroux. I want to keep them all but room needs to be made on the roster and cap to fit some of these guys in.

At least one of those (unfortunately, with Carter added to that list of possibilities) will be gone by default, we need blueline help bad and those are the chips we have to make it happen. I'd take Upshall off the list, he doesn't have the trade value to get us what we need and I'd hate to see him go anyway. Any of the others, with maybe Nodl and or picks should get us what we need. The problem for Homer will be finding a dance partner. Any team could use a potential 30 goal scorer but how many have an extra quality 2nd pairing Dman floating around? We're also far from the only team looking for a guy like that. This should be a less eventful but just as interesting summer as last years.

I'm kind of glad van Riemsdyk has decided to play elsewhere for a while (be nice if it was the Phantoms though). By the point he comes to the big club Hatcher and Knuble will be off the books.

From Philly.com

Free-agent update. The Flyers are negotiating with potential restricted free agents Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger and Randy Jones. Holmgren said he was hopeful of signing them but was not especially close.

He was close to signing Riley Cote, another potential free agent on July 1.

In addition to signing the Big Three, one of Holmgren's off-season goals is to add a defenseman. Brian Campbell, John-Michael Liles, Mark Streit and Mike Commodore are among potential free agents who could fit the bill. (my thought, I don't know why the Philly reporters keep bringing up Campbell there is no way we can afford him)

Bolstering the roster and staying within the salary cap, which is expected to reach $55 million, will be tricky, but Holmgren seemed confident.

Gagne progressing. Simon Gagne, who missed the final 27 games after suffering a concussion, is working out in Quebec and champing at the bit to return, Holmgren said.

Gagne has no ill effects from the concussion, and there's no way of knowing if he's fully recovered until he starts absorbing regular contact.

Holmgren said Gagne needed to be in better condition than he was last year when camp starts.

Notes. Holmgren said there was a better than 50-50 chance that veteran defenseman Derian Hatcher would return to the club.

Prospal traded to TB for a 7th rounder.

His invisibility in the playoffs did not help his cause w/ Holmgren & Stevens.

Flyers Sim Hockey wonder -

Ex-Flyer Miroslav Dvorak dead at 56

By Sam Carchidi

Inquirer Staff Writer

Miroslav Dvorak, named the winner of the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Flyers' top defenseman in 1983-84 - and a player whose off-ice demeanor reminded some teammates of a legendary Saturday Night Live skit - died Wednesday in the Czech Republic after a long battle with throat cancer, the club announced yesterday.
Nicknamed "Cookie," Mr. Dvorak was 56. He spent three productive seasons with the Flyers, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Finals against Edmonton in 1985, his last year with the team.

General manager Paul Holmgren called Mr. Dvorak a solid player and "fun-loving guy who couldn't wait for practices to end so he could go and have a few beers. He was a throwback-type guy."

The two were teammates for two seasons in the early '80s.

"He was an older player when he came here, but he was a strong player and a pretty good offensive player," Holmgren said. "He would be a good player in today's game."

Holmgren said Mr. Dvorak reminded him of the "wild and crazy guys," Georg and Yortuk Festrunk, played by Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin. The actors played bizarre (and hysterically funny) Czech brothers in a recurring skit for Saturday Night Live.

Mr. Dvorak "dressed funny, and he talked funny, but he could laugh at himself," Holmgren said.

Before the 1982-83 season, the Flyers bolstered their blue line by drafting Mr. Dvorak, a 30-year-old Czech national-team standout, and acquiring Mark Howe and Brad McCrimmon.

Mr. Dvorak, who was drafted in the third round, had permission from the communist Czechoslovakian government to play in the NHL in exchange for financial considerations for the Czech hockey federation.

Mr. Dvorak spoke no English when he arrived, and he became close friends with his defensive partner, Brad Marsh, who bought a Czech-English dictionary and took the player under his wing.

"I remember the first time I met Miro at the airport, I shook his hand, and he didn't know a word of English," said Marsh in Stan Fischler's book, Greatest Players and Moments of the Philadelphia Flyers. "That night, we roomed together after an exhibition game. I knew how to say beer in Czech (pivo), so I ordered up some beers from room service.

"With my dictionary, it was amazing what I could accomplish over a couple of beers."

Mr. Dvorak adapted quickly to the smaller NHL rink and more physical style. He had 37 points and a plus-27 rating in 1982-83, his first year with the Flyers.

In his three years with the team, Mr. Dvorak collected 85 points and was plus-58. After leaving the Flyers, he played two seasons in Germany and split his final pro season between Germany and his native Czechoslovakia.

I think we get a conditional pick in '09 as well if he signs with Tampa. Word on the streets is it will be a 4th. No way we could sign him even if we wanted to, he was a temporary replacement for Gagne. Just getting something back for him is better than nothing.

Now the Flyers picks are 1st round, 4th, 6th, and 2 7ths. I think we will see a bit more trading with the Flyers at the draft, I can't see them not having a 2nd round pick.

Rumor is that Vancouver is looking to trade their 1st for a top 6 forward. This could be the best way to shed some $$$. Hate to get rid of Knuble but this could be a good trade off. Vancouver picks 10th overall.

As a canuck fan I sure hope we are looking at Carter instead.
6/18/2008 10:35 PM
I'd do it in a second (Knuble) but I doubt anyone but one of our young core players gets us that 10th pick.
6/18/2008 11:26 PM
I don't think many teams will be offering a quality young player as young players are cap friendly.

paul71- Carter won't be available he will be signed before July 1st. Umberger might be out there though, but he passed on the Canucks before so I don't think he will go back.

Not too bad but they are overpaying him a bit.

If it is $5mil cap hit then that puts the Flyers at $52.277. Any idea when we find out what the cap will be?
