Orlando should wait until the end of the year and let Dwight determine where he wants to go - then the only leverage they'll have is the extra year - I'm sure Cuban will be happy to throw a protected first their way

Dwight is going to New Jersey or staying in Orlando.  He isn't going anywhere else unless he is traded.

yeah, except he also said he'd sign in Dallas and they're in a position to do that outright this summer and will have a better team for him to work with

I like how you think he's staying in Orlando though - that's cute

He can go to Dallas with Deron Williams if they take less than the max.

Dallas, in order to clear anywhere near enough cap room to go after both Williams and Howard, would have to renounce Kidd and Terry, and find a trading partner for Odom, Marion, and Haywood in which they wouldn't take on any salary.  In other words almost impossible.  I mean Dirk alone makes almost 21 million next year (add in Beaubois, Jones, and just minimum contract cap holds and you are at close to 30 million).

Dallas is in the market for one of the two, but not both unless they take MLE type contracts.

But even assuming Dallas could get close to max, why would they go there when they can both play in Brooklyn without taking less money.  And frankly, Brooklyn might very well be better positioned to win a title going forward than Dallas would be.  Sure there is no Dirk in Brooklyn, but Dirk is old, and the Nets would still have Brook Lopez, Marshon Brooks, Kris Humphries, and two picks in the up coming draft (currently #4 and #19 - which according to nbadraft.net would be Thomas Robinson and Fab Melo).

Odom expires this year and they still have an amnesty for Haywood - if they could move Marion they could probably do it

and Brooklyn doesnt have Dirk and even old Dirk is enough to get a team a title (evidently) - they can worry about rebuilding in new jersey or contending in dallas with the pieces already in place

but the real point is both new jersey and dallas can sign dwight out right and the magic seem to be acting like they hold some kind of card - the only card they have at the moment is the ability to offer an extra year on the contract (an extra year of dealing with a mediocre team run by incompetent management while your title window narrows)

in fact not only does Odom's contract expire (well team option so same diff) but he may not even make it to the end of the season because he's apparently gone awol and is talking retirement

As stated by felonius, they only need to find a new home for Marion and it becomes logical.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, albeit it's more likely than him staying in Orlando.

I don't believe Marion is going anywhere. Kidd and Terry both have expiring contracts. That alone frees up 21million, Plus, Odom and amnesty Of Haywood. Cuban has done a nice job of positioning the Mavs for a run at both Williams and Howard.

Even if they moved all those players they would have 30 million or so in salary, which means if the cap is in the 58 million range they could only start Williams and Howard at 14 million or so, and could then only offer them 4 year contracts with less percentage raise increases.  They could make a lot more money in Brooklyn (Williams could even get the extra year and extra money).  Brooklyn also has the ability to trade with Orlando to give Dwight the extra year, bigger increases, and bigger starting salary, something Dallas can't do (they could get him the extra year and bigger raises, but that starting salary is stuck).

The money won't be close and frankly the rest of that Dallas team will be awful outside of their big 3, the Nets will have a lot more depth even with missing that third star.

The Nets will have Anthony Morrow and Marshon Brooks and about 12 cap holds -everyone else is either expiring (Okur, Humphries, Stevenson), restricted (lopez), have player options (Farmar, SWilliams, DWilliams),  or a team option (Damion James)

Ya srsly- Anthony Morrow and Marshon Brooks can score a lil but aren't exactly world beaters.  And when you have Billy King handpicking the rest of the team, I wouldn't expect too much.  Dallas is just a much better run organization and would probably end up surrounding them with better players regardless.

They will have the two rookies as well unless they trade the picks and they will have Lopez at his Q.O or 7.6 as a cap hold.  You also forgot Petro's 3.5 million.

They should easily have room to offer Williams and Howard full max contracts, and still keep a lot of the supporting staff.

Problem is that the supporting staff is a steaming pile of AIDS

We're basically talking the 11-25 team that we've been seeing lately + Howard.  Howard will make them a 50+ win team because he's awesome, but they don't have anybody other than those 2 that is really going to help.

first of all did you just try to score a point using Johan Petro? because, because...   give me a minute to stop laughing...

ok Im back

second Im pretty sure exercising the QO just means Lopez is a restricted FA and that the Nets therefore maintain the option to match another team's offer to him- which they wont do if that offer is over a certain limit which it most likely will be - I could see someone giving him 8-10m (maybe more - he's a **** poor rebounder but he's pretty effective offensive option)

and in any event Im not altogether sure that he pairs that well with Howard or would just get in his way
