Well the under 10 points doesn't really surprise me. Salem State has a very good defense and I would imagine most are playing slowing down the pace to counter the skill and depth.

I chose MMA and Husson because the SOS numbers are quite similar and while Barret is right in that there are sample size issues here, I'm not sure how you're going to get a better sample than what we already have at this point. And we are talking over 1,000 possessions. That does filter a lot of the noise.

And there is an auto-pilot issue but Salem State has been running a -1 defense for most or all of the season. Given the fact that they have outstanding defenders at every single position, I'm really not sure that the auto-pilot transferred into much of an advantage. I know that when I played them, I didn't do any special game planning because I didn't really see anything in particular I could exploit.

So even though there are issues, in my opinion the sample size should be significant enough that:

-- Salem State should *definitely* have a better field goal percentage than MMA.

-- Salem State should *probably* have a better three point percentage than MMA. Probably because maybe going -1 all season really does put a team at a competitive disadvantage. I doubt it but maybe. (And for context, part of what has me in such a tizz about this is the fact that my Knight team ran -2 all season with a good defense rating but terrible IQ team and finished #4 in DII with a 28.3 FG3%.)

-- Salem State should *definitely* force more turnovers than Husson.

And all of this has me shaking my head because based on minutes played, here's the "average" player that took the court for those three teams when you weight by minutes played:

Husson: 40.6 ATH, 51.0 SPD, 37.7 DEF, 35.8 BLK, 50.1 REB

MMA: 41.2 ATH, 51.6 SPD, 53.7 DEF, 25.8 BLK, 34.5 REB

Salem State: 49.7 ATH, 59.7 SPD, 68.2 DEF, 28.3 BLK, 38.7 REB

And of course, don't forget Salem State has the massive IQ advantage going with the 12 seniors.

I'm really trying to understand how to best utilize defense in this game and my weird results over in Knight plus the results in this conference have me throwing my hands in the air.

Just went to see how Salem State is fairing in DIII and they don't make the list in FG% or FG3%. No real surprise on the FG3%.

They are 25th in forcing turnovers.

Looking at that list brings another interesting team in the equation. Augsburg has a very similar SOS to the other three.

No real surprise that Augsburg doesn't match up well on the defensive end with Salem State either. But that press defense is holding opponents to a better FG% and forces more turnovers. And the FG3% is just 1.9% worse.

HUSSON'S NEW SONS Season 31 edition

WELCOME TO BANGOR KIDS

Not overly impressed with the talent this season available, and also a lil too busy in the real world to wait for drop downs Coach Diesel looks like he took the hey lets take the first three kids who show any interest philosophy with this class. (which he did) This class will never be great but will hopefully develop into solid contributors.

cue spotlights, lasers, and ABBA "take a chance on me"

and now with no further ado let me introduce your new Husson Eagles:

Larry "DA HOSS" Moss 6'0 SG 186 lbs

Moss was the first to show any love to Husso this season and so despite the low overall rating, we did not have the heart to turn away Da Hoss. Despite the 402 he does have a solid stats in his cores. He fits into the Husson motto of just average baby! He will not stand out good or bad.

Manuel "the Mounty" Clark PF 2.01 Meters 98.88 Kilograms

Coming across the border from Toronto he should be an asset to our hockey team this year, wait we signed him to the basketball team. He will never be an offensive force but should develop into a feared presence on the defensive end of the court. He may be asked to take the redshirt just depends on how he does opening practice.

"Boring" Brian Anderson C 6'9" 219 lbs

Move along people nothing to see here, he makes me sleepy just talking about Boring Brian anderzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. he is going to be first choice for the redshirt with the hope that a year on the pine with the 80 WE he can improve those pedestrian numbers enough to be a force by the time he is an upperclassman.

And to think I ever wanted to shun the diesel when he first joined the NAC. Well done, lad...well done.

UMPI Recruiting Season 31:

Didn't go quite as well as I was hoping; most of my targeted dropdowns were getting snatched up by higher prestige schools before they dropped to me. There was one that I could have battled for, and with the amount of money I have it might have been worth it...but no sense in dwelling on that now.

Darin Dillon (PG)
Darin is solid, but not spectacular in all the important areas. He will be performing in a backup roll for two seasons, so this will give him ample time to develop. His speed/def combo should make him a very dangerous defender as an upperclassman.

Leroy Dunfee (SF)
Dunfee could be something special, though this will probably be one of the rare instances in which I don't redshirt a SF. Passing and work ethic are his biggest knocks. Adequate defense combined with good ath/speed will make him a threat. There is one rating, however, that really stands out: he steps onto campus with a 61 perimeter rating. He might be the best offensive true freshman I have had in quite some time.

Richard Forte (C)
This guy is a project. First the bad: he doesn't defend or shoot free throws and he won't work too hard to improve either (or anything else for that matter). However, he is very fast for a big man. With a redshirt season, he could end up graduating with a speed rating close to 70; in this system that makes him a dangerous man.

Johnson State Recruiting Season 31

1st signee: Bobby Carballo (PG) - A local kid who committed early to the Badgers, Bobby has low, but improvable speed and ball handling. He is a good passer and has solid work ethic and provides some help on the boards. Due to Bobby's early interest, the coaching staff decided to forgo seeking a better PG to focus on the 2nd recruit. Unfortunately a highly sought after target (Carl Nguyen) fell late and could've been wearing the green, navy, and white. With Carballo's WE, he should develop into a solid PG and is likely to be a backup for the majority of his career anyway.

2nd signee: Edgar Stone (SF) - A big-time athlete who does not overwhelm you with any other categories, but is improvable in all and is a solid rebounder for a SF. We are hoping he will take a redshirt (evals suggest he is a team player) to improve on his core stats. He has good WE which should lead to quality offseason improvement and will be ready to take over the SF position by his sophomore year assuming he takes the RS.

I was pleased with the Stone signing. I think he'll be a player in the press happy North division. He can take care of the ball, but doesn't lose much in other categories. I regretted offering a scholarship too early to Carballo and considered pulling it away, but did not want to lose him and end up with nothing. I'm not happy with his speed (though it isn't terrible) nor his ball handling for a PG that needs to contribute right away. I think this team is due for a letdown after a surprising run to the PI last year. I'm hoping lightning will strike twice and we can overachieve again.

Thomas Recruits -- Season 31

Allan Palmer (SG)
-- Solid recruit but I kept hoping for something better. Palmer dropped down a good 24 hours before I finally went after him. Given that I couldn't find better options, I'm quite happy nobody else ventured into the Black Hills to grab him. Nothing overly special about Palmer but he mixes above average physical skills and above average guard skills. Defense is shaky but still three times that of the players that used to be recruited to Thomas.

Nelson Keene (SF) -- Thomas recruits a true small forward for the first time in 10 seasons. After taking the redshirt, Keene should be an excellent two year starter after acting as Cedric Miller's backup for the first two. Keene's rebounding is his worst quality. That's bad since it's probably the most important quality for a SF. The good in that is that it's still a ranking of 27 which can easily be improved and also means that all the other categories are even better. In the six skill categories, the average rating is 33 which is about as good as I've been able to recruit. Keene has great athleticism with a ranking of 55 and acceptable speed with 38. Keene's biggest problems are with free throws and work ethic. Free throws are a true problem with a ranking of 'D'. Work ethic is 36 which is lower than I like for a redshirt but I started out with a worse work ethic two seasons ago for the Cedric Miller experiment (with inconclusive results so far).

Overall

For the second year in a row, I a crazy amount of cash in the bank. I was looking to spend it this time but couldn't get anybody I really wanted to drop to me and the two I went after had zero competition. Given that I spent most of the recruiting period away from the computer, this realistically is probably on the high end of the scale for what I could have done. Both recruits should be good starters by the time they are seniors but I fear perhaps not great.

PG: Dale Peterman, Lasell

SEASON 31 SENIORS – 2nd Team
PG: Dustin Clifford, Lasell
SG: David Hollowell, Thomas
SF: Jake Watlington, Husson
PF: John Mooney, Lassell
C: Eric Markey, Elms

Comments: David Hollowell is probably the best non-SF since I've been doing this that couldn't find his way to the first team. (I can take just one SF but can mix the guards and posts up a bit.) Hollowell has a speed rating of 83 and perimeter of 87. But that ain't enough in the NAC. Hollowell clearly isn't as good as Dale Peterman and while my formula has him better than Larry Denmark is isn't enough to make up for Denmark's A+ free throw rating (which the formula ignores). Not sure if he'll walk away with the hardware but Lawrence Wolinski is the conference player of the year. And it's not even close. Wolinski is better than two senior guards at the guard position. He's currently better than all but two sophomore guards at the guard position. (Surprisingly, he's "only" better than all but three of the freshmen guards; all three are from Castleton so Wolinski is better than the freshmen guards from the other 11 schools.)

SEASON 28 FRESHMEN REDSHIRT – 1st Team
PG: Jack Duggan, Elms
SG: Brian Allen, UMPI
SF: Arthur Boissonneault, Husson
PF: Bradford Vinson, MMA
C: Seth Irvin, Lasell

C: Floyd Graham, UMF

SEASON 30 SOPHOMORES – 1st Team
PG: Jack Duggan, Elms
SG: Brian Allen, UMPI
SF: Richard Boles, Castleton State
PF: Bradford Vinson, MMA
C: Seth Irvin, Lasell

SEASON 30 SOPHOMORES – 2nd Team
PG: Herbert Molinaro, UMF
SG: Kenneth Grider, MMA
SF: Arthur Boissonneault, Husson
PF: Chad Burns, Thomas
C: Floyd Graham, UMF

SEASON 31 JUNIORS – 1st Team
PG: Jack Duggan, Elms
SG: Brian Allen, UMPI
SF: Richard Boles, Castleton State
PF: Bradford Vinson, MMA
C: Seth Irvin, Lasell

SEASON 31 JUNIORS – 2nd Team
PG: Sean Lusk, Lasell
SG: Kenneth Grider, MMA
SF: Arthur Boissonneault, Husson
PF: Floyd Graham, UMF
C: Chad Burns, Thomas

Comments: Seth Irvin doesn't have Wolinski-like dominance. But compared to the other post players in the Junior class, he dominates. There seem to be plenty of good guards in the conference but I'm a bit worried about quality of our post players in this conference. Hopefully I'm dead wrong.

SEASON 29 FRESHMEN REDSHIRT – 1st Team
PG: Richard Jenkins, Elms
SG: Richard Maye, UMPI
SF: Eugene Laubach, Castleton State
PF: [no post player eligible]
C: [no post player eligible]

SEASON 30 FRESHMEN – 1st Team

PF: Clyde Lee, UMPI
C: Charles Hunter, Castleton State

SEASON 30 FRESHMEN – 2nd Team
PG: Donald Capozzi, Elms
SG: Ralph Gray, Thomas
SF: Cedric Miller, Thomas
PF: Derrick Potter, Lasell

PG: Donald Capozzi, Elms
SG: Ralph Gray, Thomas
SF: Cedric Miller, Thomas
PF: Charles Grafenstein, Thomas
C: Joseph Francis, Mount Ida

SEASON 30 FRESHMEN REDSHIRT – 1st Team
PG: Jacob Furstenberg, Husson
SG: James Waltman, Castleton State
SF: Anthony Clark, UMF
PF: James Hively, Thomas
C: Eric Cobb, Johnson State

SEASON 31 FRESHMEN – 1st Team
PG: Darin Dillon, UMPI
SG: Brett Mohr, Castleton State
SF: Anthony Clark, UMF
PF: Eric Cobb, Johnson State
C: James Hively, Thomas

SEASON 31 FRESHMEN – 2nd Team
PG: Glenn Ryan, Castleon State
SG: Allan Palmer, Thomas
SF: James Waltman, Castleton State
PF: Zachary Campbell, Elms
C: Edward Howie, Johnson State

Comments: Normally, you just see the redshirts pop up on the first team the next time around. Interesting that neither of the guards could do that this time around.

SEASON 31 FRESHMEN REDSHIRT – 1st Team
PG: Mark Rowden, MMA
SG: Nelson Keene, Thomas
SF: Alvin Browning, Elms
PF: George Wiesneski, Salem State
C: Brian Anderson, Husson

Comments: Pretty sure I'm cheating here. Nelson Keene is a SF that I moved over the SG spot. (He does have 45 perimeter rating that the formula likes.) And beachedwhale jumped on him before he dropped to me, but Mark Rowden was one of my SF targets. I wouldn't be surprised if he is developed as a SF just like Keene. If my assumption is correct, we don't have any true guards in the redshirt freshman class.
