DDL (Decade Draft League) 34--The 80'sON da clock! Topic

So weird that 80s basketball is considered the best (or at least most entertaining) basketball in the NBA era, and yet it's basically scraps. Those of us at the end of the first round really know what that feels too.

I feel like anybody that I draft from this point on will just make my team worse.

The problem is that only a handful of teams had most of the best players. Only 5 teams got to the NBA Finals in the decade. Five teams took up 20 finals slots. There were a lot of have nots among the 23 or so teams for the first like 8 years of the decade.

Lakers - 8
Rockets - 2
Celtics - 5
76ers - 3
Pistons - 2

So people love the 80s because of the 4 great teams (Lakers, Celtics, 76ers, Pistons) and the various Lakers-Celtics and Lakers-76ers series in the finals, but most of the rest of the league was not very good.

Besides these 5 teams above, here are the teams that got to the conference finals.

Bucks - 3
Bulls - 1
Kings - 1
Mavs - 1
Nuggets - 1
Sonics - 2
Spurs - 2
Suns - 2

So that's 14 slots which means that the 5 teams that got to the finals in the 80s took up 26 of the 40 conference finals slots for the decade.

This is why I placed a premium on the minutes that each of my starters could play. I knew that the bench guys were gonna be weak for everybody.

Let's go guys. The next few guys that pick are going to be picking again right after. Let's build some momentum on the turn...

Eddie Johnson
There's 2 Eddie Johnsons, is this the 6-2 guy or the 6-7 guy?

The 6-2 guy is the SG, the 6-7 guy is the SF

Always forget that. It's the 6'2' SG with the 80 D in in 79-80.

One thing I have noticed is that in the 1980s there are so many guards who don’t rebound at all and it’s such a contrast to now when a lot of guards are good rebounders.

Yes, it's like all the power hitters nowadays at 2B and SS. In the 60s and 70s most of those guys only hit 3 or 4 HRs in a season. Carew once won a batting title with 0 home runs.

Savoy, excellent point about the 80s. Was transformative for the NBA which started marketing its stars. Very deceptive, because talent did not run very deep.

Man, it would be so nice to keep this draft moving, especially at night and on weekends so all the considerate owners wouldn't have to check back as much during the workday. This ain't rocket surgery. If we could get some momentum, you never know, we could maybe even complete the draft by Monday so we wouldn't have to deal with it while at work.
