Finally, the huge changes we've all been asking for:

Changes within the last 90 days...

  • Improved All-Star team selection logic to create better balance by position.
  • Added Sixth Man to the awards listed on the League Leaders.

I'd say this was pretty funny, IF I thought it was a joke.

Those must've been the minor changes seble said the new guy was working on a few pages ago.
9/15/2009 11:22 AM
did anyone complain about allstar selection or ask for a 6th man award? there were a lot more substantive concerns listed in the last 19 pages - this seems purely cosmetic and in no way effects the quality of game play

if you are going to claim that you dont have enough time to deal with our issues at least dont waste what time you do have on cosmetic, insignificant tweaks that no one has asked for - boo

Actually a lot of people have kvetched in the past about all-star team selection not being consistently by position. I doubt anyone would have called it a priority, though.

Many of those kvetchers wanted the All-Star game simmed as well.

now that the minor changes are done maybe (?) they can focus on more significant changes that are actually relevant to game play.

Until then, I, for one, am/will be focusing all my attention on NFL / Fantasy Football.. coming back to the nba sim discussion is just bad for one's blood pressure.

As garyman mentioned, those changes released yesterday were done by Casey. We're letting him get his feet wet in the NBA game with some smaller stuff before we tackle the bigger issues. So my lack of time was not a factor in these changes.

Maybe I'm incredibly incorrect, stupid, etc, but am I the only guy that thinks that those are INCREDIBLY SIMPLE changes to this game, especially for someone that is a programmer and/or knows what he's doing? Those 2 "improvements" seem like hour if not a 1 day fix, I just don't see how something like this can take days/weeks.
9/15/2009 3:09 PM
Trevor, spend your entire day working on the same freakin' Excel worksheet, and you'll have a little bit of sympathy for the new guy.
9/15/2009 4:27 PM
A. It doesn't take me an entire day to do what I have to do for my website. One college football ranker on Massey Ratings reported on his website (Born, the Born Power Index, also the BPI....how ironic) that it takes 17 hours a weekend for him to generate his rankings/update his website...that's funny to me because there is no way that that guy is spending that much time, no matter what calculations he's making. Either A. he's lying because he doesn't want to take on more projects as people are asking him to do or B. he's severely inept with a computer and said programs/functions.

B. I don't use Excel in making my rankings/stat analyses/games/etc. its a combination of works database and Access 03.

C. I don't get paid for what I do and I put out a reasonably efficient and timely updated website.

and

D. I set myself up for success by making templates for many of my projects for later use...see, I don't overcomplicate the process to begin with, I, unlike some people, are simple AND efficient.

For actual paid computer programmers to turn out these 2 minor, miniscule changes over the course of many days/weeks/months seems lazy/ridiculous to me and I will think that I or a suitable programmer could do set tasks quicker and more efficient until I see/do/try otherwise. I won't ever give those guys the benefit of the doubt because when you really think about it, how hard can said changes be, really? If I saw or was told about the step by step process that went on to bust out those 2 changes, perhaps I'd be more understanding.

Jer, I realize now that I misread your post, but the aforementioned material still applies.

You know what, let's look further into these shall we, to see/project the difficulty of said changes. Let's assume that the limits/categorization are already in place for the starters (which it seems to be) to output 2 guards, 2 forwards and a center. Prior to this change, the bench was made up of the next 7 highest vote totalling guys, thus no real limits or anything. How hard is it really to apply a 3G, 3F, 1C (or a 3-2-2 or 2-3-2 configuration) to the RESERVES when you already have said system in place for the STARTERS? I guess better yet, I'd like to know how long a process like this took/takes.

  • Added Sixth Man to the awards listed on the League Leaders.
Again, how hard is it to add a Sixth Man category? You just put some kind of filter on your 6th man category that keeps out the 5 starters on every team, then order that 6th man category by the MVP "vote" system that you already have in place. To a guy that knows only a little programming, these two changes seem extremely easy for the guys that know what they're doing...I think its fair to have these thoughts that I'm having and its fair to wonder.

I'd say this was pretty funny, IF I thought it was a joke.

Nobody ever said these changes took weeks or months. Casey is as busy as the rest of us on various things, so he's been working on them when he can. Man, we'd have to cure cancer to get a positive comment in here.

That or fix something that we actually care about.

Those changes/updates do NOTHING for the problems with the game, period, so exactly why do you and Casey deserve praise for said changes?

And if it didn't take weeks or months, then how long did it take to make these changes...put a "man hours" number on it so people UNDERSTAND how long it takes you guys to do what you do, because like I said, from my perspective, your work doesn't/shouldn't take that long. People here would be a lot happier with full disclosure, and at this point, what do you really have to lose?
