Who is Pat Shurmur?
1/13/2011 12:47 PM
Because it wasn't a question.  Much like the post I'm responding to now.

He's related to Fritz Shurmur who was Holmgren's D-Coordinator at some point.  That's why he's a candidate to coach the Browns.

Does he have a kid named Heart?
1/13/2011 1:14 PM
I'm sure he doesn't.   He's not a movie/rock star who'll name his kid Apple, Moon, Blanket or whatever.

Do you tweet?
1/13/2011 1:24 PM
No.  I don't even text.

Do you have a rotary phone in your house?

No.  But I've refused to get a mobile phone that does anything but accept/send calls.

How many wins is a good NFL coach worth in a 16 game season? Would you overpay for that great who could be the difference between playoffs or drafting 16th?

That's tough to say.   The NFL is all about schemes for the right personnel.  So, if a coach doesn't have the right players, it really doesn't matter how smart he is.  It's probably more about not losing than winning.  A bad coach can cost a team wins by not putting his players in the right position to win.   Childress is a good example.   So is Phillips.  I certainly don't think Frazier or Garrett are "3 wins per season" better than those guys but the numbers say they are.   I think it's because Childress and Phillips just couldn't figure out how to get the players to do what they needed them to do.

The best comment I heard about Wade Phillips as coach of the Cowboys was the he "sports the air of a man who has missed his bus, and doesn't know when the next one is coming".

Do you agree?
1/13/2011 3:53 PM
That seems pretty accurate.   I always thought of him as a nice guy who just didn't seem prepared when he needed to be prepared.   I doubt it was because he didn't work hard.   I just think he lacked the ability to exude confidence even though it's something that's required to lead.

To further the point, I'm sure you've seen the old guy order the "usual" at his favorite eatery.  But, when the waitress says "I'm sorry.  We don't have sharp cheddar today.  Would mild cheddar be OK?", the old dude can't make a decision.   He just wasn't prepared for a question.

The Wade Phillips discussion is touching on some thoughts about elite QBs that Trent Dilfer expressed to Bill Simmons recently in a podcast.  Did you hear any of that?

It has to do with the top QBs being the Alpha Male among Alpha Males.  Does that make sense to you?

Does Trent Dilfer's opinion carry more or less weight when he says he regrets that he didn't reach his potential and seems to be disappointed in his own career?

Would you believe the ability to inspire and lead teammates is the primary difference between Brady, Montana, Grbac, and Couch?

Would you believe the ability to intake alcohol is the primary difference in Ryan Leaf, Matt Lienhart, and Jamarcus Russell?
