Thomas Recruits -- Season 33 (Season 2 of potential)

Richard Dimick (SG)
-- The best recruit in Thomas' class this season. Not really saying much since the other guy is a SF and I swear it is impossible to find a good SF anymore. Or rather, a good SF is not going to look good compared to a good guard or post player. Hoping Dimick can become a good player at Thomas. He should develop into a top notch athlete and one heck of a good defender. I'm hoping that he will also be a good guard. Might not be able to do that. Dimick has high potential in perimeter shooting but only average potential in ball handling and passing. The passing rating is really a lot lower than what I would want in a recruit. I really wish I could switch the perimeter and passing rating around. Although if Dimick can hold onto the ball he should be a pretty special player. Been a while since I had a guy like this on my roster. In fact, I'm not sure I ever have.

Dimick does have a 2.1 HS GPA which might be a bit of a challenge. Pre-potential that would have been a deal-breaker. Post-potential I'm thinking it doesn't matter as much

FT Shooting 64.5% Gene Jones (SG) -- A SG but I'm going to make Jones a SF. I'd be lying to say I'm excited about Jones. I'd also be lying if I didn't say I was relieved to have signed somebody that was at least this good. I've been trying to get a good SF for my D3 Phelan team for three seasons now and have failed pretty miserably at it. Compared to those guys, Jones is quite the gem. That doesn't mean he's good though. Jones real problem is that he is quite slow. I'm hoping he's on the high end of average but that's both unlikely as well as not enough. He does have good athleticism and defense and I'm hoping he'll be an asset on the that side of the court. I'm not sure those are going to offset the lack of speed but I'm hopeful. On the offensive end I'm not really expecting much. Just hoping that he doesn't cause too much trouble. He does have decent ball handling and passing so I'm hopeful that while it's unlikely he'll be a scorer I'm crossing my fingers that he'll be able to run the offense well enough to set others up. All of this sounds like I'm pretty negative about Jones. That really isn't the case; I could be dead wrong but if I had to guess he's going to be a lot better than a bunch of the other small forwards in D3.Athleticism 38 (high)

FT Shooting 69.8% (low) OverallI feel good about this class. Don't think I have a star but I got a small forward who I believe I can trust which is more than I can say for my three seasons of trying to get a SF over in Phelan. Not thrilled with Dimick but he looks like he will contribute at a minimum.

I'd be feeling a bit better about Thomas right now if they weren't a zone team. I just can't convince myself to bite the bullet and switch over to a man defense. But right not it really looks like Thomas is going to have a very good defensive team in a couple of seasons and running the zone I'm just not sure how effective it will be.

Annual Rankings Time. Reminder that this is the old formula and hasn't been changed for potential. After what I've seen, that's a huge problem going forward with this. The junior and senior classes are still "clean". But the forumula weights work ethic quite a bit and makes the assumption that with a good work ethic a player will continue to grow. Since players seem to almost all be hitting caps I'm not sure how this will work for the potential players.

Comments: Richard Jenkins and Clyde Lee are way better than their competitors. Same is sort of true at the SF spot. Cedric Miller is barely better than Eugene Laubach. But both are way better than the next best SF.

Comments: Eric Cobb went from 1st team as a junior to off the list as a senior. First time I can remember that happening this late in a player's career.

Comments: Lots of changes here as the rankings from last year didn't know how potential will play themselves out. If he hasn't maxed out, John Overcash really appears to be the star of the Sophomore class.

SEASON 32 FRESHMEN REDSHIRT – 1st Team
PG: Johnathan Meeks, Lasell
SG: Mark Gibbs, MMA
SF: Grady Fullerton, UMPI
PF: Gary Angle, UMF
C: John Eaddy, Thomas

SG: Richard Dimick, Thomas
SF: Steven Gould, Castleton State
PF: Micheal Steffan, Elms

Comments: Mark Gibbs is way better than any of the freshmen. If MMA had a frontcourt to match the Overcash-Gibbs backcourt, they would be scary good. Heck, they might be scary good as is.

Great work, as always. I'm really interested in seeing how these guys develop with potential. For what its worth, Hafenstein will not end up being all that great. Myrie on the other hand will; his pe started at 61 with high potential..he will be my next big scorer.

You're right about the Overcash/Gibbs backcourt...they are going to be a force.

I'm a bit surprised to see Maye still on the 1st team. I remember when I brought him in, his cores were a bit low but he had great work ethic. He didn't quite turn out as well as I had hoped in bh/pe/pa. But, his ath/speed/def are more than making up for that I suppose.

Its also going to be interesting to see how my two soph C end up. Greene will definitely pass Forte by the end of the season, but once Greene hits his caps, Forte can pass him.

Bates off to a 4-0 start in Allen. I've took over a struggling school which was 0-54 the 2 years before i got there 1-26 my first year with little talent went to 10 wins in season 2 of rebuild. Season 3 off to a good start great pg play by Avina, George Day has also played well. Teeple is the star of the unit over 15ppg.

Who is this interloper?

#6. Salem St - Has had a great NC season,,, I however look for the grim reality of the NAC to set in on Salem St soon. The 33RPI (I believe) is inflated as they have played several good (NAC Caliber) teams,,, they just haven't beat most of them. The lack of sr's and only 2-3 jr's will have to take it toll as the season rolls on and they face good teams every single night. I hope they surprise me but this game is usually more about the numbers than the luck. and for another season or two... the numbers don't add up to alot of conference wins for Witch-Country.

Even I expected to get thrown around like a whore at a whore house.. I knew it... This year should be different, would like to see where i rank this year... Im a much better team with much of my focus on IQ this year.

P.S.

Milez... I just don't see the back-court talent and outside shooting to handle the NAC's night-in-night-out drubbing,,, but your right,,, they are a much better team than in the past.

congrats on making a door-mat a very solid bunch.

P.P.S.

And if you get too good I'll hafta come back an kick your butt...MUHAHAHA!

You're wrong, my team overall is going to do very well in the NAC this year. Especially this year, with all the new coaches and younger players these other teams have... I will easily win more than 1 damn game. I have lots of confidence in this squad for the next 3 seasons.

Place holder. Predict 7-3 record for Thomas in the non-conference. (Hopefully egg does not end up on my face.)
4/14/2009 10:25 PM
We'll be better than last season. How's that for going out on a limb. Speaking of going out, this really is my swan song.
4/14/2009 10:41 PM
Apparently, we are much better than last season. Who knew?
