Great job, CB...

Goes to show that even after a great season at UMBC, Maryland is still the top school in the state...Good luck in the first game of the season...Don't pummel me too bad this go round

interesting read CB. I looked at all those kids, figured you'd be in on the #1 C, so didn't even bother. I really wanted that PF, but you (or I guess Desendo) really wanted him as well and went hard early on, which I guess helped out, b/c I cut all ties after the first cycle. Like the SG as well, but I had my eyes set on the SG in long island off the start. Figured I didn't really want to battle again with you this season, especially since we dropped in prestige and you had more reward money.

Loved that SF in West Virginia, but I assumed UNC would go after him, and knew that was a battle I couldn't win. Perhaps we could have taken on Duke, but we were already spread out a bit, so there was no shot at retracking and going after him. Now I'll just hope for (2) top notch SF in the area next year so neither of us have to fight for either, though if I land the second SG this year, I may just go towards a SG-PF combo in the 3 hole for a couple of seasons until I can regroup my class sizes and have more ammo to go after more top end kids. This was a tough season in the north east w/ so many high prestige schools having so many openings, really had to mind my P&Qs this year. Great class you've brough in, not looking forward to facing them in a few years we may have to go -5 to protect the post against those kids :)

good luck this season.

I did tell him to go after Brent Grady, too. I guess I picked out all of the targets, but I it up to Charlie to handle the strategy of actually bringing everyone in. I'm really happy with the class, and I'm looking forward to seeing them all progress.

Hey coach, you asked me to give you my thoughts on how everyone looked after the offseason and I think I've seen enough to do that. I only jotted down things that stood out to me...

Charles bane:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside

Scott blakey:
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
speed: limited upside

James bourget:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[that's too bad, I wish he hadn't topped out on athleticism and perimeter, in particular. Some wiggle room in rebounding would've been nice, too.]

Adam Gill:
athleticism: big upside
ball handling: limited upside
durability: big upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
shot blocking: big upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside

brent Grady:
athleticism: big upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: big upside
low post moves: big upside
rebounding: big upside
shot blocking: big upside
stamina: big upside

brian Hill:
athleticism: big upside
ball handling: big upside
defensive fundamentals: big upside
durability: big upside
passing: big upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
stamina: big upside

Michael Holcomb:
athleticism: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[so I can still help him in speed, stamina, and ballhandling. Good stuff.]

Jonathan Knipp:
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[meaning we can help speed, athleticism, stamina, shot blocking, and passing...all of which have a good base from which to work, already. Too bad about FT shooting, though.]

James Marshall:
ball handling: limited upside
durability: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[speed, athleticism, stamina, defense, and now low post will be the focus for Marshall this season.]

Terry McClure:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[McClure will be...graduating with honors.]

Harrison Parsons:
athleticism: big upside
defensive fundamentals: big upside
durability: big upside
passing: big upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: big upside

Matthew Slick:
athleticism: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[looks like perimeter and ballhandling for Slick, this year...we'll see how that works out.]

Anyway, maybe some guidelines for practice time? If I notice anything else, I'll let you know.

- Nicholas
------------

We lost the first exhibition pretty badly, so I took us down from uptempo to normal tempo.

We get ahead early and stay ahead against an in-state rival. McClure seems to be thriving in his new role. The jury is still out on Marshall, but Blakey is playing well as a backup. We did go the full 11 deep and I think we're better off for it.

The Marshall experiment continues. He's not scoring but it doesn't seem like he's hurting us on defense, by any means, and he's getting a good assist to turnover ratio.

We had a healthy lead on them (14 at the half) and they clawed back in the last few minutes to force overtime, where we won, but not by much. I had adjusted some distributions a little, but I'm going to bump McClure and Slick back down a touch.

That has to be a career game for Knipp. We'll have to pull back the distribution for Blakey, though.
