Round 1 Sound Off, 2020 Topic

Had my 6th schwarze of the tournament in the pm game. That ties my all-time high set in 2017.

I'm so old I can remember when I didn't used to suck at this game.

You should get bonus points for your roster strategies write up... hysterical every year.

Thanks. Maybe I should expend the same effort assembling my teams.

After 98 games, my variable cap team was 3 wins back of being the best team in the entire theme, tied for the lead in our division and 7 games up on the next closest WC team. They're now 17 back of the top team in the theme and out of a playoff spot. Some things will never change.

The correlation between Pre-Rank and the current standings is ~.74 which is in line with the past two years. There's one more optimization I'm going to make next year (i.e. make old tournament results count for less), but I don't think there's much more I can reasonably do to improve it at this point. Pretty satisfied with where it's at.

Also, I am rooting for schwarze. Being the commissioner for this tournament makes it a lot harder to win because you have less time to make your teams. He ran this tournament for years and came close a few times — he's pretty indisputably a top tier owner in my eyes.

Also can someone explain to me how this happened? Which one of these things is not like the others? I am still angry about it, lol, because if you take my average win % from the other 5 sets of 162 games I'd be in 1st

ozomatli Wins Rank
1st 162 Games 100 4
2nd 162 Games 71 81
3rd 162 Games 95 8
4th 162 Games 97 7
5th 162 Games 98 3
6th 162 Games 41 11

an example that will be cited for years to tell people not to panic over a rough stretch of games

I think you need to drop the worst 162-game record from everybody before comparing, if you want an apples-to-apples comparison.

No explanation for the anomaly as I really wasn't following your teams that closely (we're not in any of the same leagues).

Have you gone back and examined the game results? Did you lose a lot of 1-run games? The schedule isn't necessarily equally balanced throughout the 162 game season... maybe you played a bunch of the top teams during that stretch (including inter-league games).

Regarding pre-season ranking, I still think you put too much weight on the "last-year-to-this-year" grade. I know when I was doing the rankings, I pretty much made the tournament results almost 100% of the ranking score (assuming you played the past 5 tournament), weighting the most recent tournaments way more, to the point where older tournaments had very little impact. If I want to be ranked higher in next year's tournament, I guess I should play in a bunch of open leagues to get my results to look better and definitely stop playing in those "screw-your-neighbor" type leagues.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. But remember that I am a regular season player and typically underachieve in the playoffs. Last year, I had the most combined Round1 + Round2 regular season wins. But I got only 18 "bonus" points in the round 1 playoffs and 12 "bonus" points in the round 2 playoffs, including 4 points from my 104-win team (losing to some mediocre 84-win team). For comparison purposes, brianjw combined for 73 "bonus" points (despite having one fewer playoff team than I had, 8 vs 7).

Good point. If I remove the worst 162 game set for everyone and instead apply the average from the other first four 162 game sets to their total, plus their results so far in the final set, here would be the current standings:

Pretty sure I have the largest delta in that group, sadly.

I'm sure you do. I had a really poor start to the tournament. I was doing some analysis. My 5-13 record on day one was the worst single day I had this entire tournament, by 3 games. I like to look at day-by-day record instead of session-by-session, to eliminate some of the variance. Not including today, here was my breakdown. Clearly, a "normal" distribution around 10.5 wins.. With that poor start (I also had two of the 8-win days that first week), it took about a week to get above .500 for good. I know a week isn't that long, but boy it sure feels like an eternity, especially when I was ranked below tridentric at one point.

Is there some easy way you track this, or are you inputting data as the season progresses?
