Red Dragons scorch Hornets and march to Final Four
In West Region action, SUNY-Oneonta, the 4th-seed in the region used an incredible first half barrage to blow out top-seeded Lynchburg and move onto the Final Four for the second time in three seasons. The Red Dragons shot 58% from the field in the first half incuding 67% from 3-point range. Of their 20 made field goals in the opening half, twelve of those were from long distance as they raced to a 63-37 halftime lead.
Lynchburg responded and played better in the second half, holding SUNY-Oneonta to only eight FG's and 44% shooting. But, the 26-point halftime deficit proved too difficult to overcome.
Paul Sweeney an Daniel Johnson each poured in 23 points and reserve Robert Carr chipped in 19 points off the bench to pace the Red Dragon effort. Carr made all five of his three-point attempts while Sweeney nailed six of nine shots behind the arc.
Lynchburg, the champions from the ODAC conference, was led by All-American small forward James Atkinson who scored 33 points, including 19 in the second half, and pulled down seven boards in his final collegiate contest.
No other Hornet player hit double digits. Atkinson shot 50% from the floor, hitting ten of the twenty shots he attempted. His Lynchburg teammates also hit ten shots but needed 34 attempts. Aside from Atkinson, the other Hornets shot 29% for the game.
SUNY-Oneonta moves on to face Northland, champions of the South Region after a 79-75 win over Pittsburgh, Greensburg. Lynchburg finishes their campaign at 27-6

ODAC Season 28 Predictions

East

1. Eastern Mennonite (366) - Great guard play headlines a strong group that also has experienced big men. Depth may be a concern, but slow pace of play will keep their top players in the game. Final four contender.

2. Guilford (361) - Loaded with quality big men, should dominate the boards. Guards are solid, but no standouts other than Boles who should be an All-Conference selection. Elite eight contender who could go higher with the right matchups.

3. Lynchburg (341) - 3rd team preseason All-American Paul Dever headlines this group that has good balance, but lacks strength and depth in its guards. Young team will likely struggle early, but finish strong. Sweet 16 hopeful with aspirations of going deeper. Guard play will determine how far this team goes.

4. Emory & Henry (335) - Ayotte, Crose, and Cheek will keep this team in every game, but E&H lacks depth. Young team that should do well in close games and will be dangerous as its youth matures. Will be hurt by random schedule that will probably provide poor SOS. Good enough to make NT, but schedule will limit them. 1st round NT hopeful.

5. Bridgewater (318) - Dangerous team that is maturing. May still be one year away from making its big push to the NT. Interesting setup with lack of SF and only one C will cause matchup problems (the question is who...Bridgewater or their opponent). Strong non-conference showing in away games will likely determine if this team is a contender or a pretender. Just misses postseason this year, but will make it next year.

6. Hampden-Sydney (317) - Another PF strong team that has fairly solid depth. Weak schedule could hurt, but will certainly make up for it in conference play. Pretty good team in a very tough division will pull off a couple of surprises this year, but is not yet ready for the postseason.

West

1. Washington & Lee (345) - Strong PGs, strong Cs has been a recipe for success at W&L and this year sets up to be a good year. Strong rebounding from SF to C, but won't get any help from the guards. Free throw shooting will be an achilles heel and may prevent this team from excelling. Sweet 16 or better.

2. Virginia Wesleyan (340) - Overall team rating does not do this team justice and they will take some teams by surprise who overlook them. 4 seniors will take this team into the postseason with strong rebounding at every position. Daniel Shoemaker will gets a lot of points late in games with defensive rebounding and getting fouled. PG Ira Dawson is not a strong ballhandler which may hurt. Sweet 16 or better.

3.Washington & Jefferson (333) - SF Wayne Choate and SG Ernest Blythe will carry this team as far as they can. Suspect low post play with young centers and poor speed and athleticism at PF may limit them. Unable to make non-conference schedule this year will keep this team from having a quality SOS. Could make PI with a strong showing, but is NT 1st round hopeful.

4.(tie) Roanoke (320) - Very poor rebounding team will struggle in conference play against much stronger teams. Actually inherited a good schedule from the sim. Team is built for its offense and defense with good team speed which it will to stay in games. Poor FT shooting will also hold this team back. PI hopeful with a strong non-conference showing.

4.(tie) Bethany (320) - Senior-laden team may be ready to make another push for the postseason. Nolan Robbins and Michael Moroney will lead the Bison that has good depth to go with its experience. Ballhandling and passing are below average. Robbins has potential to be POY if Bethany can finish near the top of the West. Non-conference schedule lacks road games and high quality opponents and will limit the Bison's upside. PI hopeful, but likely to miss postseason.

6. Randolph-Macon (284) - Ugh. Very young team that lacks quality throughout. Stands a good chance to lose every game, but being a sim, will probably shock someone or take out another sim. This anchor will drag the ODAC down from the top conference RPIs. 5 win season would be a major success.

COY: hoosierchap

POY: Daniel Shoemaker, Virginia Wesleyan

CT: Eastern Mennonite

NT: Eastern Mennonite, Guilford, Washington & Lee, Lynchburg, Virginia Wesleyan

PI: Emory & Henry, Washington & Jefferson

E&H and W&J will likely be hurt by not being able to schedule and will need a strong conference showing to make the postseason.

Lynchburg Season 28 Recruiting

James "Granola" Jackson - SG (441), Dolores HS, Dolores, CO; 6'1" 181 lbs

The great grandson of the inventor of granola, Jackson is expected to contribute immediately. He is a good shooter and should light it up from deep. He needs to work on protecting the ball. Living up to his name, "Granola" has a tendency to hit the bong hard which has affected his durability.

Emilio "El Indio" Fernandez - C (432), Josefita Pastrana HS, Aguas Buenas, PR; 6'6" 207 lbs

Emilio was named after his mother's favorite actor and has his dashing good looks that he relied throughout HS to get the women. He never really had to work hard at it and his laziness shows in his lack of speed and athleticism. He did learn the fundamentals though....with the ladies.

Matthew "Brewmaster" Brewer - SF (470), Friends Select HS, Philadelphia, PA; 6'5" 196 lbs

Brewer and roommate Jackson like to party hard, but we don't know how he got that nickname. Brewer looks to be a future All-Conference selection in the very near future and is taking a redshirt this year to get better so he can dominate for 4 years. This versatile athlete could be a better shooting guard than Jackson and could even slide over to the PF position. Watch out ODAC when the brewmaster comes to town!

Timothy "Beefcake" Adkins - PF (453), Patchogue-Medford HS, Medford, NY; 6'5" 222 lbs

Not the brightest star in the sky, Adkins went from a lanky PG his sophomore year to a barrel-chested freight train that was unstoppable on the court. He spent more time at GNC than on his SAT however and that translated to his stock falling from the DII ranks. Lynchburg will benefit from his solid work ethic and skill that should turn him into a star by the end of his college career if he can pass his courses (such as health, nutrition, game theory, and chemistry). He thought we said basket-weaving instead of basketball, but oddly enough that is expected to be his major (we hope).

Pretty solid group all-in-all as the coaches scoured the nation for some better FT shooters to get back to the basics that produced a final four team.
