After this current series is over, we start a run of 9 straight divisional games. The first 6 of them are against the 2 teams above me in the standings who each beat me 3 out of 4 the first time we played.

This is the best team in my league, and in my division. I don't get it. Their lineup is not real impressive to me. How the heck is Guzman doing what he's doing? His actual OPS was .693.

All 4 dead ball starters giving up a total of just 4 HRs now after 48 games.

Is this the key here, pick all deadball pitchers and they perform as if they are still pitching in their era?

He does have strong fielding at 2B, SS and CF, but so do I. I can accept that his home park and pitching and fielding is keeping his opponent's offenses down, but anybody have any explanations why he is hitting like this in the Astrodome?

You can’t look at raw numbers, one of the things I’ve mentioned a few times. Gotta look at normalization and check performance history. Alomar, Carey, Coleman, Marte, J-Ram are all favorites on OL rosters. Marte is probably they most used OL player in the game.

Deadballers aren’t “the secret sauce” to winning, but they’re a very strong strategy and the more popular one at the moment. Pros: give up very few HR, Cons: Fielders will make more errors behind you. Tests have shown that you deadballers and modern pitchers who give up more HR but allow fewer errors are pretty even in value. Just depends on how your team is crafted. My team with all modern day starters (3 man rotation of 2011 Halladay, Haren and 2022 Alcantara) is the best in the league at 28-16. I have all A+ range behind them and play in a hitters park to let my offense excel and my defense will take hits away from opponents

So I guess very few people use 20s and 30s pitchers. haven't see anybody using Lefty Grove yet, who is a top 5 pitcher all time.

The difference in Diamond Mind is that the player stats are normalized BEFORE they get entered into the site. They don't have individual seasons for the old timers, it's just one version of each player based on their best 5 consecutive seasons normalized. So for instance, Cochrane will have a batting average of like .285, while a deadball pitcher like Cicotte has an ERA of 2.94 and is shown as allowing 17 HR in 202 innings, as the innings pitched are also normalized to be more in line with a normal latter day season.

See I don’t like that at all. But if you enjoy it that’s great.

I year 20’s- 30’s pitchers, but you just gotta pick carefully. Not every .210 oav is the same, just like not every .300 BA is the same. Gotta look at the years they did it. I like seeing the actual stats, and then I can look up normalized numbers in the draft center to draft my team.

We win again!

We got off to an 8-1 lead with Ruffing pitching brilliantly, but Ol' Red tired in the bottom of the 7th and gave up 4 runs which turned a great outing into a subpar outing, 5 runs allowed in 6 innings pitched. The inning started with 3 straight singles, and then a triple, before Weaver had Henderson ready to replace Red on the mound. In any case, the final was 8-5 for the Good Guys.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40550183&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

Greenberg belted a 2 run HR in the top of the first and we added a stick in the second on a solo shot from Cochrane. The Thespians got a run back in the 4th on an RBI groundout by Tellez. We then scored 2 in the 5th, and 2 more in the 6th against Blackley as Bouton had been removed from the game for a pinch hitter. In the 5th it was another 2 run blast from Greenberg, and then in the 6th a 2 run single from Boudreau. We added one in the 7th on an RBI single from Speaker to lead 8-1.

At this point Ruffing was working on a 2 hitter, but they jumped on him in the 7th as described above. Henderson came in to get out of it and then had a 1-2-3 8th inning to settle things back down. Alcala came in for the 9th walked Kennedy, but then retired 3 straight pinch hitters to end the game with his third save. We had 16 hits including 3 from Helms and 3 from Leach.

THREE STARS
1. Hank Greenberg - 2 two run HRs for 4 RBI
2. Lou Boudreau - 3 for 5, run, double, 2 RBI
3. Jim Henderson - hold with 2 scoreless innings in the 7th and 8th.

Okay, series finale with the Thespians overnight as we look to sweep them again. 2014 Max Scherzer makes his debut for us while they go with 1891 Billy Rhines (7-9, 4.18). We are 29-25 now, and with Target Best on a 3 game losing streak, we are within 6 games of second place and the wild card spot. We have won 8 of our last 11 games and are tied for the third best record in the AL, but the top 2 are both in our division :-(

Team OPS now at .762 with team ERA at 4.71. We've made 35 errors, with 11 of them from Leach at 3B.

Lefty Grove would be great in a progressive league. Other individual pitcher seasons are better values than Lefty's individual seasons in an OL.
12/26/2022 7:11 PM
We just completed the sweep of the Thespians, winning this one 7-4 in 10 innings. Trailing 1 to 0 we hit for him in the the 6th. Henderson then came in and gave up 3 runs in 1.1 innings. Perez, Fetter and Alcala held them scoreless the rest of the way. The win went to Fetters with Alcala garnering the save.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40552376&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

They got one on a Tellez SF in the first. We put up a 4 spot in the top of the 6th on RBIs from Leach, Helms, and 2 from Cullenbine. Reynolds hit a 2 run HR in the bottom of the 6th as the Thespians closes to 4-3. They then tied it in the 7th on a SF from Joey Gallo. It them stayed at 4-4 through the end of the 9th. In the 10th with 2 outs and bases loaded we got one on an error by Reynolds, and then Cullenbine followed with a 2 run single to make it 7-4. Alcala now came on for the bottom of the 10th. He gave up a one out single, but then retired Reynolds and future General Hospital star Johnny Berardino to end the game.

THREE STARS
1. Roy Cullenbine - 4 hits, 4 RBI
2. Mike Fetters, retired all 6 batters he faced in the 8th and 9th and got the win.
3. Max Scherzer - 5 innings allowing one run.
12/27/2022 1:40 AM
We are 30-25 now, and gained a game on the first place team, 11 games out, and still 6 games out of second place. Now we play the first place team, Balking To New Orleans, in a 3 game series at our place. After that we go to the second place team, Target Best, for 3 games at their place.

Game 1 tomorrow afternoon Balking is throwing 1909 Addie Joss (7-1, 2.84). We are going with Frank Corridon (2-2, 3.43). Their catcher is Terry Kennedy, a C- thrower.

Switch hitters don’t always get a boost, in fact they never get a boost. They just don’t get a penalty. It’s also a very small sample size. Players will perform great feats in a short amount of time, give it time and the results will fall back to the mean most of the time. Sford is one of the best owners on this sim - I’d take notes on how he builds teams.
In determining if the batter gets a hit l vs r or r vs l is built in to the algo for each batter isn't it? Thus a switch hitter always gets the "bonus". Hence why people have some many switch hitters and they usually outperform, at least that's my sense. Especially the ones who outperformed league average in real life.

SFord is my league, his lineup is ALL switch hitters :)

The switch hitters already have their "boost" built into their real life stats. They SHOULD NOT get any platoon advantage when they face the opposite side. But a regular righty hitter SHOULD get a boost against lefties, and a drop against righties, because his rate stats can change a lot if you only let him play against lefties. Sounds like the sim needs to work this out if many of the best owners are usually mainly switch hitters. If true it really dampens my enthusiasm to play more seasons.

So far, so good, as we just beat Balking To New Orleans 3-2. They led 2-0, but we rallied for 3 in the 8th and then closed them out in the 9th. They gave us the game on back to back dropped fly balls with 2 outs by Coleman and Carey. Joss went all the way and took the hard luck loss, Castillo got the win with a save from Fetters, after a great outing by Corridon.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40554706&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

They got an unearned run in the third to lead 1-0. Greenberg flubbed a groundball and Kennedy reached, followed by Coleman grounding into a force play at 2B. Vince then stole second and third, and came home on a groundout Alomar. It then stayed 1-0 through 6 full innings.

Top 7 now, and Balking puts up a second run. Coleman singled, stole second and third again, and scored on a SF when he was able to avoid Cochrane's tag on a great throw from Speaker in center field. They led 2-0. Bottom 8 now, and here is how it went:

8
Bloomfield Rebels
H.Agganis enters the game as a pinch-hitter for D.Castillo.
H.Agganis grounds out to 2B.
T.Speaker hits a line drive double to LCF.
L.Boudreau grounds out to SS.
R.Cullenbine hits a flyball single to CF. T.Speaker scores.
V.Coleman drops a deep flyball and H.Greenberg reaches on a 2-base error.
M.Carey has a flyball ricochet off his glove and B.Murcer reaches on a 2-base error. R.Cullenbine scores. H.Greenberg scores.
M.Cochrane is issued the free pass.
T.Leach grounds out to 2B.

Fetters comes ion for the 9th, gets the first 2 batters, but then walks Carey. Roberto Alomar is up, and he hits a lazy flyball to RF that Cullenbine grabs to end the game.

By the way, I don't recall seeing any wild pitches or passed balls in my box scores. I assume they occur. They occur fairly often in Diamond Mind, where every pitcher has a WP rating and ever catcher has a PB rating. Both are based on how many WP or PB they would have for every 1,000 PA with runners on base.

THREE STARS
1. Frank Corridon - 7 innings, 2 runs, one earned.
2. Roy Cullenbine - 2 for 4, run, RBI.
3. Mike Fetters - scoreless 9th inning for the save.

You can check passed balls with category fielding and split extended (you currently have zero). As long as you use a legit catcher, there will rarely be a passed ball.
12/27/2022 2:27 PM
Game 2 of this series this evening, Balking is pitching 1909 Cy Morgan (5-2, 3.39). We're throwing Roy Mitchell (6-2, 3.47). Schofield (97) will give Helms (95) a rest at 2B.

That's dumb. The catchers should be set to allow passed balls based on their real life rate adjusted for league averages. If he allowed 80% of what an average catcher did, then he should be set to allow 80% of whatever the league average is for the era that the sim is using to run the games.
