ODAC Conference Tournament 1st Round Recap

Hampden-Sydney def. Randolph-Macon - 75-59

Big 3 forwards power Tigers to quarterfinals

Hampden-Sydney rode its power forwards to victory in round 1 as John Dobbs lead all scorers with 22 points and added 11 rebounds. He was aided by fellow low post players Robert Harris, 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Carls, 11 points and 8 rebounds, but it was the point guard who got this team going late in the first half.

In the early going, Dobbs provided all of the offense for the Tigers, but they found themselves down 13-7. Harris then took over the offensive reins scoring all 6 of the Tiger points over the next stretch, but again the Tigers found themselves down 21-13. Finally, little Roger Coleman got into the act scoring 8 of the next 10 Tiger points pulling them even late in the half. Coleman finished with 12 points. The second half saw the Tiger defensive smother the Yellow Jackets and they pulled away behind the big 3 for an easy win. The Tigers dominated the boards 46-24 and held the Yellow Jackets to 36.2% from the field. Sophomore Cory Szczepanski came off the bench to lead Randolph-Macon with 13 points.

Bethany def. Bridgewater - 61-60

Bison survive Eagle scare; FTs prove the difference

Bethany played good defense and hit timely free throws down the stretch to knock off upstart #6 seed Bridgewater 61-60, but the story was missed opportunities by the Eagles from the line. Bridgewater only managed 19-35 for 54.3% from the charity stripe including missing back to back front ends of a one and one in the second half. Nolan Robbins lead the Bison with 17 points and got help from Sean Murphy with 16 points and Michael Moroney with 10 points.

The Eagles got off to a blistering start leading by 11 points early in the game, but Bethany whittled the deficit down to one multiple times including the end of the first half. The Bison quickly took the lead at the start of the second half and would never relinquish it in holding Bridgewater to just 35.2 FG%. Despite their bad day shooting, the Eagles found themselves in the game late. With 1:30 to go, Leroy Newton put Bridgewater on his back scoring 8 of his 11 points down the stretch to cut the lead to 3 with 5 seconds , but a Moroney foul of James Ames with no time kept the Eagles from getting a potential game-tying shot off and sealed it for the Bison.

Eastern Mennonite def. Roanoke - 80-48

Royals dominate Maroons despite foul shooting

Eastern Mennonite leaned heavily on its quad-centers to trounce Roanoke and advance to the quarterfinals. Joe Hubbard lead all scorers with 16 points, Harold Williams added 13 points, Ted Clarke contributed 11 points, and Porter Williams lead the team with 12 rebounds and added 6 points for the Royals. The score could have been much worse as Mennonite struggled to finish 47.2% from the line. They dominated pretty much all aspects of the game holding a 58-28 rebounds edge, including 26 offensive boards which lead to 23 more shots than the Maroons.

Roanoke kept it close for about 7 minutes before Mennonite began to steadily pull away. The Maroons struggled from the field and missed all 16 of their 3-point attempts. James Tuten and Daniel Andersen lead Roanoke with 10 points apiece.

Washington & Jefferson def. Emory & Henry - 95-90

Presidents win highly anticipated rematch

Washington & Jefferson used a balanced attack and solid rebounding to hold off Emory & Henry. Robert Franklin and Wayne Choate lead the Presidents with 18 points each and 11 and 14 rebounds respectively. Carl Lamb added 16 points and 9 rebounds and Gino Kanode also scored 16. Ernest Blythe rounded out the starting five with 13 points as the Presidents' starters all managed double figures. They dominated the boards to the tune of 55 to 34 and overcame 23 turnovers in the win. Alden Crose lead Emory & Henry with a game high 29 points despite being frequently double teamed. Steven Brubaker added 17, but suffered through 2nd half foul trouble. Mark Cheek and Albert Ayotte added 16 apiece.

In a fast paced game, the first half was mostly back and forth with W&J seeming to control the game holding a small edge until E&H went on a 9-0 run late in the half to take a 4 point lead and held it into the break at 48-46. The Wasps jumped out on the Presidents in the second half to a quick 6-0 run to lead by 8, but foul trouble began to wear on Emory & Henry as starters Brubaker and Alvin Bueche picked up their 4th fouls within the first 4 minutes of the second half while the Wasps were leading by 7. Both teams struggled for a long stretch until Franklin got W&J going by scoring 6 of the next 8 points to tie the game at the 10 minute mark. The Presidents continued the run going 7-1 over the next stretch to re-establish control. The Wasps put on one last charge to tie it on 2 Ayotte free throws, but the Presidents answered with an 11-3 run over the next one and a half minutes and then held on for the win.

Bethany def. Guilford - 81-77 (OT)

Bison pull upset behind Moroney and Robbins

Bethany held off Guilford in a overtime thriller as Michael Moroney poured in 22 points on 7-16 3-point shooting and Nolan Robbins added 21 points. Sean Murphy scored 8 and had a game high 13 rebounds for the Bison. The Quakers were led by Allen Gauvin's 16 points and 12 rebounds and Jerry Jenkins contributed 13 points. Guilford was hurt in the overtime by Matthew Boles fouling out quickly in the extra period.

The Quakers started off well holding an early 4 point advantage, but were stunned by an 11-0 Bison run that later turned into a 10 point edge until the 5 minute mark when Jenkins came alive and got Guilford back in the game scoring 6 of the next 10 points to tie it. A Moroney three at the buzzer gave Bethany a one point edge at the half. The second half was closely fought with 12 ties, 7 lead changes, and no lead greater than 4 through the entire session. Guilford seemed to command the half holding the lead for the most part, but lost it in the last 3 minutes only to tie the game with about 20 seconds remaining. The Quakers survived a last second shot attempt by Murphy to make it to the extra period. The overtime was dominated by Bethany as they started out with a 6-0 run and never gave up the lead. The Quakers cut it to one on a Michael Vaden bucket, but Moroney answered with a three and Arthur Ward got a steal to run the clock down.

Washington & Lee def. Eastern Mennonite - 85-58

Mennonite starters disappear as Royals relegated to PIT in Generals' romp

Eastern Mennonite's starters only managed 25 points and Washington & Lee solved the vaunted Royal defense lighting them up from the outside at a 10-15 clip and dominated the boards at 34-23 in a surprisingly easy win in the quarterfinals. With the loss, Mennonite likely drops off the bubble for a NT bid. Paul Henley lead the charge for the Generals with 14 points and got help from Derek Maloney (12 points) and Harold Webster (11 points). Porter Andrews nearly matched the starter's output with a game high 20 points off the bench for Mennonite.

Andrews opened the game with a free throw early in the game in front of an 11-0 run by W&L highlighted by Henley's 6 points, but Mennonite was still game and answered with a 12-0 run of its own. It looked like it would be a battle of the titans until the Generals put on a 13-0 run and would not let Mennonite back in the game holding a commanding 40-27 halftime lead. The second half got no closer as W&L rolled to an easy victory and a semifinal berth.

Virginia Wesleyan def. Hampden-Sydney - 83-80

Marlins play defense when it matters to hold off upset-minded Tigers

Virginia Wesleyan's defense had holes in it most of the night surrendering 53.4% to Hampden-Sydney, but held the Tigers scoreless over the last 1:45 to advance to the semifinals. Ira Dawson lead the way with 18 points and 10 assists for the Marlins. He got help from Daniel Lagarde's 15 points and Daniel Shoemaker and Harry Roder with 12 points each. The Marlins buried 9-13 three-pointers and 22-26 from the foul line to overcome some shoddy defense. The Tigers were led by two of their big 3 as John Dobbs poured in 20 points and Michael Carls added 13 points, but Robert Harris struggled to a 2-10 night and just 7 points. Harris was also the go-to guy for Hampden-Sydney down the stretch and simply could not convert when the Tigers needed him most.

The first half was hotly contested as the Marlins put on a couple of decent runs, but could not shake the Tigers. Still they held a 41-39 halftime lead. The second half was even closer as both teams held a high scoring advantage of three points until Hampden-Sydney opened a 5 point lead with 2:54 . A Dawson three cut it to one with 54 ticks to go. After a Harris miss, Joseph Ruth knocked down a jumper for the lead with 15 seconds . Another Harris miss followed by two Marlin free throws effectively iced the game as the desperation three fell harmlessly to the ground.

Washington & Jefferson def. Lynchburg - 86-71

Presidents upend #1 seed Hornets behind strong defensive effort

Washington & Jefferson dominated from the start and held off a couple of Hornet rallies to upset Lynchburg in the quarterfinals. Robert Franklin scored at will to the tune of 25 points and added 11 rebounds, while Carl Lamb and Wayne Choate added 18 points apiece. The Presidents held a 27-18 edge in fouls and held the Hornets to a mere 36.6% from the field as Lynchburg's guards were not shy to shoot but could not find the range. PG James Hutton lead the Hornets with 16 points on 5-18 shooting, Paul Dever put up 13 points, and Victor White struggled to 2-11 shooting including 1-9 from deep. Lynchburg inexplicably shot 57.7% from the foul line....a team that normally fires to the tune of 77.5%.

Choate was determined to finish this game early scoring 6 points in a 12-0 run to start the game. Lynchburg never really recovered. The Hornets trimmed the lead to two midway through the first half, but the Presidents answered and pulled back away for a comfortable 44-36 halftime lead. The second half was never really close either as W&J held a commanding lead for the better part of the half. Lynchburg made one late run and trimmed the lead to 5 in the last 3 minutes of the game, but W&J pulled away again to advance to the semifinals.

Washington & Lee def. Bethany - 98-90

Generals get shot at ODAC title behind Lindemann

Washington & Lee has dominated the ODAC West for the last 16 years, but it has also been that long since the Generals have won a conference tournament title. They will get that chance again this year as they picked off the thorn in their side, Bethany Bison. Danny Lindemann scored a team high 21 points and Arthur Smith added 18 points on just 5 shots from the field. The Generals outshot the Bison 53.4% to 45.8% from the field. The Bison got solid efforts from its All-Conference performers Michael Moroney (27 points against a double-team) and Nolan Robbins (19 points).

Early on it was the Bison's Robbins who lead the charge to a 12-5 lead, but an 8-0 run gave the Generals their first lead and tightened the game. The teams battled back and forth for much of the first half until a 9-0 run started by Chris Talley's (13 points off the bench) four points gave W&L a commanding lead that they would not give up. The Generals went into the half up 52-39. The second half would not really be close as W&L kept the Bison at arm's length until the last 30 seconds when Julian Stultz (11 points off the bench) nailed a three to trim the lead to single digits. A three 9 seconds later by Moroney cut it to 6, but W&L converted their free throws and held on for the championship game berth.

Washington & Jefferson def. Virginia Wesleyan - 93-90

Presidents hold off late rally to set up all-brother final from the West

Washington & Jefferson seemed to be in cruise control in their semifinal matchup with division rival Virginia Wesleyan and nearly choked away a chance at the title game, but found just enough offense in the last minute to upset the Marlins. Neither team provided much interference on defense as the Presidents shot 61.5% and the Marlins shot 53.4% from the field. Wayne Choate scored a game high 24 points, 16 in the first half, and got help from juniors Robert Franklin (23 points) and Gino Kanode (18 points). Harry Roder scored a team high 19 points and Daniel Lagarde added 15 points, but it was Ira Dawson (16 points) who kept hitting the big shots to keep the Marlins close.

Choate dominated the early going for the second straight game scoring 7 points in the first three minutes to provide the early lead. The Presidents maintained that lead until a 14-2 run put W&J up 18 at the five minute mark and it looked like a blowout. Marlin center Daniel Shoemaker seemed to be everywhere to start the second half, but for all his efforts his team remained down by double digits. Teammate Dawson helped get the Marlins close with 2 free throws to cut it 6 with 10:46 to go and would hit three-pointers to trim it to 6 again at 4:58, and 3:29, but Wesleyan could not get any closer as W&J answered every time. Roder finally got the Marlins closer with a two buckets within the last 2 minutes to trim it to two and Richard Sabia tied it with just 1:03 remaining. A Franklin miss and it looked like the Marlins might have a shot after trailing the whole game, but Dawson missed a three and Kanode became the hero knocking down a three to provide the final margin.

ODAC Conference Tournament Title Game Recap

Washington & Lee def. Washington & Jefferson - 105-69

Generals earn 2nd conference tournament title in Coach whunt's tenure in romp

Washington & Lee had an answer for Wayne Choate that no other tournament team seemed to have, get him in foul trouble early to relegate him to the pine. Choate picked up two fouls in the first minute of the game and the Presidents seemed stuck in neutral without him as W&L opened a big lead and ran away with the tournament title. The battle of the brothers II saw the Generals punch their ticket to the NT and pushed the Presidents to the PI.

Harold Webster and Justin Riggins led W&L off the bench with 16 points each and starters Paul Henley (14 points), Danny Lindemann (13 points), and Derek Maloney (13 points) provided the spark to knock off the upstart Presidents. W&L shot a sizzling 56.3% from the field and were helped by forcing 24 President turnovers. The scoring leader for the Presidents also came off the bench as Terry Shaw scored 16 points and Stephen Blocher added 15 points. President star small forward Wayne Choate was held to just one point and four fouls and W&J's starters were held to a paltry 16 points as both benches saw plenty of action.

The game was somewhat close despite the absence of Choate as the Presidents kept it to a 15-12 deficit in the early going though they never held a lead. Then the Generals began to put on the smackdown as they went on a 21-2 run and followed it up a short time later with a 14-0 run right before the half to go into the lockerroom up 55-30. The game would not get closer in the second half as the Generals opened up a 46 point lead early in the second stanza and cruised to the easy win.

Guilford def. North Park - 97-73

Quakers overcome early struggles to advance

Guilford came in a heavy favorite in their first round matchup and the final score indicated as much, but the first half looked like this would be a very close finish. Allen Gauvin eventually helped the Quakers pull away in the second half finishing with a game high 24 points and 12 rebounds while Jerry Jenkins added 17 points in the win. David Armijo led the Vikings with 17 points, but North Park was held to just 38.5% from the field.

A close game was suddenly opened up by the Vikings as a mid-half 11-0 run gave them a 24-16 lead. Guilford fought back and eventually closed the gap to one before Gauvin buried two free throws before the half to hold a 38-37 lead at the break. The second half was nothing like the first as the Quakers held the Vikings scoreless for the first four minutes and only two free throws through the first seven minutes as they pulled slowly, but steadily away. Even after North Park finally began finding the range, Guilford continued to pour it on to get the easy 97-73 win.

Washington & Lee def. Marietta - 93-83

Generals open fast and hold off Pioneers to advance

Washington & Lee opened the game with a 10-0 run and never trailed as they advanced to face the #1 team in the nation in the round of 32. Danny Lindemann scored a game high 23 points and added 10 rebounds and fellow center Derek Maloney scored 17 points including key baskets when the game got close. Melvin Morant also scored 16 points for W&L. Sean Huski led Marietta with 19 points who were hurt by 25 turnovers that the Generals converted to 25 points.

After the 10-0 run, W&L held off Marietta for the first half and went into the break up 44-38. The Pioneers quickly cut the lead down to two to start the second half, but Maloney scored to answer leading to a 7-0 run to re-establish the lead. Marietta again cut it to two with 7:37 to go, but Maloney was there again to answer the run and the Generals again pulled away. The Pioneers could not manage a serious run after that and the Generals moved on to the second round.

Alfred def. Lynchburg - 71-56

Hornets disappear down the stretch

Alfred had all the answers for Lynchburg in staving off every run the Hornets could muster and knocking off the #7 seed 71-56. Douglas Dunnigan led all scorers with 18 poitns and low post mate Ronald Butler added 15 points as the Saxons shot 86.3% from the line and held the Hornets to just 41.9% from the field. James Ogara led the Hornets with 15 points and Victor White scored 13 points in the loss. Paul Dever finished his career with an unspectacular 11 points.

Ogara helped the Hornets to an early 3-2 lead, but Alfred answered with an 8-0 run. Lynchburg stormed back and took the lead at 15-14 on White's steal and bucket, but the Saxons again pulled away and controlled the rest of the first half to lead 35-29. A quick start to the second half took the lead to double-digits. Lynchburg managed one last run at the Saxons and cut it to two midway through the second half. Alfred answered once again and pushed the lead up to 15 points and eventually to 17 points late in the game before settling in for the win.

Westminster (PA) def. Bethany - 97-90 (OT)

Bison fall short in upset bid

Bethany it all on the court last night in taking the Westminster Titans to overtime before finally succumbing to the Heartland conference tournament champion 97-90. Despite a 36-24 disparity in fouls, it was the Titans who appeared to be in foul trouble most of the game. The Bison picked up a number of fouls in the extra session, but star shooting guard Michael Moroney picked up two early fouls to start the game and picked up his 5th early in overtime handcuffing the upset bid. David Harriman exploded for 35 points including 6-6 from three-point range for Westminster and got help from Joseph Hott, 21 points on 13-19 FTs, who hit big free throws down the stretch to clinch the game. Moroney finished his career with 9 points. The Bison got solid efforts from their post players as Sean Murphy lead Bethany with 26 points and 13 rebounds and Nolan Robbins added 22 points in his last game.

A fast start by Westminster coupled with Moroney's foul troubles bode poorly for the Bison, but Bethany did not give in. Instead in leaned on its post players and held it together for the first half. Moroney returned in the last 2 minutes and hit a desperation three to cut the halftime deficit to 49-47. The second half was close but seemed to be controlled by the Titans who played much of the second half with multiple starters with 3 fouls each. Bethany finally broke through late and appeared to be in position to win up one with under a minute to play. The Bison turned to William Kopp with 16 seconds who missed the shot but snagged his own rebound and got fouled, however he only managed 1-2 free throws leaving the door open. Westminster came down and tied it sending the game to overtime. A good start for the Bison was quickly marred by Moroney fouling out with 4:21 remaining putting Bethany down 86-85. Murphy answered for the Bison, but then he too fouled out the next time down the court. Bethany would not find the hoop until it was too late after that. Arthur Ward had a key opportunity when he was fouled on a three-pointer, but missed all three chances. Joseph Hott converted 6 of 8 free throws in the last minute to seal the victory for the Titans.

1st Round Postseason Invitational Recaps (Season 28)

Virginia Wesleyan def. Wisconsin, Platteville - 102-65

Marlins send Pioneers back home

Virginia Wesleyan pulled away early and never looked back in rolling over Wisconsin, Platteville in the first round of the PI. The Marlins held a 43-35 rebounding edge despite the Pioneers starting 3 centers. Marlin small forward Joseph Ruth had a field day against the larger slower players scoring 26 points and garnering 6 steals. Daniel Shoemaker added 14 points and Harry Roder added 13 points. Bob Block led the Pioneers with 16 points, but as a team Platteville only shot 39.1% in the loss.

The Marlins got off to a quick start, but the Pioneers battled back early in the game to take a 10-9 lead. From there, it was all Virginia Wesleyan as they went on a 17-1 tear highlighted by six Ruth points in 38 seconds. The Pioneers never really were a serious threat from about midway through first half on. Early in the second half, the Marlins went on a stealing flurry building a 20+ point lead and continued to pile it on until the final horn sounded.

Washington & Jefferson def. Newbury - 69-52

Presidents use balanced attack to oust Nighthawks

Washington & Jefferson got yet another solid effort from Wayne Choate scoring 12 points, but it was more of a balanced attack for the Presidents that lead them to victory. W&J scored on their first 3 possessions including three-pointers by Gino Kanode and Robert Franklin and never allowed Newbury to get within 5 points over the last 34 minutes of the game. The Presidents held a 36-28 edge in rebounds and took care of the ball, only turning it over 5 times for the game. Raymond Hanneman scored a game high 17 points for the Nighthawks who were held to just 37.8% from the field.

After the hot opening by the Presidents, Newbury trimmed it to two on a Hanneman three-pointer, but Choate answered with the next 6 points W&J. The Presidents continued to pull away and kept the Nighthawks down around 10 points for most of the game. Newbury's Joseph Cox twice went down with lower extremity injuries during the game, but both times was able to return though he was not very effective against the stout President defense, managing just one point.

Eastern Mennonite def. Marian - 80-69 (2OT)

Royals rely on deep bench to hold off Sabres

Eastern Mennonite fought long and hard to stay alive against Marian until they finally wore down the MIAA opponent in outscoring them 12-1 in the second overtime to advance. Depth at center proved vital for the Royals as each big played a major role in the victory. Ted Clarke led Mennonite with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Sidney Heard provided the backcourt firepower with 17 points. Richard Hodge had a big game for the Sabres with a game high 19 points, 9 assists, and 4 steals, but was also saddled with 5 turnovers. The Royal defense did come to play holding Marian to just 40.7% from the field.

It didn't appear that the defense was going to be there for Mennonite as the Sabres started strong scoring on their first 9 possessions to lead 20-11. Mennonite battled back with an 11-0 run that seemed to turn it around. Marian was not done as they rattled off another 8-0 run to finish the half leading 38-31. The second half didn't start much better as the Royals quickly found themselves in a 12 point hole, but Mennonite kept fighting and finally two free throws by center Porter Andrews with six minutes to go put the Royals up one. Still, the Royals needed some help late in regulation as Steve Weber followed up a miss with 2 seconds to send it to the first overtime. In the first extra session, starting center Joe Hubbard picked up two quick fouls to send him to bench with 5, but Clarke came up big keeping the Royals in the game. Center Harold Williams nailed a short jumper with 8 seconds to send it to a second OT. From there, the Royals made it clear there would be no third OT as they scored the first 8 points on their way to a 12-1 period to eliminate the Sabres.

Guilford def. St. Scholastica - 85-62

Quakers prove too much for Saints

Guilford withstood an early hot start by St. Scholastica and kept the pressure on to finally pull away in the second half and advance to the sweet 16. Allen Gauvin scored a game high 25 points with 12 rebounds to lead the way for the Quakers who got solid efforts from Matthew Boles and Christopher Chaplin with 12 point apiece. The Saints had a balanced attack in which eight players scored between six and eleven points, but they were held to just 40.4% from the field.

It didn't appear that field goal percentage would be that low early as the Saints jumped out to an early lead behind 3 three-pointers by Earl Kelemen. The Quakers didn't panic and simply kept scoring as Gauvin dropped 14 of his 25 in the first half to take a 44-40 lead at the break. Guilford opened the second half quickly and held a 10 point advantage for much of the second half before blowing it open in the last seven minutes.

Dickinson def. Washington & Lee - 75-72

Generals lose heartbreaker to #1 team in nation

Washington & Lee got a tough draw in facing midwest #2 seed and #1 team in nation, Dickinson, in the second round of the NT. The Generals gave them all they could handle before falling 75-72. Scott Hubbard and Steven Adams lead a balanced attack by the Red Devils who took the game by converting at the foul line at a 75.8% clip against the Generals' 66.7%. W&L actually shot better from the field, but had the tables turned on them as the Red Devils forced 17 turnovers. Derek Maloney and Melvin Morant each had 15 points and Arthur Smith added 11 points in the loss.

Things looked good for the Generals early as they held the Red Devils in check by could only manage a 7-2 lead during Dickinson's troubles. Once Dickinson found the range, they began to pour it on in the first half using a 13-0 run fueled by Adams to open a big lead by the break, 42-32. The General's starting center Danny Lindemann struggled throughout the day and was in foul trouble with 3 fouls by halftime. Still W&L cut into the lead and finally caught up on a Smith three-pointer to tie it with 12 minutes to go. The lead changed hands until Dickinson reasserted itself and opened an eight point advantage with just 2:21 . W&L used its pressure defense to get back in the game as Smith picked up two quick steals and converted to cut the deficit to two with 1:41 to play. After two Howard Sullivan free throws for the Red Devils to make it a four-point game, Morant drained a huge three to cut it to one. After a bucket for Dickinson, Morant had a chance to tie it, but his three-pointer would not drop and the Red Devils escaped with the win.

Virginia Wesleyan def. Clarkson - 84-80

Marlins use huge free throw advantage to hang on to defeat Golden Knights

Virginia Wesleyan hit 25 more free throws than Clarkson and needed every one of them as they held on for a four point victory and a 3rd round PI berth. Daniel Shoemaker's 19 points combined with Harry Roder's 19 points and 14 rebounds led the Marlins. The two post players combined for 26-35 free throw shooting on the night helping VW overcome a poor shooting night in which they only hit 35.5% of their shots. An ugly game for the most part, the teams combined for 39 turnovers. Matthew Klar led the Golden Knights with 17 points and Thomas Woodbury added 15.

The teams battled early on and Clarkson seemed to take control and held a lead for much of the first half until a Daniel Lagarde three-pointer followed by a tip in by Ralph Cassady got the Marlins over the hump. After one free throw converted by the Golden Knights, VW went on an 11-0 run to take charge of the game and a 10 point halftime lead. Wesleyan continued to control the second half until the five minute mark when Clarkson got the lead down to two. Ira Dawson scored 8 of the Marlins' next 9 points to maintain the advantage and Shoemaker took over from there to hold off the late charge by the Golden Knights.

Washington & Jefferson def. Moravian - 99-85

Blythe comes up big as Presidents tame Greyhounds

Washington & Jefferson took a while to get going, but once they got started they rolled over Moravian. The biggest difference was seen at the free throw line as the Presidents hit 38-51 while the Greyhounds shot a respectable 16-23. W&J also controlled the boards 42-31 which lead to a few of those free throws. Ernest Blythe came to life scoring a season high 24 points for the Presidents. Robert Franklin helped Blythe with 16 points and 10 rebounds and all-everything small forward Wayne Choate added 15 points. Joseph Adams led Moravian with 16 points in the loss.

Early on it looked like the Greyhounds would run away with the game as they held the lead for much of the first half. W&J kept it close and the teams traded the lead a number of times in the opening half until the Presidents gained the high ground at the end of the half. W&J opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a comfortable lead, but Moravian was not done trimming the lead to two with 9:55 remaining. However, the Presidents had an answer for every run and eventually built a 19 point lead before settling for the 14 point win.

Manchester def. Eastern Mennonite - 75-72

Royals blow big lead then fall to Spartans

Eastern Mennonite seemed to have solved the Manchester defense and put it in cruise control for what they thought was an easy win only to blow a 19 point second half lead over the last 9 minutes of the game and lost by three. On a night in which their shot wasn't dropping, the Royals made their way to the line and converting an astounding 42-53 free throws compared to just 9-15 for the Spartans. Unfortunately they could not overcome untimely turnovers and a 30% night from the field. Harry Brown led the Spartans with 15 points and got help from Andrew Mosser's 13 points. The quad centers of the Royals all had solid games as Ted Clarke hit for 15 points, Joe Hubbard 13 points, and Porter Andrews and Harold Williams had 10 points each off the bench. Unfortunately there was no outside game for the Royals as Sidney Heard struggled to a 1-14 night.

Mennonite got off to a slow start, finding themselves down eight early on, but they went on a 18-0 tear and settled in to take a 36-33 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Royals continued to play strong pushing the lead up to 19 points with 8:44 remaining and it seemed like the game was over. The Spartans had other plans cutting the lead to single digits by the 5:37 mark, to one by the 2:40 mark, and finally getting the lead with just 1:04 . Mennonite had two turnovers down the stretch and multiple missed threes in the last minute as they desperately tried to tie the game. The loss ends a frustrating season for the Royals who had national tournament aspirations heading into the year.

Guilford def. Wisconsin, River Falls - 86-64

Quakers dominate upstart Falcons

Guilford lead from start to finish easily handling 15th seeded Wisconsin, River Falls to advance to the Elite 8. The Quakers dominated throughout as they held a 41-28 rebounding edge and outshot the Falcons 51.9% to 39.3%. Matthew Boles lead the Quakers with 16 points and Allen Gauvin and William Kelsch added 13 points apiece in the win. Ryan Dempsey lead the way for the Falcons with 12 points.

Jerry Jenkins opened the game with a three-pointer off the tip and Gauvin made a three-point play the old fashioned way to give the Quakers the lead that it would not give back. The first half never really seemed to see a major run by Guilford but by the half they had built a commanding 56-37 lead. River Falls tried to get back in it in the second half and did trim the lead to 10 points early in the half, but Guilford's stifling defense put an end to those hopes and they pulled back away to advance to the Elite 8 to face their first single digit seed in #1 Waynesburg.

Virginia Wesleyan def. Marywood - 61-40

Marlins ride threes, defense to PI final four berth

Virginia Wesleyan started slowly, but used a suffocating defense and solid three-point shooting to eventually pull away from the Pacers of Marywood. The Marlins shot a solid 8-13 for 61.5% from deep and held Marywood to just 30% from the field including 3-16 in the second half. Daniel Lagarde scored a game high 18 points on 5-7 shooting from beyond the arc and Ira Dawson added 16 points on 3-5 from three-point land for the victors. Christopher Demarco led the Pacers with 12 points.

The Marlins started slowly, down 6-0, but fought back to even it up and the teams played very close for the rest of the first half. Dawson converted all three free throws after being fouled behind the arc to take a 27-23 lead into the break. Once again, the Pacers started strongly and quickly tied the game, but the Marlins had the answer. A 14-0 run over the middle of the second half that last nearly six minutes put the nail in the Pacers' coffin. Marywood never seriously challenged after that as Wesleyan rolled to the easy win.

Washington & Jefferson def. Utica - 83-79

Presidents hold off Pioneers behind solid bench play

Washington & Jefferson once again turned to an unlikely source to extend their season. This time the bench came up big as the starters sputtered. Stephen Blocher poured 19 points and Jeffrey Hood added 11 points both leading the team off the bench and the Presidents overcame a furious second half comeback by Utica to move on to the semifinals. Santos Coletti also scored 19 points and added 11 rebounds in the loss for the Pioneers who were outrebounded 51-40.

W&J started off strong and controlled the game for the most part. Their lead was cut to one at the 11:03 mark in the first half, but the Presidents answered to pull back away for a 13 point halftime advantage behind the play of Blocher and Ernest Blythe. The second continued to be controlled by the Presidents, but the Pioneers slowly trimmed it down until taking their first lead with 8:56 to play. W&J immediately took the lead back and then hold on for the four point victory.
