Ill defend my actions with my team. I inherited a team with basically ZERO major league talent and only one or two major league ready guys. I did promote those guys (one of whom is probably going to win ROY), but I did not waste any payroll on free agents when I knew this team had no shot at competing. Instead I let the remaining bad contracts play out the season while letting my young talent get another season in the minors. I have 5 stud pitching prospects in my system and several solid hitters. I am hoping with offseason improvement I can get a majority of these kids up next season, and if I can then I will be able to invest in free agency and field a team that should be at or near .500

I was able to sign several internationals this season with the money I saved on payroll and now have a team built for long term success. when a franchise has been as decimated as the one I took over, it would have been a crime to overspend on stop-gap players when I had a chance to build a strong farm system.

The crime was sending AA/AAA players out to face BL players when 4-5m could have brought a few cheap, after market FA to one year deals to fix your roster.

But, as I said when this started, I'm not going to complain about tanking. I just wish those that did it wouldn't bother to pretend that wasn't what they did.

On the anti-tanking front, crabby and I played it out to the very end for 2nd(I kicked his sorry ***) while pstrnutbag and softball1(a holdover) went on win streaks to finish the season. What did we get for our troubles? Draft picks out of the top 16 thus putting us in the uneviable position of losing first round picks for Type A FA next season.

You should have tanked to avoid that.

Can't preach that tankers are the devil and then tank.

Just call it something else. Ahhhh, with a fancy name, of course.

I traded for 2 decent SP making over $15M and proceeded to make my team worse. Not one of my better moves.

moose, I could call it "an indifference to winning" but, in the end, it's really the same thing.

The owners I think tanked didn't throw 0(0) pitchers or play catchers at SS, they just didn't do much to compete. Unused salary sat there until they transferred it to prospects while playing guys who, if they were in a pennant race, would have been shipped out for someone who could help them win.

My team went into a nice tailspin at the end to preserve my top 16 pick.

I could have went 2 directions with my club..stay put and collect a higher draft pick while winning less games...or try my damndest to sign or pick up guys that will help my team win now AND in the future.

I demoted and waived my useless expensive players, promoted a few defensive type players with no offense to replace the useless vets, signed a decent veteran pitcher, picked up my defensive CFer through the rule 5 along with a decent reliever, and used the WW to pick up some platoon type players.

In doing all of that, I ended up with the best defensive team in the NL, thus helping out my mediocre pitching staff, thus winning more games.

Now I did lose alot of one run games, and will address the offense next season...

So yeah, like I said, I could have went 2 directions with my club. In the end, I didnt kill my future by making dumb signings, and I didnt kill my present by not trying.

Down the stretch, I traded my top two pitchers for three future big leaguers. Of course, "top two pitchers" didn't mean much on my team as I had about 18 of equal ability on my roster(all 18 would be 8th/9th on a "good" staff) but that's what they were.

My concept of a "decimated" franchise would not include five stud pitching prospects, the very kind of talent it is most difficult to accumulate in HBD, and which so many noobs deal away.

Just saying.

My franchise was decimated. The previous owner, in his last official acts, traded away every prospect he could. He actually got some respectable talent for them but, in an "odd" move, didn't assign any of the talented players while assigning the turds he rec'd in the same trade.

Had I been with any talent, I might have been tempted to tear it down. But, since we were already torn down, I didn't see the point. I have a 46m payroll next season(despite paying some salaries for players I don't have due to the above) and a respectable team that I pieced together with band-aids and duct tape.

Season 2 is almost upon us. Two owners were unable to fulfill their committments of .500 or stay. One has been replaced. One just announced it. So, if you missed the boat the first time, now's your chance.
