Forwards can play any position without statistical penalty, unlike using forwards on defense or defense at a forward position. (About the only "penalty" you may incur is at the faceoff)
Check their faceoff stats in the database. The NHL assigns the positions, but often they have no basis in real life. (For some stupid reason, 2010-11 Datsyuk is listed as a LW.) Many forwards play two or three positions. On my 92-93 team, LW Valeri Zelepukin won 250 of 499 faceoffs, according to the database. If he was taking six faceoffs a game, what position did he
really play?
