Forwards can play any position without statistical penalty, unlike using forwards on defense or defense at a forward position. (About the only "penalty" you may incur is at the faceoff)

Check their faceoff stats in the database.  The NHL assigns the positions, but often they have no basis in real life.  (For some stupid reason, 2010-11 Datsyuk is listed as a LW.)  Many forwards play two or three positions.  On my 92-93 team, LW Valeri Zelepukin won 250 of 499 faceoffs, according to the database.  If he was taking six faceoffs a game, what position did he really play?

also, the sim is designed so the best forward on the ice takes the faceoff more often, rather than the guy assigned at center.  so if you have a center that takes a lot of faceoffs playing left wing, he will still continue to take a lot of faceoffs in the sim.  at least that is how it was explained to me once upon a time by admin.  :>
