Theme league ideas kicking around Topic

I thought about a progressive league that contracts the worst teams every season. Starts at 24 then 20, 18, 16, and 14 to finish. Contracted players go into a draft seperate from rokkie draft where best record picks first. Prevents teams form trying to build for one big year. Play to win each season.

Or you could start a regressive with 30 then 28 26 etc etc,
How ever a lot of us don't like the 20 and 18 team format because only 2 teams make the playoffs.

Yes, that format is terrible. I had to use it once in my progressive & alot of owners said if we used it again they would quit.

I don't know how you could make 18 work, but 20 seems easy...two 5-team divisions in each league. If 16 teams can get 4 into the play-offs, why can't 20?.

With 18 I guess you could have a 10 team and an 8 team league and go from there.

I would like to see a league with open auction bidding, like fantasy/rostisserie baseball.

Everyone would start with a budget, let's say 100m, and then bid on players to fill out their roster. Their WIS salary would not be factored in. You'd have to figure out a way so that we were not bidding, one player at a time - that would take forever. Perhaps each day, bid on players for a specific position. The bids would be open for 24 hours on a message board, before moving onto the next position - high bid gets the guy. You could bid on multiple players of a given position, but could only win one.

It would have to be fleshed out more, but could be fun.

I really like this idea. I played 15 years of Roto Baseball and auction day was the best day of the year.

I agree the idea needs to be fleshed out, but if it gets nailed down it could be a whole new part of the SIM experience - even have its own message board.

One problem, besides the length of the draft, is the incredibly large amount of players available in the data base.

If enough people like this idea, Spotsell you should start its own Topic. Anybody else up for it?

There was a league along these lines a few years ago. Can't remember who the commish was. We used the 1992 season and had $260 to use for players and ballpark. Deadline was 10pm et each day. It took about 45 days to go through all the players. It was like crack

beernoser i believe

They use what real life baseball used. Since the only 20 team format used was 2 10 team divisions with only 2 makng the playoffs, that is the only one they use.

I know there are issues with the formats but I came up with the idea becuase I dont like how teams build for one super season in progressives.

Maybe we use walks to replace RBIs. As far as pitchers' categories, I think we can use the regular five categories, including both wins and saves. I realize that there's some correlation there too, but your team's success should be worth a little more. We could even add defense (fielding% and/or +/- differential) if we wanted to.
I've started up a new theme based on this idea.

Example:

"Daddy's Gone to Memphis": Must select a player who played for Memphis at some point in their Minor League Career.

"Money for Nothing"
"Brothers in arms"
"Walk of Life"
"All the Road Running"
"Boom Like That"
to name but a few song titles.
A couple years ago, Boddicker, ran a Johnny Cash & Bruce Springsteen tribute league using their song titles. Not hard to find 25 good songs from those 2!

I'd like to see the "Sandy Koufax Tribute League" where you have to use every player's LAST season in the WIS database. See who else really went out on top. Probably have to ban 1885 and 2008 though.

I'm interested in a short term progressive, say 5 seasons. Tournament style, the top combined w-l records receive prizes. I get burned out on some progressives, and this would likely have a much lower dropout rate...

I'd like to bring back the Time Warp league that went on for a long time. Either sallyleaguer or slim senior was the commish...It's a progressive of sorts, you do an initial draft of a ten season span of 1900-1909, then the next season you can keep as many or as few as you like, you'd then use any of their 1910-1919 seasons, and so on...If I drafted Cobb I could use any 1900-1909 season of his, then the next leg I could use a 1910-1919 season. You draft only in the spots where you don't keep a player. We had 1 1st round pick, then drafted 2, 3, 4 and 5 players per round in a snake draft. Something like that anyway...

There is something like this getting started in the live play arena.

ive been kicking around an idea something along these lines....

Pitching is everything. Trying to get as many no hitters as possible. You get a bonus amount of "wins" for each no hitter, 1 hitter and say 2 hitters thrown in the season, but you lose "wins" each time its done to you, or each time your staff gives up say more than 12 hits..or something along those lines. I havent worked out the specs yet. But the position players would be limited to a max salary per player. Whch i need to try and work out yet.

How about an "all or nothing" league full of guys who did nothing but go up to the plate and hack? Batters would be required to have something like a sub .230 BA with at least .350 SLG. Perhaps pitchers would also have to have a poor home run rating also.

To add to the flavor, each team could be required to have one of the 3 WIS players who have a sub .200 BA and over 20 home runs - '01 McGwire (.187, 29 HR), '99 Rivera (.195, 23 HR), or my favorite hack, Rob Deer (.179, 25 HR).

I've always been amused by such players.
