what about any sort of degree of difficulty....does a championship at a low to mid-range DI school indicate a better coach than a championship at a high-profile BCS school? i.e. two of the last 3 championships in Allen have been won by Ivy League schools

James, I feel right now, more than any time in the 3 years I have been here, that it is the eziest time for that to happen. Not to take away from the guys who just did that,,, however,,, those teams won with considerably less talented rosters than alot of the teams they beat along the way. Are they great coaches... or... were they lucky flippers in the current version of coin-flip-dynasty? and the debate continues....

that is of course unless somehow now 90 > 100 and I just wasn't aware of the fact that lower core skills makes a better team.

Wouldn't I have had to say that for you to agree with me?

Any coach still playing should be eliminated since all the good coaches quit years ago.

dcy, tanner just likes to egg people on.

gin, on the other hand, is a pasty-faced nancy boy who hasn't been relevant in eons. He's funny though.

Tricky. My initial instict was to say one master list, but that's inherently going to favor coaches who play in a lot of worlds vs. ones who only play in a couple.

2) should the list be the result of an objective computation of a formula? should the formula be public? or secret? or should the list be more subjective? would you go so far as to include non-gameplay factors such as contributions to the forums?

I vote two lists -- one subjective with a poll, the other based on a formula. I remember VD had at least one question in his HD Survey in this realm, I remember, "Which coach would you least like to match up with in a big game". Shockingly, OR won.

3) what should i do with aliases?

Count 'em. Definitely.

4) should it be an "all time" list which considers all coaches since day1 of HD and considers the entire career of every coach? or should it consider the past year? or past ten seasons? etc?

For the subjective list, I think you should be able to list whoever you want. For the numbers-based list, I think someone should've played fairly recently, though not sure what the cut-off should be.

5) if i decide to do a huge "master" list, how should i deal with the fact that some coaches have 5+ teams and that helps them to compile big win totals? but at the same time many of these multi-team coaches often experiment (which can help the HD community gain knowledge soemtimes) and that may drag down thier winning percentage, how do we deal with that?

It's going to be an imperfect system no matter how it's set up (which is part of the reason I might favor the subjective list). How do you account for guys who always jump up the best, ready-made team vs. those who usually take in major rebuids? For guys who park at elite/BCS teams vs. those who've had impressively consistent success at low/mids. DI vs. other divisions? Really tough schedulers vs. easy ones?

All of these things can make a big difference when you tally the final statistics and skew things a ton.

6) one last thought... maybe i will put out a "rough draft list" encourage feedback and debate. and then revise the list into a final draft after considering the feedback. does that make any sense?

Sure, I think there's always value in that sort of thing.

I've got an idea for the minimums to be eligible for the list. 1000 career wins, .600 winning percentage and 1 championship. That many wins should cut out any flukey coaches.

Only one problem. If you only count individual user names, that eliminates a coach like Coach_BillyG. He's only got 32 seasons under that ID, and thus only 781 wins, but he's got 9 National Titles in those 32 seasons. He's obviously one of the best ones going........

Of course, this is a no-brainer. I would almost make it a user voted list. No offense OD, but you will miss someone. The more user input the better.

Alright, here's my attempt at "scoring" this:

Its gotta be user voted. You send out a sitemail and post here in the forums. In the sitemail you have each user make a list of their Top 10 coaches.

Now, no crazy forumla. 10pts - 1st, 9pts - 2nd, 8pts - 3rd, etc. . . .

The crazy formula comes in the tabulation. First, who is voting matters. Regular points alotted for all coaches (10, 9, 8, 7, etc...). If you coached more than 2000 HD games your points are doubled. If you coached more than 4000 HD games your points are tripled and so on. . . .
***Minimum of 200 games played (no stuffing the ballot box with a bunch of fake ID's). ***

Example. Vandydave has over 8000 games played. His votes would be worth 5x. Whoever he voted for in 1st place would get 50pts, 2nd - 45, 3rd - 40, etc. . . .

Reason: The more games you've played, the more coaches you've run into. And your opinion is that much more valuable. A recreational HDer that has 1000 games under his belt isnt going to know as may coaches as VD.

Also no combining user IDs for voting purposes. Will cause too much confusion. If you want to count both your ID's vote with both of them. But you cannot use comined wins

Last 'adjustment' would be to double the points of any user that has not been in the game for over a year. Triple for a coach that has been away for over thee years.

Example. Plumpy would not get a huge amount of votes Because probably half the users dont even know who he is. But the simple fact that he would get votes 3 years later means something and should be adjusted for. So say his grand total came to 430 pts. Tripled he would be at 1290.

Wow, i think i just confused myself.

To sum up coherantly. ..

Have all HD coaches rank their Top 10 coaches.
Add up the list
Veteran users votes count more
Retired users scores must be adjusted slightly higher

thats it . . . .

i'm thinking oldave wants this to be a lot bigger than just top 10
