Obviously, if you're planning long-term success at the expense of current season success(which I wouldn't do), you sacrifice the players you don't expect to be around long-term. Which generally means olders players who will decline or be pushed out by the time you L-T success begins to materialize.

not so much at the expense of overall current season success, but maybe current value that's expendable. Winning a division by 20 games or 2 games either way gets you the division...but by 2 might include a better long-term position.

I look at my current team and the team I expect to have in 2-3 seasons. If I can trade a 33 year old without adversely affecting my current season and I have a 23 year old who'll be ready to take his spot next season, I'll explore my options. But, if a player is going to cost/give me 18 wins, he's not someone I consider expendable. I want him in the playoffs.
