Most noticeably absent is Rose, the all-time hits leader who was banished from the game 20 years ago for gambling. Payne omitted Rose because he was the star of the art museum's last fundraising artwork, by pop artist Andy Warhol in 1985, and not because of his infamous off-field activities.
"Why isn't Pete in the picture? That's easy. Pete was featured in the last one for the museum," says Payne, 55, who grew up in suburban Wyoming and attended the last Reds game at Crosley Field in 1970.
"I'm one of the biggest Pete Rose supporters. Pete came to see me when I was in the hospital as a little kid, when I was 11 or 12. I've got the picture. I firmly believe he should be in the Hall of Fame as a player," Payne says.
