Im pretty sure there is a high profile highly succesful coach among us that has or does use boosters to a degree of success I will not call this guy out but Im sure there is a way they can work but it is not really worth it at there surrent state. Im for them being reworked but it isnt the most important thing to address at this point and at the rate improvments are made ill prolly never see it in my lifetime.

Old d said "So it does make me wonder why you started the thread... to learn more about booster gifts? or to express your views on the topic? "

Am I not allowed to do both, by your rules? I wanted to get a consensus of opinions as well as express mine. I still haven't heard you say where your learned opinions came from. I learned a lot from people that have actually used booster gifts. I learned nothing from your thoughtful responses.

Then you must not have read them.

An absolute pearl of wisdom, whereas my suggestion that they were worth about a home visit was "asinine". Maybe an ego check is in order.

How is what you said any more valuable then what I said? Yours made some wacky conclusion based on, even as you admitted no usage yourself. Yet somehow my thoughts and opinions are not valid? Are you the only one allowed to have an opinion in your thread? Amazing.

Here are a few points that I made that you missed:

  • not every player will even accept a gift, therefore sometimes a gift has a high value and sometimes it has zero value.
  • That said I don't believe that I am for that at the moment as there are so many other things that could and should be fixed about recruiting before a serious discussion is had about the value of booster gifts.
  • You don't even know if the player accepted them or not in these 'cases' that you have seen. (Therefore you saying that they are worth "about a home visit" is clearly mislead beacuse they likely were not accepted at all, rendering them worthless).

In which post did I say that my opinions were any more valuable than yours, zhawk? You called my opinions about the Booster gifts as "asinine" and "******** about boosters". I asked if you were having a bad day and said "try decaf".

Your opinion that some booster gifts have high value and some have none was as useless as my saying that they have the value of a home visit. I asked how much is high. Can a D prestige school land a 5 star player at times? brianp provided specific examples. Yours were just opinions stated as fact. MINE WERE OPINIONS. Feel free to disagree or dispute, but I don't think name calling over a simple opinion was called for.

Hey kids, when recess is called, why don't you two settle this on the playground?

100% agreed dcy. I really don't understand the posts that end up becoming mud slinging. fussy d seems to be the biggest target. Thanks for bringing some sense to this nonsense.

If boosters were broken in anyway then sure but you have never tried them so how the heck can you say they are only worth a home visit? You don't even know if the player accepted them or not in these 'cases' that you have seen. And I highly doubt that the players in these cases you site accepted the gift.
jet, zhawks point is completely valid. I don't think there is any way to equate a value on boosters in terms of a home visit. It will vary depending upon whether you get messages that the player values bling.

Also, I don't know how you could have concluded that they were worth one home visit when you have not used them. If they were only worth one home visit, no one would ever land a player by using them. Very few recruiting battles have been won by the difference of one home visit!!

No they can't because a 5 star player won't talk to a D prestige school. It is basic recruiting knowledge for that answer. If a D prestige school could somehow get a 5 star player to talk to them, yes I would imagine that booster gifts (given the correct player personality) could help sway the recruit.

And it is not my opinion that some are high valued and some are worth nothing, that is HD fact. That is where you are misunderstanding me here. You fail to understand the fact that some players deny booster gifts and therefore they are worthless, while some players will accept them and then, based on the type of gift, their value is higher.

The other great thing about boosters is that because you use much less of your actual recruiting budget to 'lock up' players it puts you in prime position to (pick your words) swoop in on , snipe, snatch, or poach other recruits.

i have mixed feelings. there is a part of me that thinks to expand booster gifts a bit and allow them to get away with it a bit more often might add something to the game, but then im not sure how id feel when i am the A+ prestige guy sitting on a 5star and here comes this chump with a pile of booster cash and he blows me away. not sure id be real happy in that case. i can only think of one time where something kind of like that (not that extreme) happened to me, and it was frustrating
Well, I used them at D2 years ago and didn't get caught. Generally was afraid of them until a couple of months ago when I used them on one of my "caught between a rock and hard place" east coast teams, which didn't work out, then a few days later at my higher prestige school. Got caught both times and the results are vastly differant. The poor school was already at boosters complaining, so the combination of poor success and poor rep meant that I couldn't move to another D1 school, whereas the successful school took the rep hit (which is a non-factor if you are solid with boosters and are staying at a school), probation (again, who cares it just doesn't get you ranked), and a prestige hit that was restored at season's end.

Now whould I do it again (these happened in overlapping recruiting before the first school got caught and I finally found out first hand the reprocussions), no. But I do think it is a much easier thing for anyone over a C who doesn't have boosters complaining to do and get over.

That being said, I agree that it should be more fully flushed out an have more success and a more variable rate of punishment. I got nabbed for shirts on an undeclared when I was out of money and got nearly the same punishment as another guy who threw out higher value gifts. And like I said, it hurt the lower prestige school much worse than the higher circumstancially; which tells me #1 that they should never be done in desperation jobwise, but also that they are only useful to those secure in their jobs. I think the penalties should reflect expectation more and that higher prestige programs should suffer more of booster backlash. Look at the heat Calapari is getting that someone from a low major wouldn't.
