March Madness going to 96 teams Topic

First 4 out: Louisville, Seton Hall, Marquette, Wichita State
Next 4 out: Illinois, UVA, UNC, Dayton

So the 8 teams in my four last chance playins would be ODU, Florida, Cinncy, UConn, Illinois, UVA, UNC and Dayton

Now, it wont be those teams exactly, but that is indicative of what I think one should expect 5 or 6 BCS teams and 2 or 3 midmajor etc

This is why I think 72 would be a good number...not that I'm advocating expansion though.

Adding the 65th team and forcing the 64th and 65th seeded teams, i.e., automatic qualifiers, instead of the two worst at-large teams to play their way into the tournament is a pock on the NCAA tournament as far as I'm concerned.

Just let every school play and don't bother keeping score. The team whose mom brings the best snacks wins.

I can agree with 72. It is much better then 96.

The conference data is harder to come by...I would have to manually go through this book and count the number of conferences for each season and to be honest, I don't feel like doing it at the moment. Also, I'm not sure when the auto bid for every conference rule started...that'd be interesting to know.

But it's good for conferences to get at least 1 rep in, also helps them with revenue. Sure this proposed idea would do the same, but seriously we don't need the 2nd best team from the Sun Belt conference in the big dance.

16 best teams, regardless of conference affiliation should get in.

have 4 other 16 team tournaments for the also-rans, and the winner of those four meet in their own final 4.

dont forget that at the end of the game each team gathers in a circle and chants "2 4 6 8, who do we appreciate [insert other team name or uniform color]"

To further this point lol...taking a look at my 2009 ESPN Almanac...15 and 16 seeds (the ones the 8 "extra" teams would be "playing in" for) are 4-200 all-time (since 1985?) and this further seems to thwart adding more dreck.

Through the 2008 tournament, 13-16 seeds are a collective 45-384...might be 45-400 through 2009, though I can't remember if any 13-16s won...don't think they did...even if one won...46-400? Don't do it.

I like metsmax idea a lot. With colonels info:

'76: 14% -32 teams
'79: 16% -40 teams
'80: 18% -48 teams
'83: 19% -52 teams
'84: 19% -53 teams
'85: 23% -64 teams
'01: 20% -65 teams

'10: 23%- 80 teams if you did the same as when moving to 64 teams
'10: 27%- 92 teams if you do the 92 team expansion, most likely lower once new teams join D1 before it starts

I think 20% is that "butter zone" per se....72/347 gives you 20.7% I don't see a reason to go over that quite frankly. I have always found it odd that they only added 1 "play-in" game...not 4.

If March Madness became the same protect the big conference scheme that is the BCS, I, for one, will stop watching.

Any additional teams added would just be cannon fodder. This would be done strictly for TV revenue and to cut down on potential lawsuits. The BCS football format is currently slated for review by the feds because of legal challanges from Utah Senator Orin Hatch. I think football needs to go to a playoff system myself but that is a totally different subject.

Back on the topic of cannon fodder, the last non-BCS team to win the NCAA tournament was UNLV in 1990. There is absolutely no chance any added team comes even close.

speakiing of 15 seeds, I was there the night the first 15 ever beat a 2 seed - 1991 - at Cole Field House on the campus of the University of Maryland - Syracuse with 3 or 4 future NBA players against the Richmond Spiders. Let me tell you, I cant think of a more exciting night of basketball. There was a lot of anti Cuse feeling in the room from the start - between ACC fans who didnt like the Big East and Big east fans who didnt like Cuse.

Once it became clear that Richmond had a chance, the building was filled with "Lets Go Spiders!" - Cole can be very loud and I dont recall hearing it louder.....I with my ears ringing as Cuse fell to the Spiders....ah, those were the days
