Emy you might be selling yourself short, you do have 6 championships combined under your 2 names, and your the all-time wins leader in Tark where you've won titles under both your names, 2? in D2 and 1 in D1. Can't make a top 12 list, because I haven't been around that long, and only plyaing my 4th season of D1 I really have no clue who the top coaches are at that level besides the "Holy Trinity."

i mentioned plumpy. another retired coach: mswilso2 i think his original ID was mswilson

yeah, i think emy is feeling bad because his team kicked my teams but, and then he stole my thunder in the CC.

id like to think i could sneak into the second or third conference,,, but i dont think i could bust into the top12...both emy and vdave would prolly go in ahead of me.

grea thread idea though... really great...

Hey emy, what do you say we start a thread ----Top12 coaches of all time!

here's my thoughts.

we ask for nominations where each nominator would fill out thier own top12 (no more , no less) and then we would compile all those "votes" and then see where we go from there. maybe we have a second vote. maybe we ask certain well-informed coaches to please vote. mybe we even make adjustments as we see fit. maybe we thow out certain ballots if they seem bogus to us.

in the end, we have the top12--- the topdog cofnerence (and we list how many NCs, and other stuff for each coach)

and we also have an almostfamous conference which is the next 12

and maybe even a third conference, im sure there will be at least 36 coaches that deserve recognition

what do you think?

do you want to start it? or do you want me to?

wooden is not like other worlds. if you join one of the four bcs conferences there is a lot of activity. each day there will be at least a page-full of activity on the CCs. there is an active "dynasty rankings" of top coaches thats spanned about 30 seasons. and there are countless rivalries that keep you checking the world.... not just for your team, but to check others... and the biggest rivalry is amongst conferences. it gets heated between the NAC, midwest, mich, and upstate. all culminating in an OOC tourney called the "gangbang". and there's a few up and commers. the little east, ASC, and minnesota are all in the second tier, but looking to break through any season now...

basically, its not your typical, boring, monotonous world. there's a ton of stuff going on that makes it super interesting all year long. and i'd give it a shot, at least for one season. even though its slower, you might come to like it more than the 2-a-days.

there might be an opening or two in one of the four BCS conferences. which, there is no way you would walk away from if you joined for a season...

give it a shot!

didnt you attempt some thing of the sort? about six months back? you had a self-fulfilling prophecy as well, where you said that you wouldn't finish it.

i like the idea. i just think you have to give more credit if a coach that is retired gets voted for. some coaches have not been playing long enough to know who some of the greats *were*

or you could just opt to make it a list of active greats

It would be nice for Bugs to win the big one before he decides he might want to leave he was talking about leaving last season.

Not to pat myself on the back, but I actually have a seventh under a third ID that I barely use anymore......

Go ahead Dave, I really don't have the time. I'll submit a ballot though.

I would have definitely put those two on my list of twelve (Rails too), but I wasn't sure how many current coaches would remember them.

I might have a few Championships, but I'm not even in the same ballpark as most of the coaches being mentioned. I might consider myself a decent coach who has had some success, but I wouldn't ever consider myself to be anywhere near those guy's levels.

No offense to any other coach who was wasn't chosen. I probably forgot an obvious one or two, and limiting it to twelve was very difficult, but to me, these are the top of the line guys.

To answer question two, yes, I think certain coaches in this group would be more successful than others, but not in a dominating fashion.

Trying to think how many of these guys were in the Big SKy when I went 16-0 or in it three years later when I won the NT with Prairie VIew :)

Seriously though if I had to pick 12, not counting Plumpy (who is kind of like a pre-1900 baseball player now a Cap Anson so to speak) I think OR, LM, Billy, Rails and Old Dave have to be locks.

After that I think there have been some good nominations but some guys that are out I like a lot, Pottle, Sacfflgod, bkdries, Airjare, marmup, those guys all are/were extremely hard to oppose and really played top flight HD. It would be hard for me to not include them in a top 12.

I don't think he is top 12 but AceCards is an idiosyncratic favorite of mine. He has a very defined style and is just a machine season after season turning out teams that look so much like the last years model, very bobby knight imho.

To weigh in on one last subject it is MUCH harder to win d1 titles than d2 or d3 anybody that says otherwise is dreaming. I never won a d2 title but I could have won several (21/53 seasons sweet 16 or beyond) and I wasn't there that long, I've won 3 d3 titles and haven't played a ton of d3. In d1 it's just a whole different game. If you aren't bcs you can build up a good w-l record still, but it becomes very hard to win the tourney, if you are bsc heck it's just hard to win. All these guys on the lists we're making, they're in your conference. I'm not saying there aren't great d3 coaches, but there aren't conferences full of them and in the end it's just not nearly as difficult.

It's an honor to be included in this elite group. Thanks~

I'd give strong consideration to barjaz, too. He's going for his 6th title in Naismith tonight. His seven teams are currently 109-23 (83%).

You've definitely earned it Al. You give me fits with my Post team in Rupp, although I love playing your guys. I always know it'll be a tough matchup when we play.
