Was wondering what Epps was doing these days, that's interesting. I know he played overseas for a bit. If he and his buddy Masiello had stayed off the marijuana maybe he could have had a better professional career.

Another famous daughter; another upset.

Boone County, led by Randy Moss's daughter, upset #3 Bowling Green 48-44. Syndey Moss, a sophomore, scored 28 and pulled 16 rebounds. This was the first Sweet 16 for Bowling Green

The only small school in the Girls' Sweet 16, Murray High, fell to #4 Rockcastle County. With #1 Marion Co. and #3 Bowling Green already upset, Rockcastle is the highest ranked team remaining.

Murray H.S. shares a hometown with Murray St., the OVC champions

Not to diminish their accomplishments, but I guess I was envisioning the enrollment disparity to be greater. (I.E. in the Chicago area there are schools like Stevenson, Lane Tech, New Trier, etc. that have enrollments of 4,000+)

Of course on the whole I'd expect schools with an enrollment of 1,600 to field better teams than schools with an enrollment of 600, but I don't think it's that crazy for a couple of the 600's to at least be in the mix.

Having graduated from a school below 600 students, I can assure you that the scaling between 600 to 1800 is big. That's a 3x larger talent pool. At the starting squad it might mean only 1 player, but on the bench, it would have been the difference to me being in the stands heckling the other team vs. bruising my arse holding down a seat to the floor.

The next time you're recruiting, imagine if you could scout 15 states instead of just 5.

    • Rowan County and Rockcastle County are the people's choices. 1) Noone roots for the Louisville schools. 2) Scott County's boys team has been accused of questionable 'recruiting' from other schools over the years

    6 Louisville Mercy defeated #13 Scott County 71-61 to win their 2nd state title, the other coming in 1992. Mercy is an all-girl's parochial school and draws students from the entire Louisville area. They've won 20 individual or team titles in the last 15 years.

    11 of the last 12 tournaments have been won by teams from either Louisville or Lexington, the two largest cities in the Commonwealth. 9 of the winners were parochial schools.

    Is girls basketball followed in Kentucky... im not trying to be sexist or anything but in NJ it is pretty much ignored.

    It's definitely 2nd fiddle to the boys but it's growing. The 2009 state tournament drew 4,600/game for the girls which is held at Western Ky. Univ. (capacity 8,000). This was the 2nd largest attendance in history. The boys averaged 16,130 in Rupp Arena.

    The Kentucky boys started today.

    Rankings are according to the Litkenhaus ratings, from the Louisville Courier-Journal. In Kentucky, teams aren't seeded at the state tournament. Teams are matched by a blind draw.

    #5 Warren Central 55; #16 East Carter 36

    #2 Louisville Ballard 90; #7 Shelby County 80. This was the first time in Sweet 16 history that both teams hit at least 9 three-pointers.

    #4 Christian County 70; #8 Newport 51. Newport was the smallest school in the tournament. Christian County had lost in the opening round 7 consecutive times since 1983.

    #1 Scott County 68 #10 Corbin 49. Scott County's coach was at Corbin in the 90's. Corbin's current coach played for him then.

    Tomorrow:

    #9 West Jessamine vs. #11 Muhlenberg County (my alma mater is one of 7 schools that consolidated into Muhlenberg County)

    The four favorites advanced to Saturday morning's semi-finals. The winners meet Saturday night for the title.

    # 2 Louisville Ballard led #5 Warren Central 15-1 after one quarter. Warren Central was 0-9; 1-5 on free throws; and had 9 turnovers. They came back to tie the game at 59-59 only to lose 62-59 at the buzzer.
