And I almost took them for the same reason. Ended up with the Cubs instead because they were almost as unlucky and they were (lots) better (85-70 "should have been" 92-63). Nice rotation, too. We'll see if schwarze can use his extra round 1 and round 7 picks to make up the difference. Knowing schwarze, yes, yes he can.

sorry, I was really torn between two teams . . .

Atlanta Braves
4/14/2010 5:18 PM
The Philadelphia Steve Carltons

We need 2 more A.L. teams and 1 more N.L. team.

Truly not what I had planned looking at my options this afternoon but I will take the Chicago White Sox. I hope I don't regret not taking the Cardinals and the two extra picks.

The new rules make this part of the league (draft, team selection) much, much better . . .
4/14/2010 10:41 PM
6 draft picks can't fill Cards' holes at first, short, OF, and no bullpen (losing Alou, Maxvill, Hague, Drabowski, etc.)

My original plan was to take Texas so I could draft Carlton, and then watch Calhoop take Phillies.

I didn't expect the two top teams in the AL East to be available at this stage...

Since it would be too embarrassing to take Boston or Detroit and not win the division, ...

I'll go with the St. Louis Rick Wises

Actually I was naive enough to originally think that I would draft the Phillies to get Steve Carlton and then pick Gaylord Perry from the Indians with the first pick in the draft. And then pick up a closer and enough offense to be competitive. Both the Indians and Phillies gone before I had a chance to pick. These new rules sure created a different strategy.

I'll take the New York Yankees.

I didn't like the Phillies as a viable choice. They already have Carlton and still sucked. Their second best SP, Woodie Fryman, is a multi-team player who belongs to the Tigers. I won't even start with their pathetic offense. Is 8 picks enough?

seems like it'll take at least one leg, maybe two for us to figure out how valuable the extra picks are. case in point, the Phils getting picked and the Sox/Tigers getting on the table.
