Season 52 ODAC Preview

Guilford
metsmaniac2

Recruiting Review

Despite losing out on EMU-bound Ronald Graves, they did manage to pull in two good recruits, adding to the growing pool of talent down in Greensboro.  They brought in their #1 target, a PF from NC who is profiled below.  The second recruit, pursued after Graves was out of reach, is Joel Applewhite, a very athletic SF from VA, who will probably find himself playing both SF and PF.

Prized Recruit: Charles Mayo

Athleticism 39 Average   Perimeter 1 Low
Speed 23 High   Ball Handling 16 High
Rebounding 49 Average   Passing 19 High
Defense 43 High   Stamina 55 High
Shot Blocking 36 High   Durability 81 Average
Low-post 44 High   FT Shooting   High

Mayo was Guilford’s #1 target and he looks to be a good one.  While he is listed as a PF, he will probably find himself playing more SF at Guilford.  He may not be able to shoot, but a combo of good ath/spd/bh/p along with excellent defense and remarkable LP, Mayo looks like he’ll be a stud.

Season Preview

After taking a big step up last year, mets will try to get his team to break out his year and make the post-season.  They have a very solid starting line-up with a tandem of great big guys and two great shooters.  With only one senior they won’t be as good as next year, but I really like this team.

Prediction:  17-9 (11-5) PI

MVP: Thomas Darling

Recruiting Review

With four open spots, Bridgewater looked to Florida for three of their recruits.  Their first recruit from sunshine state is Robert Dangelo, a fantastic defense and rebounding big guy.  He has great athleticism at 67 (even if it has low potential) and high potential in REB, DE, and BLK.  Also, if he practices really hard, he’ll be able to make a lay-up by his senior year.  The next guy on the list is Jeremy Higgins, also from Florida.  Higgins has 60 WE and a lot of high potentials, but honestly I don’t see him doing much unless most of those high potentials are high-high (only lows are A and REB).  Raymond Scott, also a SG from Florida, looks much more promising.  Although he has similar ath/spd to Higgins, his other abilities make him much much better.  Scott could develop into a very good SG, but not a great one, probably ending up around 70 per, 60 BH and 65 P.  Bridgewater’s final recruit is Henry Jordan, the only local one.   He’s profiled below.

Prized Recruit: Henry Jordan

Athleticism 53 Average   Perimeter 1 High
Speed 21 High   Ball Handling 10 High
Rebounding 44 High   Passing 30 Average
Defense 52 High   Stamina 65 High
Shot Blocking 35 High   Durability 48 High
Low-post 20 Average   FT Shooting   High

I’m not a fan of the Bridgewater class, but Jordan is probably the best out of this group.  His combo of athleticism and speed along with his ability to play defense and rebound would make him a valuable on some of the best teams in the country.  The only problem is his lack of ability to score, but he’ll still be a very valuable asset.

Season Preview

They return 8 players, 7 of them upperclassmen.  They’ll be good, just not great.  The good news is they have some great rebounders, but the bad new is they only have two guys that can score.  This season will come down to how much production they get from guys that aren’t named Goncalves and Beagle

Prediction:  15-11 (10-6), borderline PI

Recruiting Review

They filled all three open spots with three excellent recruits.  Drawing from three of their bordering states, EMU’s first recruit is PG Jared Gosselin.  Gosselin will have a good ath/spd combo and he’ll be able to play good defense along with being a very intriguing offensive player.  He will end up with elite ball handling and although his passing looks pretty shabby right now, it will get to an acceptable level for a SG.  The most interesting part of Gosselin’s game will be his ability to score; he has 50 per with low potential, which is nothing special, but the 33 LP will serve him very well and I think he’ll be able score effectively.  Their second recruit is Christopher Eberly, a PF from KY, although I find it hard to believe he’ll see any time at PF with 5 SB and 1 LP.  He will be an ultra-athletic SF who will be able play great defense (50 high), score, and rebound.  Their final recruit was the highly sought after Ronald Graves, who is profiled below.

Prized Recruit: Ronald Graves

Athleticism 36 High   Perimeter 1 High
Speed 7 High   Ball Handling 24 Average
Rebounding 37 High   Passing 4 Average
Defense 38 High   Stamina 81 Low
Shot Blocking 25 High   Durability 72 Low
Low-post 72 Low   FT Shooting   Average

Ronald Graves finally decided to go to EMU instead of Guilford, completing a very good class for cat.  Graves was well worth the battle, as he’ll be a stud.  With high potential in athleticism, he should easily reach 60, and 70 if it’s high-high.  His athleticism, when mixed with the 72 LP, will make him a lethal force in the paint.  He may not be a great rebounder, but he’ll be good enough, and just like rebounding the defense will be good, but not great.

Season Preview

They made the NT last year and return 9, but they lost Howard Derezinski and the legendary Darrell Calhoun.  With only 2 seniors and 3 juniors, they won’t be fantastic, but with the talent they have on this team they’ll definitely win some games.

Prediction: 17-9 (10-6), PI/NT

No recruiting review because they return everybody.

Season Preview

After getting a 2 seed in the PI with no seniors, VWC returns everybody.  With 10 upperclassmen, they’ll be a force in the ODAC this year.  The combination of their team ath/spd along with their great IQs, it will be hard to see this team losing much this year.  They have all the right pieces to make a deep run this year and I fully expect them to.  They do lack elite stamina and rebounding, which will keep them from making a final four.

Prediction: 19-7 (14-2) with the #1 SOS, NT

Recruiting Review

We filled both of our ‘ships with quality big men.  The first guy is Ryan Onorato, a C from New Mexico.  Despite being mocked about him (flyers), I don’t see how a big guy that will end up with 40 ath, 100 reb, 95 SB, and 55 LP can be bad.  So he can’t dribble and he’s not fast, WHO CARES?  All he needs to do is stand under the basket, block shots, and rebound.  It looks like he’ll be really good at that.  My second recruit is an absolute gem, profiled below.

Prized Recruit: Christopher Mireles

Athleticism 15 High   Perimeter 1 Low
Speed 16 Low   Ball Handling 3 Average
Rebounding 53 High   Passing 26 Low
Defense 21 Average   Stamina 59 Average
Shot Blocking 46 High   Durability 56 High
Low-post 58 High   FT Shooting   High

Hailing from Poca, WV, this d2 pulldown will be an absolute beast.  You see the high potential in all the core categories, but what you don’t see is the scouting reports saying that he has high-high in Ath, Reb, and LP.  If we project out his ratings, he’ll have 45 ath, 85 reb, 70 SB, and an amazing 90 LP.  He is the only player in this conference class I can see winning multiple COPY awards, although my prediction is that he only wins it his senior year.

Season Preview

We return 10 and our only loss is a back-up PF from a team that really blossomed at the end of last year and won the PI.  It’d be hard to find a better big man tandem than Franqui and Christopher, plus we have sophomore Eugene Fisher coming in and rebounding off the bench.  It’d also be hard to find a better back-court than Hughey and Davis, although Davis may end up playing SF this season.  However the line-up shapes up, we’ll be fantastic this year.

Prediction: 22-4 (14-2) with a terrible SOS because I didn’t schedule hard enough.
MVP:
Michael Hughey

Randolph-Macon
pumphead

Recruiting Review

They filled both open scholarships with guys from VA  and their later signing was PF Harold Moorer.  Moorer will end up being pretty athletic and a solid big guy if he can reach his potential, but that may be in question with his 23 WE.  It definitely was slim pickings this year so I understand why pump would sign him, but I don’t think Moorer will do much with his collegiate career.  Their second recruit from VA, SF Daryl Allsop, is profiled below.

Prized Recruit: Daryl Allsop

Athleticism 68 Average   Perimeter 57 Low
Speed 38 High   Ball Handling 39 High
Rebounding 4 Average   Passing 24 Average
Defense 63 High   Stamina 70 High
Shot Blocking 1 High   Durability 49 High
Low-post 1 High   FT Shooting   ?

Allsop is a super-athletic SF who should end up with a fantastic ath/spd combo of 80/65 and he’ll be fantastic (90) defensively.  He won’t be an amazing scorer without any LP, but he’ll be putting up double digits per game soon enough, especially when his BH reaches its potential.

Season Preview

With no seniors, they won’t be great, but they will be decent.  After losing Poch, they don’t return many guys who score last year, but Wong and Cox will probably end up doing most of the scoring with Gordon adding around 10 a game.  Ish Knox should be good running the point and dishing these guys the ball and they should have good defense this year.  While they don’t have fantastic rebounding ratings, all of their bigs are very athletic, especially Swayze.

Prediction: 19-9 (11-5), NT
MVP:
Matthew Wong

Great write-up tk.  Only if I could have gotten Graves.  He and Mayo would have been a great class.  I'm looking foward to this season, I think we'll win our fair share of games but next year is the season I circled as the one to make a run.
12/2/2010 12:35 PM
Another great edition TK.  I'd wish I could argue with you that I'll win 20+, but (hopefully) I gave my schedule a much needed SOS boost.  Also, Moorer feeds off your skepticism. (j/k, he doesn't give a **** about basketball...). I think I'll be pretty competitive next season.

edit: saw that I didn't include Allsop's FT potential - it's high fwiw.

ODAC Season 53 Preview (Recruiting Review Only)

East Mennonite (#22 WIS)

Recruiting Review

Coach catjuggler seemed to take a different approach this year and went out and got three very high athleticism guys.  The first is a Hershey, PA product by the name of Dewitt Willis.  Dewitt could end up being a stud scorer, with the possibility of both his LP and Per getting over 70.  The only problem will be his inability to bounce a basketball.  Their next recruit is David Warren, another G/F, from North Carolina.  There is a chance that he could play PF down the road if his REB gets high enough.  Their final recruit, Mike Nugent, is profiled below.
Star of the Class: Mike Nugent
Athleticism 71 Average   Perimeter 34 High
Speed 29 Average   Ball Handling 17 High
Rebounding 24 Average   Passing 2 High
Defense 89 Average   Stamina 54 High
Shot Blocking 1 High   Durability 39 High
Low-post 34 High   FT Shooting   Average

Even though he can't pass the ball, Nugent will be a stud.  He will be very very athletic and his defense might reach 100, which will make EMU's zone that much more formidable.  Nugent will also be able to score; With such high athleticism and a great LP/Per combination he could really pour it in.  Overall, all three guys are going to be formidable players, but my biggest concern is that all of these guys basically play the same position.  None of these guys will reach 45 speed, so I don't see them playing SG.  Like I wrote earlier, I could see Willis playing PF eventually, but for the most part all of these guys play SF.

Guilford (#23 WIS)

Recruiting Review

After losing out on Roanoke-bound guard Steve Carr, Guilford picked up guard Jeffrey Young, profiled below.

Star of the Class:  Jeffrey Young

After initially thinking he was going to take a walk-on, mets must be happy to bring in Young.  He will be a very fast guard who will play good defense, but also be able to shoot and be a good passer.  Young will be a very good guard for Guilford who will probably be in the rotation this year.

Bridgewater

Recruiting Review

Their first recruit is Sam Decker, a guard from West Virginia.  He projects out as a solid combo guard, he won't blow anyone away, but he will be very solid.  The next recruit is forward from Arizona, Derrick Fried.  Fried is very athletic and projects out to be a very good defensive player.  He will probably end up playing SF.  Their third recruit is a high potential guard from Wailuku, Hawaii.  Raymond Horrell doesn't look great now, but with high potential in almost every area (except defense and rebounding) and a high work ethic, the not-so-high flyin' Hawaiian might be putting up some big numbers in the ODAC soon.  Their final recruit is James Lackey, profiled below.

Star of the Class: James Lackey

A rare local guy Bridgewater, the 6'11" Center will be a traditional ODAC Center, not very fast but athletic and can really rebound.  The Arlington, VA product should find himself in the rotation sooner rather than later and will be a much needed boost Bridgewater, who only have one rebounder better than 60 reb and he will be graduating this year.

Randolph-Macon (#3 TK, #2 WIS)

Recruiting Review-They did not recruit anybody

Roanoke (#6 TK, #7 WIS)

Recruiting Review

We brought in two guys to fill both our open 'ships, but it did take some battling.  Our first recruit is Joel Myers, a solid point guard from West Virginia.  With low perimeter potential, he won't be lighting it up from deep any time soon, but with high potential in speed and LP (passing and def too) he should be good at getting into the lane and finishing.  I'm pretty excited to see what Myers can do because he'll be the first ever LP dominated guard I've ever had and if he's good, he won't be the last.  Our second recruit is Steve Carr, profiled below.

Star of the Class: Steve Carr
(sorry no picture) Potentials: Ath-avg Spd-low Reb-avg Def-low SB-low LP-low Per-High BH-High P-High Stam-High
It took until the second day of signings to finally reel him in, but Carr made the right choice to come to Roanoke instead of Guilford.  Carr will never be very fast, but other than that it is hard to find a weakness in this guy's game.  He will be a complete guard on both ends; he'll be able to shoot, handle, and pass along with being a good defender.  He should see about 13-15 minutes this year as the back-up SG.

Washington and Lee

Recruiting Review-They signed nobody.

Washington and Jefferson

Recruiting Review

In his first ever class at W&J, the ODAC's newest coach pulled in what looks like a class that will set him up well.  Clearly headpirate is a coach with a very bright HD future.  WIth only 3 returning players, headpirate needed some non-freshman and he brought in three of them.  The first transfer is C Eric Colby, who comes in with only one year of eligibility.  Colby will be the best big man on W&J and should put up some decent stats and hopefully help them win a few games.  The next transfer is another big guy, PF Jim Whitby.  Whitby transfered from JUCO after only one season and has 3 years of eligibility remaining.  With 70 LP, he should be an effective scorer.  The final transfer is a guard by the name of Jim Canfield.  Canfield isn't your prototypical guard though; Canfield is not that fast or athletic, but he is a strong defensive presence and can really score inside.  He should be very solid the next 3 seasons for W&J.  HP also brought in 4 freshman (as well as 2 walkons), the first being guard Gregory Comfort.  Comfort is a product Saint Albans, WV, a school that has produced some of the best players in this area the past couple seasons (see Roanoke RS Senior Lynn Franqui and Chowan Senior Michael Strain, if there are anymore out there, and I know there are because I almost decided to do a whole recruiting class of 3 guys from Saint Albans, post them here, these are the two guys I know off the top of my head).  Comfort should be a pretty good for W&J throughout his career and project to be a pretty good combo guard.  Their next guard, who almost got star of the class, is Raymond Monson (there has been an influx of Raymonds into the ODAC this year).  Monson will be a very fast athletic guard who will be able to shoot and take it to the hoop.  He's a recruit that probably could have gone to an upper-level team and it is very impressive that W&J was able to land him.  Their third freshman is another PA product (like Monson) is Brandon Velasco, who will be redshirting this year.  Velasco will be an ultra-athletic rebounder who will inevitably be crashing the boards with star of the class Paul Sims, the star of the class, profiled below.

Star of the Class: Paul Sims

Sims is almost the same player as Velasco, but with slightly high Defense and Shot Blocking.  Both will be very athletic (probably around 75 ath each) with very high rebounding (80+ each).  In 4 seasons, these two guys might be the two best rebounders in the ODAC, which means HP did a ridiculously good job recruiting.  It will be very exciting to see how Sims (and Velasco) will turn out.

Virginia Wesleyan

Recruiting Review

After last year's 33-2 season udm_mike had 6 players graduate.  To keep VWC competitive mike had to bring in a great class and did he ever.  The all-North Carolina class looks very impressive.  Their first recruit is Stevie Stuart from Monroe, NC.  Stuart obviously was not one of the focal points of this class, but he will be able to contribute down the line at PF when his ath, spd, and reb all fulfill their high potentials.  Their second recruit is Isaac Brooks, who might end up playing both SF and PF.  He won't be able to score much, but he'll be fast (high potential) and athletic (low potential) and he will have 95+ stamina, which is always a huge bonus for the press.  Their next recruit is SF Richard Wickham, who will probably be a good SF.  He doesn't have killer stamina, but he does have high potential in ATH, REB, PER, and BH which always makes for a good player.  Recruit #4 is Michael Thompson, who will be a good SG with high potential in SPD, DEF, PER, BH and the all-important stamina.  Recruit #5, Robert Buser, is very interesting.  Buser won't be a great shooter (33 low), but he should be able to score very effectively because of his high potential in LP, SPD, BH, and P.  He also has high potential in stamina, which is already at 79, which means he will definitely get to 99.  Their last recruit is Scott Dennis, profiled below.

Star of the Class: Scott Dennis

Dennis was obviously the gem of the region.  After I threw about 2k at him, he was snapped up by Greensboro, the best d3 program in the country.  Then VWC creeped in and took revenge on Greensboro for inflicting both losses on a season where VWC might have been the best team by throwing piles of money at Dennis.  Dennis will probably end up being CPOY and will definitely be the focal point of VWC's offense for the three years following this one.  He will score a boatload of points.  The picture above says it all.

1/5/2011 9:35 PM
Good review, as always.  I think you're wrong about Brooks though...I don't think FB players need LP or PER to be good scorers if their speed/ath are high enough.  I'll be putting that to the test with Dunkel next season.  Hopefully my theory pans out  :-p
1/6/2011 9:54 AM
This a great thread. It's fun to read and gives me a gauge of my recruits for all my D3 teams :)

Another great writeup tk. Much appreciated.

TOP 5 ODAC RECRUITS:

#1-Joseph Phillips, Roanoke, PG

I hate to put my own guy at #1, but in my conversations with other coaches it appears that he is just a remarkable recruit and I got very lucky.  With high/high potential in SPD, PER, BH, and PASS, he should be a monster PG and he might even start from day 1 to speed up his development.  I don’t really like either of my young guards so they might find themselves backing up a true freshman this year.#2-James Alberty, Lynchburg, SG

A tremendous combination of ATH/SPD along with what will be very good perimeter skills and you throw in very good defense and you have yourself a James Alberty, the leader of the best class Lynchburg has ever brought in and hopefully the leader of the Lynchburg class that will win its first NT game ever.

#3-Ben Kelly, Roanoke, SF

Ben Kelly will be the key part of my 2-3 zone experiment.  His tremendous athletic ability will hopefully (but not probably) reach triple digits and go along with what will be ~50 speed.  His perimeter skills should be decent with hopefully >50 BH/P to go along with high/high potential in PER.  He will also be a great defender, who should hit 95 DEF.  With such high athleticism, he should be able to do everything well and will hopefully a force by his sophomore year.

#4-Robert Antone, Emory and Henry, C

If you scouted PA, shame on you, because, according to Ben, he was signed for a whopping $150.  His combination of ATH/REB/DEF/SB/LP makes him the best big guy in this class.  No doubt, he will start from day 1 and be a force for years to come.

#5-Howard Featherston, Emory and Henry, SG

Featherston comes in as basically a poor man’s James Alberty.  With roughly the same ATH/SPD combo, he will be a better defender than Alberty and a great fit in coach benwf’s press.  His perimeter skills aren’t what Alberty’s are, but he should be effective enough on the perimeter with a good BH/P combo and alright PER.  I foresee him winning ODAC DPOY at least once and maybe twice.

Despite it looking like a down year for mid-Atlantic talent, the ODAC managed to bring probably the most talent I’ve ever seen come into the conference as a whole.  Let’s just say the conference got a whole lot more athletic this offseason.  As a conference we drew a lot more from PA than normal.  Overall, here’s the breakdown of recruits per state: NC-11, PA-10, WV-5, VA-5, MD-2, CO-2, 1: SD, HI, MI, ND, KY, OK, OH, MN, AL, NE.

ODAC RECRUITING REVIEW: SEASON 53-THE YEAR OF THE ODAC

Note: the Recruiting Grade is in relation to your prestige.  If a C- prestige and an A+ team brought in the same class, the C- team would have a much better grade.

Bridgewater
bjken3

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary:  Per his usual style, bjken brought in two guys from far away with Chris Sproles coming in from Hawaii and Churchill from South Dakota.  Sproles will certainly need some development, but he could end up being decent.  Not sure where the Hoff will ever fit in, but with a decent amount of high potential and a great WE, he could contribute down the line.  Churchill will be a good PG for sure.  His WE is bad, but a 80/70/70 PG who can shoot is obviously very valuable.

Recruiting Grade: B-

East Mennonite
catjuggler23

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: Taking a slightly different approach this year, catjuggler reached out to Colorado for McKimley and Lawler.  Lawler’s high WE is impressive, and he will have pretty decent perimeter skills, but he’s not a great defender and won’t be very fast.  He’s not a good rebounder, so I don’t know if he’ll be able to play SF.  Not really sure where he fits into a team.  Lawler looks like a decent but not great big.  Kenny Brown looks like he could be a very athletic player as a PF or maybe an SF in a 2-3 zone, but his rebounding is a little low to play PF and he’s a little slow to play SF not to mention his 37 stamina.  It’s possible he could be a good player down the line, but he needs a lot of development.  Eventually, I think he’ll be a SF.

Recruiting Grade: C-

Emory and Henry
benwf

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: With a C- prestige and so many good humans around him, I’m shocked at the class ben pulled in.  Not only did he fill all of his 9 open scholarships, he filled them with high quality players, including the #4 and #5 best recruits in Antone and Featherston, although Dolinsky and Pitzer also look like stud Gs.  E&H definitely has a bright future with so many players that will have great athleticism and speed, not to mention defense.  Only thing to look for next year will be another couple bigs, but as for a first class, this is pretty awesome.  Looks like we have our next team that’s going to rise to power house level.

Recruiting Grade: A+

Guilford
metsmaniac2

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: Guilford brought in four good recruits this year, all of whom will be very solid contributors down the line.  McGahee will be decent and Cummings will be better.  Cummings could be a very solid PG if those BH and P are high-high potentials.  Dobbs looks like a very solid big and Patten (who was won in a battle with conference mate khook’s Bethany team) will be an absolute monster on defense and could be an effective offensive player with his great athleticism.

Recruiting Grade: B

Lynchburg
chichisteve

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary:  A big contributor to the crazy amount of talent coming into the ODAC this year, chichisteve did a great job finding 6 talented freshmen.  James Alberty comes in as the 2nd best recruit in the entire conference this year.  Alberty’s crazy combination of athleticism and speed is impressive by itself, but coupled with his defense and perimeter skills, not to mention his stamina and his FT grade, makes him a crazy good recruit.  I’m scared of what Alberty will be able to do and I’m just glad I’ll only have to see him twice a year.  As I’m sure you can see, the rest of these recruits are also pretty great.

Recruiting Grade: A+

Bethany
khook19

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: Similar to benwf’s E&H class, it appears khook put a great emphasis on ath/spd with no low potentials in either of those areas (and only 2 average).  Denson should develop into a pretty good SF if his WE allows him to reach his potential.  Evans is another guy who could be great, but again the WE might prevent him from getting there.  Early playing time could be the cure for these guys, but whether or not khook wants to give his freshmen any playing time is a big question.  Girton will also develop into a very good SF, he’s a guy who won’t be great at anything, but be good at everything.  Prentice will be a very good rebounder and a solid all around player.

Recruiting Grade: B+

Washington & Jefferson
headpirate

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: He didn’t quite fill all of his scholarships, but HP did bring insome pretty good recruits.  Jackson and Levin project as pretty good guards and Smith looks like he’ll become a very good SF.  The main problem with this entire class is that none of these guys have a WE over 26, which isn’t too great.  If these guys can reach their potentials, it will turn out to be a very productive class.  Unfortunately, they probably won’t get there.

Recruiting Grade: B-

Randolph-Macon
pumphead

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: Unlike some of the other classes that had WE problems, pump didn’t take a guy with lower than a 41 WE.  Although they didn’t have a guy in the top 5 recruits, they brought in a lot of very talented guys.  Joseph Smith might be the best example of this; he’ll be an excellent guard who will be able to score very well.  Big men Gore, Warrington, and Parker all look like the traditional great rebounders often found in the ODAC West.  Games will also be a pretty good Guard, although not quite at the Smith level.  Gammons looks like he will be a good SF for their 2-3 zone.

Recruiting Grade: A-

Roanoke
tkimble

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: In my opinion, this is my best recruiting class in a long time for Roanoke.  We haven’t quite been as good as I’d like lately and the next two seasons don’t look too promising either.  Hopefully this class will be the one to lead us back to A+ prestige and hopefully a title.  We’ll start with Joseph Philips, the #1 recruit coming into the ODAC this year.  With high-high potential in SPD, PER, BH, and P, he’ll be a fantastic and hopefully historically great PG.  Then there is Ben Kelly, who I rated as the #3 recruit.  This was probably based on my bias, but whenever I see a guy who could reach 100 ATH at d3 with good skills in other categories, I’m probably going to rate him high.  He’s going to be the key to my future 2-3 zone, which I hope will be shut down.  Kindred will definitely take zone development and probably won’t see the floor, but he will also be instrumental in my plan down the road.  I’m still trying to decide whether he or Hsu will redshirt.  Hsu and Wallace both project out to be very good bigs.

Recruiting Grade: A

Virginia Wesleyan
udm_mike

Recruits:

Recruit Commentary: Mike could have benefited from some of the other ATH/SPD guys coming into the conference choosing VWC, but these guys are pretty good too.  I took a long look at Bowker and I think he’ll make a good SF down the line, although if his REB gets high enough he might be an effective PF in the FB/Press.  Damien Johnson will be speedster who will definitely score in this system.  Kurz’s ATH might be a little low for a FB/Press, but he will be able to rebound and handles the ball pretty well for a big guy, which could be big in this system.  LT is probably their best recruit, I see him being a starter at PG for VWC.

Recruiting Grade: B

Additional Notes: H-S did not have any open ‘ships and I don’t have any workable info from W&L.

2/5/2011 10:46 PM
It's as if you read my mind, tk.  I see Bowker as a pf eventually and I'm redshirting Kurz to get his high potential speed up to a usable level before he sees the court.
2/5/2011 11:28 PM

As always, great job, tk.

Cummings is a High-High in BH, Passing, PER, and LP.  I have high hopes for him down the line into a big time scorer.

Mcgahee will be a lot better then he looks, as he is a high-high in Ath, Per, BH.  Those are his three weakest area's so I think by his junior and senior season I'll have a nice SG develop.

Patten is a High-High in DEF, and PER. he could be high-high in BH but I don't know, I wasn't "lucky" enough to get that in a response for the scouting visits.  But expect to him to stick to your guards like glue :).

nice work tk, and grade seems about right -- solid but nothing spectacular. despite WE I have hope for SF A Smith developing into a close to spectacular player. he took the RS and I think i can get him into the starting line-up next season.

Great review. Glad you picked up on Gammons SF intentions. I passed on some other players to get back to the rebounding and blocking needed for my switch to full time zone, but I think it will work out well.  I'll need another good class next season to complement this one, but I'm optimistic about R-M's future.

Ben really did an amazing job; I'm not sure I've seen something as impressive and challenging as what he accomplished.
