The reason why I brought Kirby up was because of the title of the thread "automatic HOF milestones".  A number of folks say 600 HR's should be an automatic HOF vote.  Then they look at Kirby and say "oh, but maybe not for him".

Maybe people should stop thinking in terms of "automatic" milestones.

The general point is that most owners who say "oh, but maybe not for him" look at that 5 contact and mediocre splits and discount the fact that he hit 622HRs over his career (and he is still #5 all-time in Mantle which is now in S19).  I don't care either way if Kirby makes it but I get annoyed by the discounting of early players based on now-undesirable ratings that color their accomplishments.

I didn't look at his ratings(or his card).  But, if he couldn't win some sort of award, he wasn't the best in any year of his career.

I think Kirby is a perfect example of "well, what were his peers up to?" ...meaning that maybe his 622 isn't so impressive when compared to the world.

5th all-time is pretty decent, but how many ahead of him are active?

Will you get off Cambridge. He deserves the middle finger he's getting in MG.

Good player, not a HOFer. And the argument that you played him at 2B his whole career when he didn't belong there doesn't count.

How does a guy with career totals at 2B of 25 + plays, only 8 - plays, and a .983 fielding % not belong there? With those numbers, I would expect him to have been at least in the upper half, if not upper third, of fielding 2Bs in that world.
