Crazy, I'm glad McCovey worked out for you.  It apparently was one of those situations where patience was indeed a virtue.  However, on the other hand, we should respect the way other owners choose to play their teams, as its not a matter of them being right or wrong. It's whatever works and is successful for that particular owne.  You obviously practice patience and you stand by the guys you draft regardless of their production.  And if that's what works for you, then great. But others go about winning in different ways, and a great example of this is Grizzly.  He does what's succesful for him.   Mine happens to be making changes whenever I feel that certain changes should be made. Besides, I don't think I have the winning pct. that I have by making irresponsible WW moves.

I'll drop any player that has an 0-fer game. AND GUESS WHAT??!!! I HAVE A 100% SUCCESS RATE OF THE NEW GUY DOING AS GOOD OR BETTER!!!!!!11 How can you argue with 100%???
That's really not much of an exaggeration if you look at crimsonblue's moves.  1946 Hank Greenberg and 1966 Harmon Killebrew were dropped after 14 games, 1980 Ron Leflore after 12, 2000 Jose Vidro and 1995 Robin Ventura after 8, 2004 Placido Polanco after 7, 2007 Chone Figgins after 5, 2000 Omar Vizquel after 4 -- these are all full-time players, not scrubs.  As for pitching, 1918 Fred Toney was let go after 11 innings, 1918 Jake Northrop after 4, 1986 Rob Murphy after 4, 1915 Tim McCabe after 3, etc.

mixtroy: I respect every owner's right to run his team however he sees fit.  But saying someone has a good record because of WW moves -- esp. when those moves are made in the belief that the players being dumped are "bad versions" -- is like a 100-year-old man crediting his longevity to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.  Did he live so long because of the cigarettes, or in spite of them?

Ha.  You get a thumbs up for the Trenton-Joe/Trent-on-Joe comment.

I always used to think Bootone was Boo-tone rather than Boot-one.  Which makes me wonder whether I've been misinterpreting Boogerlips as Booger-lips when, in fact, it is really Boog-erlips.

And bright boy here (that would be me) just figured out a few days ago that Uncleal was Uncle-Al rather than Un-cleal.

I believe you could build a whole dictionary around Zubinsum.  Some examples --

Zubinsummary (n.)  A collection of pithy Zubinsum posts  Alt. A school of thought, a mind set or a way of looking at the world.  A Persian variation of the German weltanschuung

Zubinsumatra (n.) A particularly volcanic state of mind, often brought on by fundamental misunderstandings of the SIM algorithms.

Zubinsummarily (adv.) Arbitrarily dismissing fallacious interpretations of Persian mathematics.

Zu-bin-sum (n.) A Middle Eastern breakfast tradition that inspired the Chinese Zu dim sun, shorthanded over time to simply dim sum

And, last but not least --

Zubinsumo (n.)  Particularly rigorous mental calisthenics expended while trying to apply logic and common sense to some of the SIM's more arbitrary outcomes.  Colloq., literally, "a great mind wrestling".

Done now.

T.H. Under

.

Kinda funny actually.  I am honored.

The "bad versions" line was more for mixtroy and others who believe such creatures exist (we've had these discussions before).

As for Joss vs. Steele there's not such a big difference in their #'s (ERC# 1.61 vs. 1.82, WHIP .90 vs. .93, etc. with edges to Joss) so while I would've stuck with Joss (or "failed to manage that decision" as you sweetly put it), I don't think it's rolling the dice to go with Steele.

I'm curious to know what you would have done if you'd had available a pitcher like 2005 Josh Towers, and he'd just pitched 3 consecutive shutouts for you -- would you have started him over a "slumping" Joss?  Or would you have "failed to manage" and started Joss (as a sane person would)?

By the way, believing in "trends" is pretty much the same as believing in bad (and good) versions of players.  The only difference seems to be that you think the trends can start and stop during the season, whereas the bad version/good version conspiracists think it lasts all season.

This is getting interesting. lol  As far as I'm concerned, its not so much  that a particular underperforming player is a "bad version", but more in regard to what he's GIVING me in conjunction with what I believe he SHOULD be giving me.  Hell, I once even TRADED 08 Joss (at the deadline) who wasn't living up to his history (he had a losing record and an almost 4.00 ERA) and while my team was bumping along inconsitently and in second place.  I traded him for Koufax who produced a sub 2.00 ERA for me and I ended up winning the division.  lol The only thing I'm saying is that SOMETIMES you have to take a chance and make a move or risk not making the playoffs.

I definitely agree with your basic concept Crimson, because unlike a progressive team, OL teams are about winning NOW, in that particular season. And as the owner, manager and GM, you have to do whatever you feel that needs to be done in order to improve an otherwise lackluster tea, because standing pat and waiting for a supposed superstar's "random" super stats to kick in when they haven't for 3/4 of the season is a great way to miss the playoffs.  But that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.  Nonetheless, but as a fellow member here on WIS, whether we agree with the way other owners manage their teams or not, I think we should at least respect the strategies that others choose in manage their teams. So with that being said...I'm done on the issue.

To the people that don't realize it, this is called managing, this is called coaching.

Thanks for the lesson, Teach!

By the way, you never answered my question about who you'd start in a hypothetical game 7 -- a "hot" Josh Towers or a "cold" Addie Joss.  Any words of wisdom would be appreciated...

Oh yeah, George gives you pretty good production for his cost.  He's like two of my other sleepers - Randy Gumpert and Jim Moroney.  Their raw numbers don't look like much, and definitely leave a lot to be desired.  But the routinely outperform those numbers.

if your team after your "waiver wire use" was so great, field that team in an OL from the start and see where it gets you.  if you win the world series then, think about all the bragging you could do:  "I fielded an OL team using only $70 million and I won the world series.  I'm hoping people will share experiences about $70 million teams."

I can't speak for crimsonblue, of course, but knowing him as I do I believe I can safely say that CRIMSONBLUE ACCEPTS THIS CHALLENGE!  His $70M team will be entered in an OL within the next 3 days.

Get ready to witness some REAL managin', boys!
