D1 must really be tough Topic

"My lack of interest in D1 probably has equal parts "not ready yet" and "BCS or nothing" to it.  If I can't reasonably expect to compete for a championship after enough seasons of building, why bother?"

Ethan - Because it's fun.  My old Miss Valley State team (Tark) is still one of the funnest teams I've coached.  There's something to be said for finding a nice group of conference mates (admittedly usually a small group) and making a mini run in the tourny with Cindarella U.  And a little bit of success in low D1 helps you get that BCS school that much easier.
Dammit, Tianyi already lured me to switching my D3 team.  GET THEE BEHIND ME! :)

It'll be a while, yet.  I'm having a blast with my ACU team.  My conference picked up a couple of new coaches this season and it's shaping up to only get better.  Maybe after I make a couple of Final Four runs.

Care to post the rating and potential of the player you are talking about. 32 def if high-high could be very useful if other attributes are right.

lol I don't have a D1 team anymore.  Do what you will.  Just throwing it out there that it can be very fun to be in low D1.  Low expectations means more pleasant surprises.  Yes, it does suck that there's almost no chance of establishing a bottom tier school/conference as a powerhouse.  But as long as you go into it being ok with that, it can be a blast.

I don't know his potentials - not a state I scouted, so it's possible he has a lot of high-highs.  But if I was poking around looking for guys to target for my D2 team, he would not jump off the page and make me want to spend money scouting him.

He ultimately signed with a D2 team after the D1 coach dropped him.

really? you wouldn't want to sign this guy if his ath/reb are high? He looks pretty studly. High ath with high-high def means you get a bigman who 75 ath (more if ath is high-high), 90+reb, 60+def. That's a quality big to grab boards. If lp is high high, he can even score in bunches too.

Lots of "ifs" there, Tianyi.  I'm not disagreeing with you, but my own perspective is that I could get equal or better players in my own state without having to reach too far.

The key to keep in mind is budget.  I would think the $1700 to scout the state of Texas isn't quite as big a deal to D1 teams.  For me, that initial cost often limits what else I can look at.  If I were a D3 team in the state, that's over half of one scholarship allowance.

A d1 team jumped on him, obviously this guy has alot of highs or the D1 team wouldn't have jump in (nor would a D2 team with A prestige recruit him). I don't see anything wrong with this being a D1 recruit; heck, the big I signed this season really isn't better than this guy.

If that guy has averages even everywhere and a high in LP and Def he is a solid low D1 player.

Ok, I guess I've been looking at too many BCS rosters.  I obviously have an inflated idea of what D1 teams are looking for.

This thread has been an education for me, even if I am wrong :)

Yeah look at the rosters of the Ivy League.  If a Big 6 team is fighting with a D2 school that's usually a mistake, but a D/D+ prestige team might be targeting similar players to an A/A+ D2 school.

Looks like a big I'd sign on my C+ div I team.
