Relief pitcher - how to get him on track? Topic

Check the box scores through the game log.  He usually gets through an inning-plus just fine.  He did get shelled for 7 runs in one short outing, but it seems the deeper he goes, the more he gets hit.

I think that guys with only two pitches (unless they are both HUGE) almost always underperform.
Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Tyreace James
and
Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jerry Crosby

are both guys with two pitches who perform great.  Crosby had a down season last season, but both guys give 150-200 quality innings.

BTW I use them as Tandem Bs and run 'em out pretty much every other day.

94/44 dur stam....it warms my heart to see you on pace for 200 IP. bump him up to 50 PC, he can take it. You can get 250 IP out of him.

People will differ in opinion here, but....hunt other people minors until you find a catcher with min 75/75 arm accuracy and strength and min 87 PC. You'll get him for a song and your pitchers will thank you.
Willie Valenzuela. Him. Learn to tolerate OPS in the mid .500s if you can get his ratings.
Gotta disagree with this. Find a thumping bat capable of .875 OPS and AS/AA/PC in the 60s. Your pitchers will thank you for the run support. I would be hard pressed to tolerate a mid-.500s OPS from any position. Gotta score a few to win.
Unless that catcher can drive in 81 more runs than this guy, gotta disagree.

Because, that's the difference between a 50 and 85 PC, on average. IMO.

That's an all encompassing statement that might be hard to quantify.    I've been using Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Orlando Bonilla as my D-Replacement and VL catcher for 5+ seasons.  My other catchers have been mid 60s PC.    He's consistently had a .3-.4 better CERA in those seasons.   Had he been used all 162 games, that's 48-65 earned runs less.   That's nothing to sneeze at but the 88 PC guy has to hit a little in order to make up those runs.    Bonilla's RC27 is so much lower than my other options that I can't justify using him more.

FWIW, the ol' .012 CERA for each PC point still seems to apply pretty well.

Did I say 50?  I said in the 60s.  Also, there are more ways to contribute to offense than driving in runs.  The high OPS guy will drive in more, but also score more, help create more runs by keeping rallies alive, moving runners, etc.

And yes, I would think that the .300+ points of OPS between the guy I'm looking for and the guy you're looking for is worth considerably more than the difference in runs allowed.  Junior Rincon is pretty much exactly what I'd be looking for in a Catcher.

Don't you have sort of a reputation for always having just about the lowest team ERA going, and still not winning because you can't score runs?  You gotta score runs somewhere.  I'd much rather focus on defense at SS, and maybe CF/2B, and find some slug from behind the plate.

With a 60, 60 runs created. If you find it, good on ya, good advice.

Don't you have a reputation for being a jackass? If so, I can see why.

Oh, you and your Canadian comedy!

It's actually one of the good things about the game.    Some people value certain things, others value you different things.

If everyone could build a team of All-Stars, the game would suck.   As it is, and this is a good example, some people want Mike Piazza behind the plate while others take Francisco Cervalli.

He's a good reliever, but in Detroit you're better off getting FB pitchers. Also make sure your infield defense is solid.

Mike is right, it's a good game because questions like this cannot be answered.  I don't think anyone has really figured out whether a catcher that hits well is the way to go or a High PC catcher is the way to go.  Of course if you can find a catcher with a PC over 80 and he also can hit, your good to go.  The closest I have come is my guy Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Ron Corino.  I led the world in both offense and defense and pitching most of the last season.  Catching is the one position where I am still waiting to see the perfect storm player.  I have seen some pretty good catchers....but have yet to see the guy that makes me want to kill to own him.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Pete Wolf in his prime was the best catcher I've seen.   70+ across the board defensively with 25-30 homers and a .300 BA/.900 OPS.

i think that splits and control are more important than his pitch ratings (thats obviously debatable).  his pitch ratings of 85 and 73 are still very good.  i dont think you need a pitch in 90s to be an effective pitcher. there are some RP with 3 pitches but it's more common for RP with 2 pitches. all that being said, keep sending him out and over a season, things will even out.
