Wichita State assistant Steve Forbes has emerged as the leading candidate for thejob as head basketball coach at East Tennessee State University.
Forbes, a former assistant under Bruce Pearl at Tennessee, reportedly met with ETSU Athletic Director Richard Sander last week. Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall, who has turned out five Division I head coaches from his staffs, was said to have given a glowing recommendation for Forbes.
Sander said Saturday he was still considering “three or four” coaches to replace the fired Murry Bartow.
“I can’t comment on who those guys are,” Sander said. “It’s really not fair to anybody if they’re still playing. I don’t want to distract them from their current situation, so we kind of have to take that into consideration and deal with it accordingly.”
“I talked to Anthony Grant (fired Alabama coach) and he said to me ‘I’d love to work with you.’ But right now, it’s just not the right time. Realistically, the timing doesn’t work for AG right now.”
Grant was making $1.9 million annually at Alabama and has a buyout worth $4 million, which decreases if he takes another job.
Forbes spent five seasons at Tennessee, coaching under Pearl. Forbes was also part of the staff when Pearl was fired for lying to the NCAA.
When Pearl was fired, his assistants got the boot as well in addition to a one-year “show cause” penalty for “not being forthcoming,” according to the NCAA. That made it difficult, if not impossible, to get hired at an NCAA school.
Forbes wound up as the head coach of a junior college, Northwest Florida State, for two years. His teams went 61-6.
In 2013, Forbes was hired at Wichita State.
