The OT: Why do you HD? Topic

Over the last 15 years HD has been the one constant in my life. From deaths, breakups, children being born, new jobs...I can always count on HD to be the one aspect of my life that I can count on for both entertainment and to keep my brain active. I have won 5 nattys but my favorite is with my alma mater, the lowly D1 UTSA Roadrunners.

Nice man! I'm also a fellow Roadrunner. In fact, I just took over UTSA in Phelan.

Cool thread, started back in 2003 (god Im old, 45) as a friend told me about sim baseball. Was hooked and then joined up with HBD when it first came to the site, played that a TON and was obsessed but eventually burned out of that and gravitated towards HD since I love college hoops (Maryland fan, go Gary Williams) but new very little about coaching it. Sucked at HD for a bit (still kind of do) but loved the challenge and competing against other coaches, and through both HD and HBD made some really good friends along the way that like to chat about the game and other things in life.

And yeah, like others its frustrating as hell sometimes (will never understand FT's, when to choose a tempo, and distribution) but it keeps my brain active, and popping up the pbp to read through is super fun!

Apparently I've been playing HD since around 2005 or so. I have zero recollection of how or why I joined, but I do remember working the night shift at the front desk of a hotel in my early 20's and spending a bunch of time messing around with HD.

I've taken some long breaks between then and now, and I really only started to take this game seriously for the past 2-3 years. Finally got my 1st championship and then was hired at my 1st A+ baseline school, which were huge goals for me. I love the competitiveness and comradery. While there's a lot of randomness, I also feel like the game rewards those who truly put in the effort to master it.

I'll probably always keep at least 1 or 2 teams in HD, even as life has gotten much busier with work and family.

I joined around the time 2K Sports announced they wouldn't be making any new College Hoops 2K games. I was looking for a way to get my virtual college basketball hunger satiated. Landed on HD back in mid-2008 when I was in high school and have only left a couple times since then. I've flirted with other games (everything from Cyberdunk to Fast Break College Basketball, etc.) but something about how HD plays out and all the other coaches involved scratched the right itch.

I'm currently in a bit of a dip but it's mainly two-fold - 1) my career has taken off a bit and I've had less time to check in on HD and 2) I've formed a new addiction to Football Manager (which, believe it or not, I wasn't even a major fan of the sport until ~3-4 years ago but PES and FIFA just couldn't scratch my itch/weren't deep enough sim-wise).

I don't think I'll be leaving any time soon though and outside me forgetting to renew (oops) I pretty much see myself staying at DePauw in Knight until the sun don't shine no more for HD or for me, whichever comes first.

This whole thread is awesome. I joined 6-7 years ago for the first time I think. I didn't know I was supposed to read the forums, recruited D3 recruits and realized my mistake several seasons later. Got frustrated over it and quit. A few years later I got the itch to play again and this time read every thing I could find!

I still play D3 and find it very enjoyable. I love being in the NT every year, whether it's because I have a contender that year or I'm just trying to upset somebody. I'm still without a title but have been to the F4 a few times and the championship game a few times. My goal for a while has been to win the NT with Man/Triangle and then start trying out other offensive/defensive sets... I'm in the elite 8 right now with USCG in Crum and am hoping I can finally close the deal! If not though, I think I'll start playing other sets anyway to switch things up. Still love this game!
Your USCG team is loaded and I am scared to play you tonight. I'm looking for the "unplug the shot clock and hold the ball" option in gameplan settings.
I have had a couple teams that were loaded like this before and I couldn't close the deal in the championship game so I'm not counting my chickens yet... but I do love this team! I haven't game planned for you yet... but being that you're in the F4, I know your team is legit. Good luck!

I started in 2006. I actually found the site because of the sim matchup feature and only got into HD because I was waiting for a world to open up in GD (which I never played more than 1 season). I've been burnt out and back in multiple times. A few championships at DIII and DII. The current status is mostly just going through the motions at this point though without completely neglecting my teams. The release of 3.0 pretty much ended it for me and it's not success related as I've won more titles under 3.0 than prior versions. Recruiting is just more work than fun for me at this point. I'm pretty much chasing a DI title now to have 1 at each level and if not for the credits basically paying for my seasons, I'd have already left.

I joined HD in 2009 when I was still in junior high after being into March madness for years and loving simulation versions and features of sports games (anyone else remember NFL Head Coach?). I got lucky with my first D3 school, Menlo, having some really great talent and had some early success which I then took to move up to D2 before summer hit and I fell away until college when I decided to give it another go.

Since then, I’ve taken a couple of breaks away, but have been playing consistently for the past…five(?) years or so with fairly good success at a number of D1 schools, though my first national championship remains elusive.

While a couple of times losing teams due to renewal issues almost had me leave, and did drop me down to a single team from two at one point, I’ve now found a great home in the MEAC conference in Tark, and can’t imagine coaching anywhere else at this point. The competition level, camaraderie, and engagement of the whole conference, and the opportunity to play against some pretty storied coaches, just made the game take on a whole new level to me. I don’t know how long it’ll be before I finally nab that championship at Morgan State, but I have a feeling I’ll be there until I do.
