My guess his actual purpose here is to "market" for Diamond Mind. Not going to guess reason but logically if you already found what you felt was the perfect site for you, how much time would you actually spend on another site complaining about it without bothering to or apparently even wanting to understand how to use it.

Just my initial thoughts, not worth more than that.
Same thing crossed my mind.

But in case I'm wrong...yes, this site simulates baseball differently than other sites. I think one of the drawing points is the normalization that attempts to put players from all eras on an even playing field to answer "What if" these players from wildly different eras of baseball were together on the same field.

Try out the unique approach this site has to offer. Play a few full-season teams. Maybe you'll find you like it more in the long run. Maybe you won't. But that's one of the great things about our free market - you can spend your money wherever you like and ignore the things you don't care for. I don't see the benefit in bad-mouthing what others like to do when you can just take your money elsewhere and let everyone enjoy what they enjoy.

This was posted in another thread- but just in case this one is visited (and assuming positive intention and that the OP actually wants to learn about this game):

You might want to look at page 6 of this thread, which has a lot of helpful information:

The 10 game exhibition season likely has limited settings and stats. Idk if injuries occur in them but they do in open leagues and theme leagues that allow it (creators can turn injuries on or off).

a lot of what you’re complaining doesn’t exist here, you just havent discovered yet. Fielders have defense and range ratings, catchers have arm ratings, you just gotta play around more.

I’m not gonna force anyone to spend more time on this site than they want too, but this site offers more individual and creative team building. You can play different era themes, you can play mixed era themes, there’s a very in-depth code that attempts to normalize different eras.
What is the difference between a defense" rating and a "range" rating. If a "defense" rating is fielding pct., why is it expressed with a letter grade rather than a numerical rating?

Are you saying that I can play a 19th century league that will produce 19th century numbers like infielders making 85 errors and pitchers going 543 innings?

OP may be a lost cause, but let's try to be helpful and not discourage other newer players from posting here.
He's not exactly a "newer" member here. The account he's posting from was created 14 years ago.

Still hasn't bought a full-season SLB team, though, so in that regard he is indeed a "newer" member!
I told you, I play the basketball game. I just figured I'd try a 10 game baseball season to see what the game is like.

Diamond Mind does not compete with What If. Diamond Mind does not run leagues at all. They sell their sim with either cards or a computer disk, much like Strat-O-Matic. There is no website that runs leagues a or anything like that. You buy the game, and various seasons and/or other sets of teams and players and run the leagues yourself.

This isn't Diamond Mind, so what they do doesn't apply here.

Theme league, progressive league and Champions leagues offer a broader range of available parks. Open league play is considered a beginner league, hence the limited list of parks.

You're either gonna play this with an open mind, or not. Stop judging it before you figure out how it works...

Outfielders here have fielding pct and range ratings, and catchers have caught stealing ratings and passed ball ratings. Dig deeper into the draft center.

League leader stats are in here, perhaps not in the Spring Training mode. You'll need to try an Open League to get a better view of things.
I wouldn't try an open league because of the clones. It's a much bigger problem in basketball, where the open leagues are all owners who have like 2 Stocktons, 2 or 3 LeBrons and even 3 and/or 2 Steph Currys. You get playoff scores in open leagues of like 173-167 because owners stockpile the same great players on most teams. The all star game will have like 5 LeBrons, 4 Stocktons, 3 Currys and 2 Jordans on the two 12 man rosters.

There was a guy in my 10 game season who had two Altulves. It was actually a very stupid move since he can only play 2B and there was no DH. The second Altuve as just a pinch hitter.

I'm gonna look around for a theme league that I might like. To me the best part of these leagues is the draft.

I mainly play progressive leagues - we play 1 season at a time and hold a draft each offseason for rookies and cut players

Yeah, I don't go for progressive leagues in any sport. I want to try different strategies and my favorite thing is putting the team together and/or drafting. Not much of that in progressive leagues where you keep the same players from season to season.

I went to the classifieds and the things there just have too many wacky rules, like you have to draft 25 players all from different franchises, or all from the same season, or schit like that. And the salaries seem kinda crazy. 1969 McCovey is 9.5 million, but other great 1B seasons are like double that.

Okay, I just joined an Open League. I kept most of the same position players from my 10 team season, but with a brand new pitching staff for a 162 game season. I dropped down in salary at 2B and in the LH platoon for LF so I would have more money fpor pitching. Gonna use a 4 man rotation with an A and B for the 4th slot. Here's the roster.

Okay guys, how do I look? Predictions?

The pitching OAV and WHIP aren't very good. They'll get rocked.
12/7/2022 3:25 AM
I agree with Doc. Just wondering which park you're using...that could make a huge difference.

As far as fielding ratings go, the letters just give a basic idea of what you're getting. Haven't used those since I first started here and doubt that many do. There can be a big difference in an "A" rating (or any of them). You can search by fielding pct and range, plus search by fld pct" #", which is an "adjusted" pct for different eras. The # can be used for pitching and hitting searches too. Play around with all of the player parameter search tools. I suggest you invest a little time looking through all the tools available, play a few teams, then decide if WIS is for you. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions...many experienced players are always willing to offer advice. I hope you learn to like it and stick around.

Never tried Diamond Mind...looked at it a couple years ago, but just seemed too expensive with individual seasons up to $24.95 each. That's the reason I quit S-O-M years ago. DM may be a great game, but I enjoy having many different teams over different eras. If I enjoyed the game, I'm pretty sure it would wind up setting me back well over $500.

IMO the best bang for the buck is OOTP. $39.99 and you get every season from 1871-2022.
12/7/2022 5:10 AM
I'm in Yankee Stadium 1976, same as the 10 game season where I finished first. My team ERA there was 4.65, but I went 7-3, scoring 6.6 runs per game. And my pitching is better than last time with almost the same exact offense. I have 4 really good relievers. The starters are below average, but I have great fielding which will help the pitchers out a lot. Helms, Boudreau and Speaker up the middle is very strong. We'll see.

As for Diamond Mind, I NEVER use individual seasons. I only use their all time great players disc similar to what is available here with the career guys. I've had it for many years, and spent less than $100 on everything.

Here is a series by series tournament I ran. It starts about 1/3 the way down this page. It was with 124 of the best multiyear teams of all time.

Okay, I think I got everything set. It's very confusing. When you go to your team you should be able to see all pertinent ratings right on the first page, but you can't. Instead you just see stats. You have to click a few times to be able to see your team's fielding ratings.

I have hit and run on NEVER. Hit and run is a losing strategy. Your hitter's batting average goes up a bit, but his OBP and SLG% go down a lot, as he has is never gonna walk and has to swing at bad pitches at times too. If he misses the pitch the runner has a lower chance to be safe then on a regular steal. I have everybody on NEVER for stealing except Buxton who was 9 for 10. Stealing is also a bad strategy unless the player is safe AT LEAST 80% of the time. I subscribe to the Earl Weaver opinion on team speed.
