Draft Strategy Write-Up & Stats Topic

Pittsburgh Pirates

Pick 1.05: 1903
The top 4 picks were essentially my top 4 rated seasons. But 1903 was a clear 5th. Unfortunately I can't roster both Deacon Phillippe and Sam Leever, but Phillippe (335 IP, 2.21 ERC) is a great start to the staff. Offensively, Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke are locks. Then I have three options for the last two spots--OF Ginger Beaumont, 3B Tommy Leach, and 2B Claude Ritchey. Each are solid but not spectacular options, but it's nice to have the flexibility later on in the draft. Ultimately, I ended up only rostering Leach and adding Kaiser Wilhelm to give me some insurance innings.

Pick 2.28: 2014
I probably should've gone for some more innings with this pick but it does give me a lot of hard-to-fill positions. Again, I have more options than spots with 4 guys for 3 slots. Andrew McCutchen made it in the OF. Josh Harrison is a very versatile right-handed bot with ratings at 2B, 3B, OF, and SS. I chose Neil Walker in a close choice over Russell Martin for the 3rd spot. The two pitchers are both relievers, headlined by Mark Melancon. Tony Watson is a Setup B type guy.

Pick 3.44: 1999
I made this pick quickly and again, probably should've looked more at pitching options. But the hitters here fit nicely. This time, no options, the three top hitters are clearly Brian Giles, Kevin Young, and Jason Kendall. Young ended up as just a platoon bat, but at the time I needed a full-time 1B. Giles is one of my top 3 hitters. Kendall only has 337 PA but A+ arm and great hitting. Again, the pitchers are not great. Jason Christiansen is by far the best arm but just 38 IP (2.58 ERC). I had to roster Kris Benson (198 IP, 3.44 ERC). In hindsight, I might've wanted this pick back to go with more pitching.

Pick 4.53: 1968
There were 8 picks between my 3rd and 4th round selections (2 picks each for 4 different owners). I had 3 seasons that I liked--1945, 1965, and 1968--each with a good amount of pitching volume. 1945 had Preacher Roe as a starter and Boom-Boom Beck as a long reliever. I also would have gotten the perfect platoon-mate for Kendall in Bill Salkeld. 1965 had Vern Law and Bob Veale as SP options totaling nearly 500 innings. Robert Clemente and Donn Clendenon would've given me right-handed bats, with Jim Pagliaroni backing up Kendall. Both of these got taken quickly after my 3rd round pick.

Luckily, 1968 made it back to me and was probably my first choice. I needed the innings more than anything and the Bobs (Moose and Veale) were the two best pitchers left for me. 418 innings with ERCs in the mid-2s is exactly what I needed. The hitting options are just okay, with Clemente and Matty Alou forming an OF platoon. I rostered Chris Cannizzaro as my 3rd catcher--his 70 PA are just enough to keep my catching platoon afloat.

Pick 5.76: 1931
I needed a few more innings and a couple bats to fill out my lineup. 1931 was pretty clearly the best choice left for me. Bill Harris (33 IP, 1.53 ERC) will close for me, while Heinie Meine (299 IP, 3.18 ERC) will be my 3rd or 4th starter. I kinda got lucky that both Waners were here (though I didn't need Lloyd and his A+ OF range and left him off), with Paul Waner's A+ range at 1B upgrading my weakest starting spot vs RHP (over Kevin Young). Rollie Hemsley isn't great, but he'll back up Kendall (along with Cannizzaro). I opted for Tony Piet as my last spot. He can rest Neil Walker at 2B vs some lefties.

Round 1 - 1928
It was my last night in Las Vegas and I was having my best cash game session of the week when I got the text that I was due up. I honestly didn’t expect the draft to make it that far, so I was not ready to make my pick yet. When I got back to my place, I did some quick research on the laptop and posted 1928 before I went to sleep, since I was leaving early for the airport. The next morning while sitting at the gate, I instantly regretted my pick. You see, I wanted either 1905 or 1911 to go along with 1928. There were only two people drafting behind me and I thought one of those two Group A seasons would make it to me. Not sure if either njbigwig or DarthDurron would’ve taken 1928, but I really wanted Burleigh Grimes (353 innings, 2.58 erc#). He has always done well for me. Although I didn't get him in the other franchise draft, in round 1, he went 28-12, 5.05 in 54 starts (333 innings) and in round 2, he went 22-11, 4.55. Pitcher Joe Dawson (138, 3.24) is only the roster b/c I am required to select two pitchers from this team. This year has one of the better Paul Waner (.359, .437, .539, C+/B) seasons. Pie Traynor (.327, .362, .455, C/A) locks up third base. I have a few choices for my third hitter, but I ultimately chose 1B George Grantham (.323, .399, .479, C-/B) over OF Lloyd Waner (.335, .369, .427, B/A+) because I am overloaded in the OF.

Round 2 - 1987
So I was sitting at the airport waiting for njbigwig to make his round 1 pick. Sure enough, he takes 1905. Then DarthDurron takes 1911. Crap! The boarding process has started and I was trying to figure out what to do. I finally decided on 1990 right about the time njbigwig posted his second round pick… yep… he took 1990. Double crap! It seemed way too early to draft a season like 1912, 1910 or 1906 (just to get a good Honus Wagner), so I started looking at SPs from other groups. I considered 1963, 1965 and 1987. Group D doesn’t have much pitching so I went with 1987. I texted my pick to njbigwig right as the plane with lifting off. I really like Rick Reuschel (227 innings, 2.59). He went 15-10, 3.70 ERA (2nd in the league) for me in the first draft tournament. Jeff D. Robinson (27, 1.82) was 16/18 in saves w/3.80 ERA in the other league. OF Andy Van Slyke (.293, .353, .496, B+/B+) has nice extra base hit numbers (36-11-21) with a 91 speed rating. He can also start at first base (A/B-). Catcher Mike Lavalliere (.300, .378, .354, A+ arm) won’t give up many SBs. 2B Jose Lind (.322, .358, .423, A+/A+) only has 157 PA but is a useful piece. This isn’t a stud season for the 19th overall pick but it’s not bad compared to other Group D seasons.

Round 3 – 2013
Since I decided to wait until the last round to select my Group A season, I decided to draft based on scarcity again. There are only a few good Group E seasons, 2015 and 2014 were already taken so I decided on 2013 because this season provided five useful pieces. I needed a 2B and Neil Walker is good enough (.251, .346, .416, A-/A+) mainly because of his defense. Plus, he is a switch-hitter. He only has 551 PA, so he fits perfectly with Jose Lind. This is only the third best season for Andrew McCutchen (.317, .411, .505, C+/B), but all three are still pretty good. McCutchen is another guy with a great speed rating (89). The main reason I selected 2013 over 2012 is due to three good RPs… Mark Melancon (71 innings, 1.84 erc#), Tony Watson (72, 1.94) and Justin Wilson (74, 2.28) represent the best bullpen I’ve had in any of these drafts. What could possibly go wrong?

Round 4 – 1912
Round 5 – 1951

When I made my third round pick, I already knew I would be able to make both my fourth and fifth round picks at the same time, which is a huge advantage. I was hoping one of 1906, 1910 or 1912 would make it back to me… 1910 and 1912 did. Ironically, so did 1918 and 1920. So, I have a decision to make. I could draft a stud pitcher like ’20 Babe Adams or ’18 Wilbur Cooper and then get my starting SS (Dick Groat) from a 1960’s season or I could go the direction that I ultimately went, which is to add a good Honus Wagner (.324, .389, .503, B+/A) at the expense of getting a good deadball SP. Owen “Chief” Wilson (.300, .336, .520, C/A-) set the MLB triples record in 1912 with 36, so that should be fun. Max Carey (.302, .366, .400, C+/A+) gives me too many OFs, since I also have Paul Waner, Andy Van Slyke and Andrew McCutchen. I’m rostering them all, salary be damned. The downside of selecting 1912 instead over 1920 is that I am going to have to get 50 starts from Claude Hendrix (310 innings, 3.09 erc#) which is a huge downgrade from a guy like ’20 Babe Adams, who didn’t even get drafted. But at least Hank Robinson (188, 2.25) is a very good pitcher, although his performance review numbers aren’t that great.

1951 was a pretty easy decision once I decided on 1912. I needed another catcher and could use a really strong hitter to bat in the middle of my lineup. Despite most teams having at least one good deadball pitcher, I really wanted to roster 1B Ralph Kiner (.309, .451, .624, D/A-). I know he only hit 22 HRs in the first draft tournament, but he’s just too good to pass up, even though I didn’t need another first baseman (maybe I can start Grantham against deadball pitchers) and Kiner vs everybody else. Clyde McCullough (.297, .365, .436, B/C/A+) will platoon at catcher with Mike LaValliere. Both have A+ arms, which is nice. Part-timer Jack Merson (55 PA, .360, .371, .536, C/B+) can pinch hit and play some 2B. The pitching isn’t deep, but Ted Wilks (87, 2.68) is fine. Vern Law (120, 3.96) will only pitch in mop-up duty.

Overall Comment:
I do wonder how this team would have turned out had I drafted 1905 or 1911 with my first pick. Does 1928 make it back to me in round 2? And if so, what do I end up getting in Group D? I was disappointed with my team’s outlook in round 2, but I think it turned out ok. I have a lot of wasted salary with two extra full-time players, but it gives me some flexibility. I can go with Kiner or Grantham at 1B. Paul Waner is an everyday lock, but I have to choose three of McCutchen (R), Van Slyke (L), Carey (S) and Wilson (L) to start at the other two OF spots plus DH. I also could start both Grantham and Kiner and bench two OFs. I have a good balance of lefty, righty and switch-hitters. My defense is very strong. My pitching has two strong SPs with Grimes and Reuschel and five strong bullpen pieces (H.Robinson, J.Robinson, Melancon, Watson, Wilson). I just need ’12 Claude Hendrix to pitch like his performance review numbers (4.05 ERA) and this team could win 90+ games.

Minnesota Twins

Pick 1.15: 1970
As these drafts have gone along, I've found it more valuable to get flexibility early on in the drafts. It just makes finding value later in the draft and making the final pieces fit together that much easier. I don't quite have a double-pick here but pretty close. I also will almost for sure have a double pick to finish up (as long as I don't have the exact same two open groups as 3dayrotation, I'll be able to make my last two picks together).

For this pick, I had 3 group A teams (1910, 1914, and 1916) in the mix to get a top Walter Johnson season, with 1970, 1988, 1996, and 2010 on the radar as well. The A teams just have so little hitting that taking one this early would make the team building later that much more difficult. Plus, group A has pretty good depth. That left me with the latter 4 seasons. Both 2010 and 1996 came without a top SP option, so I ruled them out. I decided to go with 1970 even though there's not really a blue-chipper in the mix. The depth and versatility is just really high. On the hitting side, there are 4 main options--Tony Oliva is a very good OF and Cesar Tovar brings A+ range at three premium spots (2B, 3B, CF) with a decent enough bat. The last spot likely comes down to either a partial Rod Carew (204 PA) or Harmon Killebrew who can DH or maybe play some 3B (C+/D-). The pitching provides 3 interesting options for the 2 spots. Tom Hall is a lock with 156 IP And 2.02 ERC#. The other spot could either go to Jim Perry (279 IP, 2.86 ERC) or long reliever Stan Williams if I want to upgrade the quality for fewer innings (114 IP, 2.29 ERC).

Pick 2.18: 1988
I though I would grab one of the A seasons after 3day took one, but he instead took 1925 so I rethought my strategy. Could I get a quality Group A season with my 3rd round pick? 1988 is the strongest of a weak crop in group D, so I decide to roll the dice that the depth of the other groups will benefit me later. 1988 is headlined by Kirby Puckett. Gary Gaetti and Kent Hrbek bring some pop from opposite sides of the plate despite mediocre defense at 3B/1B respectively. The pitching isn't great but it's useful enough with Frank Viola (256 IP, 2.88 ERC) giving me a big-inning starter and either Roy Smith (37 IP, 2.56 ERC), Jeff Reardon (73 IP, 2.91 ERC) or Juan Berenguer (100 IP, 3.17 ERC) joining the pen.

Pick 3.34: 1931
I struggled more with this pick than maybe any other in these drafts. I went back and forth between 1917 (best Walter Johnson), 1931 (SS and SP), 2008 (C, part-time SS, relievers), and 2010 (C, elite Morneau, worse pitching). I really need a SS and a C, but also some other depth up and down the lineup. And of course I need innings. I think I typed in each of the four seasons at least once into the post box. For 1917, the argument is obvious--you get the best Walter Johnson left and can focus mostly on hitting with the last two picks. But you get essentially 4 dead roster spots. I mean MAYBE Joe Judge could DH some for me but he's basically a worse version of Kent Hrbek. However, if I don't take this Walter Johnson, my pitching will be much worse. At best, I'll get a weaker Walter (1917 is at 2.12 ERC, the next-best left are at 2.60 or higher).

For 2008 and 2010, the main prize is locking a Mauer season as my catcher. 2008 is the better of the two, but 2010 comes with the awesome Morneau partial. However, the third hitter from there is Thome and now I'm really overloaded with lefty 1B/DH types. 2008 has the better Mauer, as I mentioned, but also a decent Nick Punto (A+ range) at SS but he only has 374 PA so I would still need a platoon partner for him. There are also other Mauers floating out there (2012, 2013). Neither season gives me a real SP but I do get decent relievers.

I finally settled on 1931. Mainly, I get my starting full-time SS In Joe Cronin, but I also get a really good Sam West in the OF (A/A+ with a solid bat). My third hitter can either be Dave Harris to DH against lefties or Buddy Myer at 2B (with Tovar platooning and/or moving to 3B/OF). Nearly as importantly, I get two starting pitchers with over 400 combined innings. Bump Hadley is the better of the two (189 IP, 2.77 ERC) but Firpo Marberry (231 IP, 3.07) isn't terrible.

Pick 4.63: 1902
Pick 5.66: 2003
Brutal stretch right before my picks. 1917 and 2008 went in round 3 as expected, but with 3 group E picks before me I had 3 Mauer seasons left (2010, 2012, and 2013). Of course, all went. Ugh, now I'm scrambling. I have NO catching options from my first 3 picks. I also have a Group A dilemma--do I take the best pitcher left (either 1909 Walter or 1905 Tom Hughes) with no hitting, or take 1902 with Big Ed Delahanty and a few other solid hitters but no pitching at all? I could also split the difference with 1920 (154 IP Walter Johnson and Sam Rice).

First things first, who are the best catchers available to me? That's 2019 Mitch Garver (by far best hitter, but only 359 PA and D- arm), 1923 Muddy Ruel (A+ arm and best OBP, but not good enough teammates), and 2003 AJ Pierzynski (weaker hitter than Garver, weaker arm than Ruel, but 533 PA and left-handed). When I looked at 2003, I had an idea. With 03, I don't get much other hitting help, but they do have a solid Johan Santana (159 IP, 2.54 ERC) and two decent relievers in Guardado and Hawkins. Could I get enough innings out of my team if I paired them with 1902 to get Delahanty and those bats?

I decided yes, though my pitching overall won't be great. 1902 Al Orth will give me 386 innings but they're terrible. The only other two 200+ IP pitchers on my roster are 88 Viola and 31 Marberry. 31 Hadley with 189 will be the third starter. I was able to drop 70 Perry in favor of 70 Stan Williams and I'll roster 4 pitchers between 100 and 160 innings. I only have two real pitchers with IP/G > 5 so it will be a bit of a juggling act with the staff. The benefit is I get 02 Delahanty to be my full-time 1B (Hrbek moves to DH). OF Jimmy Ryan platoons with Sam West. Bill Coughlin backs up all three infield spots. And Boileyard Clarke gives Pierzynski (533 PA) a right-handed backup. I thought about rostering 2003 Corey Koskie at 3B (as well as 1931 Myer at 2B) to give me a lefty infield bat but with Tovar, Gaetti, and Cronin on the mix, they would be duplicative and with Coughlin now in the mix I don't need a backup. Instead, I get to roster 2003 Michael Ryan's magnificent 68 PA (1.175 OPS#). In a similar vein, I don't need Killebrew so I instead get 204 PA Rod Carew as another high-quality lefty bat.

I thought about putting this team in Target Field due to my pitching woes but there's a bit too much pop here to really neuter it so I went with Griffith Stadium (-2 HR) instead.

Round 1 - 1945
I wasn’t sure if I was going to try and draft a Walter Johnson season in round 2 or not, so I wanted to leave my options open to draft a season like 1921 later. As a result, I needed to make sure I got two good (non deadball) SPs in round 1. I didn’t start researching until my turn came up and I never really considered any other seasons once I found 1945. I love Roger Wolff (263 innings, 2.04 erc#) and he has done very well for me in other leagues. He went 21-14, 4.39 in the first draft tournament. Dutch Leonard (228, 2.65) was also decent in the other tournament (13-12, 4.34). The hitters aren’t as good as those in the 1930’s but are decent enough. 1B Joe Kuhel (.285, .378, .400, C/A-) may play out of position at 2B b/c I have too many decent 1B. George Myatt (.296, .378, .365) will play both 2B and 3B despite being a mediocre fielder at both positions. Buddy Lewis (.333, .423, .465, B/B) only has 322 PA but is one of my best hitters. After making this pick, I quickly realized that my offense is pretty much going to suck. I see why 1930 was the #1 overall pick.

Round 2 - 1910
I really wanted 1969 but ronthegenius grabbed them from me two picks before my turn. I considered 1968, 1973 and 1992. There were two strong Walter Johnson seasons left (1910 & 1916) and I wanted to get one of them. In the first draft tournament, the 1910 version of Walter performed phenomenally. He went 28-14, 2.59 and led the league in ERA by 65 points over second place. The 1916 version was also very good as he went 28-10, 3.32. After Jtpsops posted 1910, I grabbed 1916. Right after I posted, he said he accidentally typed in 1910 instead of 1916. Since we picked back-to-back and I was leaning toward taking 1910 over 1916 anyway, we simply flipped seasons. No harm, no foul. Neither season has much hitting. My ’10 Walter Johnson (397, 1.93) is better than ’16, but 1916 gets George Dumont who can be a nice RP option, so it’s probably a wash. The hitting on this team is so bad that I took a crappy second pitcher, Frank Oberlin (62, 3.75) who won’t ever play. OF Clyde Milan (.289, .391, .367, D/B+) is the only (barely) starter-worthy batter (a lefty bat with a decent OBP). Germany Schaefer (.285, .363, .379) has 2B, 3B & OF as eligible positions, but he can’t play defense at any of them. Bill Cunningham (.308, .414, .428) has 98 PA and will only pinch-hit b/c his defense at 2B is terrible.

Round 3 – 1965
1992 went two picks after I drafted1910. I would’ve taken 1973 or 1968 had they made it back to me, but both went (picks 2.16 and 3.03). I agonized over this choice. I almost posted 1972 because that would have “filled” 2B, 3B and SS plus two good 95+ inning RPs. I use the word “filled” loosely because my offense would’ve been awful. Yes, 1972 would’ve filled three key infield positions, but none of them are great hitters. I considered 1964 because that season had 3 strong hitters, but they all played OF/DH. I knew I would likely be playing my home games at Target Field and it didn't make sense to add three HR hitters. I also strongly considered 1975 to get a stud Carew season plus a solid Blyleven season, but not much else. Given how my last two selections ended up, I would’ve been better off taking 1975 over 1965. You see, I wanted to make sure I filled two of C, 2B/3B, SS with this pick. And 1965 did that with C Earl Battey (.297, .384, .415, A+ arm) and SS Zoilo Versalles. But I ended up cutting Zoilo. He was awful in the first draft tournament.. he was one of the worst hitting full-time shortstops in the league while also leading the league in errors. I am glad to add Tony Oliva (.321, .388, .498, D+/B+). I replaced Versalles with Jimmie Hall (.285, .356, .471, C+/A-) who will be my starting CF. The two pitchers I added are barely usable, with Al Worthington (81, 2.92) and Camilo Pascual (156, 3.12). In retrospect, this was a bad pick.

Round 4 – 2010
This season was not the best choice to fill the needed positions on my roster. But I wanted to make sure I have some semblance of an offense. 1B Justin Morneau (348 pa, .345, .438, .606, A+/B+) is my team’s best hitter. Joe Mauer (.327, .403, .456) gives me over 1000 PAs at catcher, so he will end up playing a lot of DH. Danny Valencia (.312, .352, .435, A/B) will start about 75-80 games (322 PA) at 3B. I only added two RPs, Brian Fuentes (48 innings, 2.36) and Matt Guerrier (71, 2.70). The best thing about this pick was that I knew ronthegenius and footballmm11 wanted this season.

Round 5 – 1978
I went back and forth between 1995 and 1978. 1995 gives me a good 2B with Chuck Knoblauch plus a decent (not great) Kirby Puckett season. But both players have D+ range and I still needed a good-range outfielder to play CF. That’s when I figured out that if I select 1978, I can add SS Roy Smalley Jr. (.273, .364, .432, B/A-) which means cutting ’65 Zoilo Versalles while rostering '65 Jimmie Hall to play CF. Rod Carew (.333, .413, .440, C/B) gives me a third 1B. I’ll have to figure out how to use Carew, Kuhel and Morneau. I may play one of these guys out of position at 2B. Jose Morales (.314, .365, .400) is a part-time player who can pinch hit and play DH. I needed another SP, so welcome to the team Dave Goltz (221, 3.18). Mike Marshall (99, 2.58) is probably my best long reliever.

Overall Comment:
Had I taken 1972 in round 3, I would have had one of the best pitching staffs in the league (along with great defense), but also probably finished last in runs scored. My defense isn't as good as I'd like it to be, but with Morneau, Mauer, Carew, Oliva and B.Lewis, at least I have a chance at being close to league average in offense. Blah... who am I kidding? This offense is still going to suck... hopefully, they can take advantage of those teams who went with offense first and got stuck with crappy pitching. I can start lefty bats or switch hitters at all 9 positions, which is kind of cool, especially against all those Walter Johnsons. I love my top two SPs, with '10 Walter Johnson and '45 Roger Wolff. I could see them both finishing in the top of the league in ERA. I'm not as high on my RP options. This could be another situation where my bullpen blows leads for my good SPs. I have a very low salary, andwill be playing the the AL West, so there's that. I am playing in Target Field to punish all the HR teams (since I don't have many HRs). Probably 81-83 wins.

"But I ended up cutting Zoilo. He was awful in the first draft tournament.. he was one of the worst hitting full-time shortstops in the league while also leading the league in errors."

Was that for me? Sounds like my experience with him

Yes. It looks like he was on your team.

His final stats for you... .247, .296, .341
His .637 ops ranked 12th our of 14 eligible shortstops. ('78 Smalley ranked 7th)
He had 47 errors (worst) for a .954 fielding%, ranked 14th ('78 Smalley ranked 11th)

Also, '65 Versalles played his home games in the Humphrey Dome. '78 Smalley played at Target Field.

Had I reviewed this earlier, I probably pass on 1965
