Down Goes Frazier! We are guaranteed a new Champion as the Cup XVIII title holder Rushmore FC was eliminated this evening after dropping their third Group A game, losing tonight to BC Timber Wolves, who took the game 4-2, jumped to the top of the standings and punched their own ticket. Things started off so promisingly for the Champs as they went up 2-0 and Timber Wolves defender Geronimo Cobos was kicked from the game in the 11th after trying to break the legs of Ty Evan. Yet, it wasn't enough of an advantage as the Canadians closed within one by halftime and then mustered a pair of goals in the final two minutes to shock the almost 45,000 in the Rushmore Stadium into disbelief. After the referee blew the final whistle, the Timber Wolves players came over to shake the hands of the Champs before starting their celebration. The win also sends Swampdragons FC through to safety, who were high-fiving while sitting around a television watching the contest.
Merchiston FC also advances after destroying Kobelco United Football Club in a massive 8-1 home win in Group H, wrecking Kobelco's differential. It was never really a game as Merchiston just poured it on, led by Golden Toe leader Thomas-VanLuijk De Meyer, who scored twice to be the first player in Cup XIX to reach 9 goals. While the Japanese team have plenty of games in which to recover, they have a lot of work to do and can't afford another result like that.
Not Very United got an expected 2-0 Group G win over hapless Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond, who will probably end up as the only team who does not score a group stage point. The Dutch Nationals are bad enough but they can't afford to go a man down, which was the situation after John Wauters was red-carded. Not Very ends group play with 10 points, which will probably not be enough as the crutchanators of soccer finish against the Orange and, if they win, will hold the tiebreaker.
Club Deportivo Baile Brian beat Slough FC in their return game and beat them by the same score Baile Brian had lost to Slough in the first matchup, a mirrored 3-1 result out of Group E. Raymond Petke scored twice for the Irish club as they jump from last to right back in the mix in a very tight race for 2nd place. Slough, who got a lone score from Dorian Pyrtle in the 57th, must win its last game and then hope a very specific combinations of scores happen. The real winners were idle FC Gimli Vikings, who clinched at least 2nd place despite playing only three games so far.
To finish off the day, Brighton AFC got a consolation win in their Group B finale, winning 4-1 over FC Cackalacky. Another red card marred this game and another team scored four short-handed goals despite the handicap. Veteran Kyle Frame scored twice to lead Brighton, while Cackalacky got a tally from Quique Niño, who used the extra space the man advantage provided to fire a bullet that froze goalie Kolton Rimando into spectator status.
Considering the heavy schedules we have had the last several days, the 7 games on tap tomorrow will be comparatively light. Six playoff spots remain.
